88whitemanche
What's up fellas So I'm currently selling my truck and I've been getting emails and calls from different area codes. How does one know who to trust with not getting scammed? I mean I don't write back to emails because I don't trust it and I don't answer phone calls If I don't have the contact info on my phone... I feel if you really wanted the truck you could leave a name and number to call back no? Or text me? I can't say much as far as emails as there was a time I didn't have a phone and I was emailing everyone I could to get a jeep(1st jeep)... But I kept emailing until they knew it wasn't a spam/scam email.... What do you guys think? Or feel? Or what action would you take?
Zebvance
If anybody that is not local and wants to buy the jeep via money order or cashiers check and have you ship the truck or they say they have a shipping company going to pick it up is a scammer. Every scammer that I have came across only works through email also. you can also Google the email address or phone number and usually you will find out if it is a known scammer or not. cruiser54
I post this in every craigslist ad: PLEASE DON’T email me simply asking if I still have this stuff as I will suspect you're a scammer and won't respond. I remove my listings first chance I get after selling the items. Technical questions and specific concerns will be addressed promptly via email or phone as needed. Just send me your email or phone number please. Thanks for looking.
87Warrior
Am I understanding correctly? You don't trust email or a phone call, but do trust text? A scammer is easy to spot. They won't agree to meet you in the Home Depot parking lot and agree to pay cash for the truck. There is no reason anything but cash should be the currency exchanged for a MJ. I'll take a phone call but I don't normally answer out of area calls or not on my contacts... If the person who is calling and I don't answer can leave a message and I'll return the call.... xjrev10
Craigslist is a pain sometimes. You could also not leave your phone number and make them email you a number for you to call them. Friend of mine does lots of dealing on CL and he's done it that way for a long time. Rarely have any issue. Good luck.

Incommando
Why is " do you still have it" a sign of a scammer especially if the ad is a couple of weeks old?
88whitemanche
Why is " do you still have it" a sign of a scammer especially if the ad is a couple of weeks old? Is it? There's times I've answered to ads that are a couple weeks old and still get to buy the specific item... I bought a warn m8000 winch only a couple months old for $140 that way.... cruiser54
Why is " do you still have it" a sign of a scammer especially if the ad is a couple of weeks old? It's not ALWAYS, but it is a scam to mine your email address and/or phone. Hence, the disclaimer I use as a SELLER. Did you read it? It separates the flakes and scammers from true buyers. I don't lose sales and I don't respond to scammers. Simple. Only through craigslist mail system initially. Folks are very understanding. If you offend a scammer or an idiot who can't read, who cares? I rarely have less than 30 Jeep items on craigslist at any one time and I sell lots.
HOrnbrod
You guys are too paranoid. Email is fine with me and for phone calls I never answer if I don't recognize the caller ID. The caller must leave a voicemail first, then I'll call back. Screw texting......

How are you asking people to contact you in the ad? If you listed an e-mail address, and people e-mail you and you don't respond ... I'd say they figure either the truck has been sold, or YOU'RE a scammer. I know if I respond to an ad and the seller doesn't get back to me, I'm sure as hell not going to waste my time sending more messages or making more phone calls. Same for phone calls. So you listed a telephone number, trying to sell a truck most likely to someone you don't know (because if someone you already know wanted to buy it, it would be sold), but you won't answer phone calls? And I won't do a TXT MSG for something like a vehicle purchase. Too much money involved for a TXT MSG. Communication implies a two-way exchange. How can you possibly even begin to determine if someone is a scammer if you won't even respond to their contacts? I'd say you don't really want to sell you're truck, because you're doing everyrthing possible to ensure that nobody who might be interested will ever see it. 87Warrior
Eagle, I couldn't agree more. I am one who prefers email contact for something like Craigslist, which I assume is the venue here. Email comes directly to my phone so it is just as instant as text messaging, is relatively formal and both the buyer and seller have the opportunity to respond when is convenient for each of them to do so. Sure I'll do a phone call or text if the seller prefers, but given an option those are my last report. In my opinion, a scammer is the person who doesn't have the cash for the purchase. When I was Toyota shopping, I nearly gave up attempting to contact a seller who refused to respond to my inquiries about the vehicle. Eventually we managed to agree to meet and ended up buying the vehicle (and driving him home because he didn't think I'd buy). I try to give everyone a fair chance, and if I hadn't, I would have missed out on the Toyota.
Mattman6
I believe that when you list how to be contacted you should answer those communications. Why list a phone number if you aren't going to answer your phone? I think the easiest way to weed at the scammers is to talk to them on the phone. Almost none of the scammers will actually call you, because they are usually not even from this country. A sure fire way to spot a scammer is when they want to send you a money order or check through the mail. Because they usually will ask you to "ship" the truck before the check clears or ask to send you a check for double your asking price and then ask you to give them cash back. Answer your phone, tell them to come take a look at the truck at a neutral ground, and tell them cash only. That's a pretty easy way to put the scammers at rest. You do realize you listed a rarer truck and a lot people are willing to go long distances for them? So of course you are going to get out of area codes and I believe in this age of cell phones, out of area codes aren't that uncommon for people that may just live next door to you. sinkrun
Also talk to your bank if doing a out of area sale / ship. And the most important thing is that the money is CLEARED and ok by your bank before it ships anywhere.
DirtyComanche
I always put very clearly how I intend to be contacted. IE, I will write on the bottom of the ad "Please contact me by text message or email, but if you wish to call I am not always able to answer, so leave your name and number and that it's about this ad and I will get back to you." The scammers are easy to spot. They want to Western Union the money to me. Nope, not happening. Or they want to Paypal it. Again, nope. Anyone that actually wants to buy something will have cash. They might not want to talk on the phone, but I'm not shipping it, so they will be coming to see me. Big purchases are easy, we meet at THEIR bank. They write me the cheque, and I have it verified right there and cashed or held. I will also accept email transfers in Canada, since they can not be called back once the funds are transferred, normally I only use this for selling firearms (which I will ship). 90% of scammers also follow the same form letter, either sent by email or text. I ignore them.
scottsdale1977
Anytime I list something on Craigslist, I always state at the end "phone calls only, no texts/emails" Anyone that says they're out of the country, can't talk right now, wants to pay and pick up later, etc. is a scam. When I was 17, I almost Western Union'd $5000.00 for a 69 Camaro on eBay in mint condition, the owner claimed to be a construction worker on assignment in the UK. Just stick with common sense and have people meet you in person. & don't drive to them... some guy interested in my C-10 wanted me to drive 2 hr for him to look at it.Why?..so you can decide you don't want it & waste my gas/time? :) *shakes head*
