Anyone here running 3.55 ratio with a manual transmission. Looking to swap my dana 35 to a chrysler 8.25. And get rid of the vacuum disconnect in front. I have a cherokee for parts. Just seeing speed differences. Take off and whatever other information I can get.

based on personal experience, 3.55 is better in every way.  acceleration, mpg, everything.  a change of the speedometer gear is all you need if you want the speedo super accurate.

I don't mean to jack, but I'm going from a 96 8.25 with 4.10's and just picked up another 8.25 that was 'shaved' for a wrangler I think, but has 3.55's .

And came with an extra track-lok carrier and 3.73's.

I don't know if I should go with the 3.55's or 3.73's with my little 4cyl.  My Comanche Pioneer has the 2.5 and 'miser' edition with 3.31's.

I think I'll try the 3.55's and see what mileage I get. (the Comanche get's upwards of 25+)

90Mj, I think you would like the 3.55's with a 6cyl.

So right now you are running a 4 cylinder with 3.31 rear end and I "assume" stock 225/75 x 15 tires?

Might be quicker and easier for you to try a set of lower profile tires.  Like 215/70 or 225/60 x 15 rather than change the rear axel ratio.

Id go with 3:73s my comanche is 2wd but i got a dana 30 lp out of a tj with 3:73s its not in my jeep yet but i can't find any rear 8.25 or 8.8 where i live with 3:73s so i might trade my 30 for one with 3:55s not sure yet

I have 3.55's with an AX-15 and 235/75-15 tires.  It's a great setup for light towing and daily driving, but I honestly would rather have 31" tires otherwise.  3.55's with 31" tires is roughly the same overall gearing as stock 3.07's with a manual trans.  Turning 1800rpm at 60mph.   With the 3.55's and 29" tires it sits right at 2000rpm at 60.

3.73 is the more common ratio in KJ 8.25's, and as a bonus come with disc brakes. Just an FYI. My tentative plans just now are to put in a KJ 8.25 with 4.10's (less common) to match with an hp d30, eventually for 32's or 33's. But when I say tentative I mean this likely won't happen for another couple years if at all.

what do you mean by "going from a 96 8.25 with 4.10s"?

do you have the 4spd or 5spd manual trans?

I have a 87 pioneer 2.5l 4speed trans. I was told they come stock with 4.10s. Planning on running 35s. Not sure what gear ratio will work best. Not trying to jack this thread

2.5s with a 4 speed came with 3.55s

2.5s with the 5 speed came with 4.10s

If your planning 35s are you planning to swap axles?

The maximum gear ratio for the Dana 30 is 4.88s

This is the gear ratio I was planning for my truck just haven't sent it in for gear install

87 is an oddball,most 4 spds got 3.55 but i have seen 87s with the 4spd and 3.73s.

I ran 4.88s with 33s and it worked ok,not sure if i would have liked it with 35s.

Revolution gear is making 5.13s for the HP D30.

It all depends on how you treat your truck...I know a guy with an xj 4.0 still running the Dana 30 and 29 spline 8.25 on 38s with 4.10s he's been running and dd that setup for years and no problems...

He babies it for dd duties and beats it off-road...but he does a lot of preventive maitinence for it not to break...

I did see that but they came out after I made the purchase and weren't making an option for the amc 20...
