jeep mj with 33s and stock gearing yes or no?

I would not, regardless of engine and transmission. I have a 4.0 with an AX-15, stock would have 3.07 gearing, I have 3.55. With a cold air intake, high flow header and exhaust, bored TB, HO engine with upgraded intake, volvo injectors, and some other performance upgrades, I have trouble pulling a 1000LBS trailer up a hill, and the truck is rated for 5000LBS stock. I plan on getting 4.10 sometime, but 4.56 would probably benefit me more. That's with 33s.

the answer is part science and part opinion.  some guys have said their trucks with 33s on 3.07s are tolerable (at best).  I hated 30s on 3.07s.  I now have 33s on 4.10s are deem it acceptable (but wish for 4.88s). 

 

3.55 geared axles are everywhere and can be worthwhile if they are cheap enough. 4.10s are a bit harder to find but still out there.

3.07's suck with 30's.

My XJ has 31's and 4.10's and I love them.

33's I would want 4.10's at a minimum and would prefer 4.56's or 4.88's.

I do some highway driving with the 4.10's and 31's and it's fine up to 80-85.

Averaged 15.5 mpg at those speeds pulling a 1000 lb pop up camper and approx 300 lbs of gear plus wife and dogs.

I'm buying my first comanche in a few days its the 4.0 with 5 speed and 4wd swapped with axle from xj cherokee do i need to regear it if i want to run 33s and if so how large can i go without regearing

It depends on how well you drive a standard, and how much you enjoy (1) downshifting, and (2) replacing clutches.

 

I'm running 31x10.50s on an '88 XJ 4.0L 5-speed. It's pretty terrible. I've been driving standards for well over 50 years so I can make it go -- but I try never to start up going uphill, there is no acceleration, and 5th gear is basically useless. 31s with 3.73 gears is equal to factory tires and 3.54 gears, so IMHO you should run 4.10s with 31s. 33s might be tolerable with 4.10s, but are better with 4.56 or 4.88 gears.

I ran 33s on stock 3.55 gears with a 4.0 and automatic transmission. 60-65 mph overdrive was useless, but running 80-85 mph on a 400 mile trip to Badlands Off-road Park I got 17 mpg. I then moved up to 35s and overdrive was useless at any speed, and the best mileage I managed was 12 mpg.

 

I currently run 37s on one tons and building a striker.

Awwww Hell No!

First I put 31s on with stock 3.07s, things were tolerable to a point, 5th gear was only usable downhill or with a decent tail wind, performance sucked, reverse was ugly, too tall, either the truck wanted to move too fast or I had to slip the clutch too much to go slow or use low range. unacceptable either way.

Regeared to 4.10s, still on 31s truck performs the way it should. IMHO 31s are the way to go for a truck that sees mainly street and occasional off road use.

Just for shi%^ and giggles I put 33s on the Chief (from parts pile for the 87), fenders scrubbed, performance REALLY SUCKED, all the same issues as 31s on 3.07s, but worse.

Biggest best performing tire on a stock MJ with stock gears...stock tire size or 265 75 15.

Bigger tire always equals more $$ more lift more clearance problems more breakdowns (because of what the bigger tire gets you into) more $$.
FWIW I have an 8.8 LSD and a D30 (Lockright) set up with 4.56s 33 12.50 15s to go under the 87, someday...

OP, if you really want to run 33's, regear or find axles with a better ratio. With a manual 4.10s would put you close to stock. 3.73's would be alright. But 4.56's would be best. 

 

 

 

Heck I ran 3.73 and 35s on tj with a 4 cylinder for over a year.......anything is doable haha

I wasn't aware 4 cyls had anything lower then 4.10?

 

TJ's and wranglers are a different animal. The most common ratio for those is 3.73's
