Pete M
boa was my first guess, but that's what I'm familiar with (being a city boy and all). upon further examination, it has no traits that scream venomous. no pit and that round pupil is a dead giveaway. I'm going with Don's guess. sure looks the part and they are apparently incredible climbers.

64 Cheyenne
I'd seal the garage better, do away with the snake. Bats are way more beneficial than that snake. And as is my understanding, bats in North America are in a serious decline because of white nose fungus. https://www.whitenosesyndrome.org/news/european-origins-fungus-killing-millions-north-america%E2%80%99s-bats-new-study-finds-genetic-link
64 Cheyenne
And snakes are bad, look at the Everglade problem with invasive Boas, and the lack of birds on Guam. https://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/Birds/Facts/fact-guambirds.cfm
Pete M
rat snakes are a native species and a good thing. they are very effective at limiting rodent populations. In the end I want both around and so we'll be adding bat boxes somewhere before we seal up the vent (don't really want either one inside the attic), I'm just not sure where I can mount one that is snake-proof. :hmm: I mean, the snake scaled the outside wall of the garage to get up to the vent. that's some talent right there. :ack:
87MJTIM
We have 1/2 bath on our first floor. Its located at the front of the house with the exhaust vent running to the rear of the house. We had issues with birds making nests in the vent for a while. Then one day we noticed a bad stench coming from the vent. We figured a bird must have died in the vent. I purchased a dryer vent brush to clean out the vent. So, I opened the vent in the bath, ran a fishing tape from the outside into the bath (think about this in a minute), hooked it to the brush. I then went out side and started to pull the brush outside. I am standing on the blue ladder when I am greeted with this. BTW - the ladder is on a deck approx. 8' off the ground. Naturally, I called to my wife saying: "Honey, come look at this." She hates snakes. It was a 3' rat snake! It some how climbed up the deck, amazingly, climbed up and in to vent! Took care of our bird problem, but, boy, does snake poop stink! Remember, I opened the exhaust fan in the bath, then pushed a fish tape in to the house. I could have easily pushed the snake in to the house as well. My wife would have loved me for that...NOT!

vanschmidt
Nice eco system. Bats are great for mosquito control. Snakes are great rodent control. Non toxic and safe. I need some bats for my house. :D
