Front bumper blues

Recommended Posts

Can't find any front bumpers at the scrap yards so i Went to summitracing.com website and talked to their tech about a new bumper for my 87 Comanche Laredo. He said that the front bumpers they have, even the Cherokee replacements up to 96 will not fit (according to the manufacturer).

Where do I go now?

ROCKAUTO.COM ( Thinking the one I bought was like $40 )

You will most likely use very bad words on the mounting bolts.

Torx bit....We Love Them! ( Not Really )

IF yours is bent/tweaked a bit I would recommend buying the two mounting brackets as well.  They should not break the bank either.

I appreciate the offer Crash! Yea not too many that I'm aware of in the local area here. The scrap yard bumpers are all shot and bent to hell and closest peeps that could possibly help are south of me 2 hours or more. This forum has really saved my arse on more than a few occasions. Running searches now on rough country and rock auto. thanks guys!

When you find one be ready to do a whole lot of swearing as said before. Those $@#%ing speed nuts that hold the bumper on love to break. IIRC they can be found from the dealer still though. You'll need a T50 socket. You can also detach the mounting brackets from the frame if you can't get the bumper off.

The front bumper is one thing that you can get off eBay for cheap and have it fit reasonably well. The front clip on my truck was trashed when I got it, and the eBay bumper I have now fits fine (the plastic grille pieces certainly don't though)

Nate at nates4x4.com makes Comanche specific bumpers and Rock sliders. I have his winch front bumper and rock sliders and it's awesome. He uses more bolts to attach it to the frame then rough country so it's pretty sturdy

If buying a replacement stock-style bumper, before installing it throw several coats of paint or a coat of bedliner on the back. Consider clear-coating the exposed face, or be prepared to wax it frequently. The ones you get today are vastly inferior to the originals.

Several years ago I replaced the factory rear bumper on my '88 XJ. It had lasted 20+ years in an environment of heavy winter salt use, but it was shot. Got a new (NEW, not used) bumper from the Jeep dealer. It lasted three winters, and within that time it rusted out worse than the one it replaced. I have an '89 parts XJ with 219,000 miles on the clock that has a much better rear bumper, and an almost perfect front bumper (the front will go on an '88 MJ 4-banger). Be sure to seal up any new OEM-style bumper to keep moisture from getting into and behind the (alleged) chrome plating.

Bed liner is not the same as rustproofing. Just spray some motor oil or Fluid Film on the back instead.

Rustproofing is good, but what most places sell as "rustproofing" is nothing but undercoating, and that's bad. It doesn't bond well to the steel, it allows water to get between the metal and the coating layer, and thus promotes rust rather than protect against it.
