redwolf624
so i want to swap out my fog lights for some LEDs for 2 reasons, 1. they're brighter 2. my fog lights are gettin dimmer and dimmer and all my wiring is still good among lookin at LED lights i came across flood and spot LED lights, i was wondering what's the difference, what will be good mounted where, i know i wanna replace my fog lights (driving lights) with the same length (5inches) and i'm thinkin about 2 LED pods (or the same lights that replace my driving lights) and a LED light bar that fits between the two lights on the roll bar. But i'm tryin to do a little research before i go crazy lookin at every different light, again the questions are 1. what's the difference between spot and flood LED lights 2. which style LED will be best mounted where 3. anyone got ideas for a rocker switch panel :rotf: Redwolf
Strokermjcomanche
Spots give a light pattern that are more straight forward and focused. Floods give a wide more close undefined pattern . The switch panel from any xj / mj will operate 2 different sets of lights .

Blue XJ
I have a set of the Rough Country 4" round LED lights, I would recommend them. $100 and they put out a ton of light.
Keyav8r
If you're not using your clock you can fab a panel to fit there that should take 4 to 6 toggle switches. Alternate location could be a panel fabricated to replace the ash tray. Would be a longer reach, but workable.

gogmorgo
The clock panel in question is this one: Lights only go dim if they aren't getting enough power (there's something wrong with the wiring) or else there's something obstructing them. How clean are your lenses?

krustyballer16
this is my LED set up on my XJ 50" combo pattern on the roof, 20" spot pattern on the bumper and 2 sets of pods. (ones on the bumper are lows, ones in the stock spot are highs) these are FCKLightbars. they are ungodly bright and there somewhat pricey but not the most expensive. theyre quality. after looking at probably 60 companies, this is the one i chose. How clean are your lenses? lights can also dim because the reflective material in the back of the lens deteriorates and it looses it reflection. Especially on cheap lights. I don't use them on the main roads and I never used my high beams on them either. They light up the road like I flipped on a light switch in a dark room so I imagine it would suck for an oncoming car if I had them on.

Eagle
Technically, "spot" lights would be "driving" lights, which are NOT the same thing as "fog" lights. Driving lights have a long, thin pencil beam that shines far down the road in front of the vehicle. Under federal (and many states') law, "driving" lights can only be used with high beams and they are supposed to shut off when you dip the headlights to low beam. However, "fog" lights are not the same as "flood" lights. Flood lights put the light out into a much wider pattern than spot lights, but it's still basically a round pattern that shines in a cone. That's not good for use in fog, and it's not good for on-coming traffic. "Fog" lights have a specialty pattern -- it's very wide horizontally, and very narrow vertically with a sharp cutoff at the top of the pattern. What many people don't understand is that fog lights are not driving lights, and they aren't intended to reach out and melt things half a mile in front of you. They are for driving in ... fog, which means they are optimized for lighting the road surface and the shoulder right in front of the vehicle without reflecting much light back from the fog. So they are aimed low. Under federal (and most states') law, "fog" lights are supposed to operate only with the low beam headlights and must switch off automatically when you flip the headlights to high beam. The Marchals used on the early XJs and MJs were true fog lights, and the factory wiring allowed them to operate only when the low beams were in use. Now what i have on my bumper right now is driving lights that act as fogs (don't' ask i don't know but they cut like fogs) since spot LEDs are more light driving likes and flood are more wider and not good for on-coming traffic, (this idea is just based on the info gathered so far) would if be a good idea to replace my driving lights on my bumper with spot lights and replace the ones on my roll bar with flood lights? Now i do have a question about a light bar i came across last night, it's got spot lights and flood lights build in, spots are on the ends and flood is in the center, how would that benifet anyone? redwolf624
sorry i had that backwards, the led light bar has spot lights in the middle and flood on the ends, but my same question is still there,http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F4MQJ5O/ref=s9_simh_gw_p263_d0_i4?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-2&pf_rd_r=0SQS9TFBGTZ4WM3FZZRK&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=1970566542&pf_rd_i=desktop#productDetails Redwolf
