88whitemanche
What's up fellas I was wondering if it's the turn signal switch... Last night before i got home before running some errands my turn signals worked perfect...I got home and an hour later I went out to run some errands when I realized that my turn signal didn't come on... My brake lights work My reverse lights work My night lamps work and headlamps as well... Just my turn signals don't work any more... I checked fuses and none were melted... Could it be the switch? I can get one at my local autoparts for $30...
ftpiercecracker1
Don't you hate when that happens? Just when you think you got everything working perfect and then BAM! Something goes out. You said you checked fuses and none of them were melted but did you actually pull them out and check them or did you look at the tops just to make sure that none were actually melted down? It could be the switch but the switch usually doesn't go out all of a sudden. Its tends to wear out slowly, at least from my experience. How about your dash lights to those work? And do your indicators light up on the dash or do you get nothing.
sloride
Had the same them happen recently. It was the flasher relay at the fuse box.
88whitemanche
Yes I pulled the fuses and all were in good shape... Indicators don't even show up... and where is this relay?
ParadiseMJ
The fact that the indicators didn't show points to a bad switch. Usually if the flasher goes out the indicators show up as solid on but I could be wrong about that. The flasher is one of two cylinder shape plug in relays in the fuse box under the dash. I think the one on the left is for blinkers, the one on the right is for hazard flashers. Try swapping them and see if anything changes. If one is bad...replace, about $10. If you do any towing get the "heavy duty" flasher to accomodate the trailer lights as well.
88whitemanche
Ok...oh i forgot to mention that my hazards do work... And how do I know if they are bad? Edit: reread the post...I'll go and check them in a bit...
88whitemanche
So I checked the relays like paradisemj and sloride said to do and nothing happened...so I so happen to check the fuses again and it ended up being the fuse.... If you look at the fuse the middle stem it doesn't show that it was blown but if you look on the left side it seemed to have melted the plastic and kind of inflamed the fuse...if I hadnt compared one fuse to the other I wouldn't have noticed it...so I added another new fuse and boom I have my turn signals again...thanks guys
ftpiercecracker1
Those fuses can be the biggest PITA.
Strokermjcomanche
It's always best to check both sides of the fuse with a test light just for that reason . Good to see it was only a fuse .
Rockfrog
I replaced all my fuses with those new indicator ones. They light an led on top when they blow, makes life way easier that way. And as for flasher relays, when mine went out the other day it would work like a bulb was out (rapid flashing) then work normally after a bit of that, then rapid again. Swapped it for the hazard to test. The hazard relay is actually the HD signal relay (at least on my 88 it is).
HOrnbrod
I replaced all my fuses with those new indicator ones. They light an led on top when they blow, makes life way easier that way. That's a good idea. I never knew they existed. Just the thing needed for the dark driver's firewall fuse panel.
Rockfrog
Just saw them when I was picking up some bits, thought it was a neat idea and less hassle when crammed in the footwell.

lanciat
One other thing to check for when experiencing turn signal problems -- the metal spring holder for the fuse within the fuse block itself. I experienced turn signal problems in my '89 Pioneer for the better part of three years, and threw parts at the problem (new flasher, new turn signal switch, complete set of new fuses), only to see the problem reoccur periodically. Turns out that, upon close examination of the fuse block, the metal spring holder in the block for the turn signal fuse had broken (only half of it remained in the block). My electrician solved the problem by routing that electrical line to a new auxilary fuse holder. Don't know whether the spring breaking was due to clutch fluid leaking into the fuse block from a failing clutch master cylinder, or whether the fuse holders simply become brittle over time. But, for those of you with wonky turn signals, it's worth a look.

MJmk
I have an 88 MJ and have been trying to fix my blinkers for a while now. i have headlights running lights and dash lights. no blinkers or brake lights. replaced all fuses and both relays to no avail. any suggestions? The first step is to make sure you have power from the battery to the fuse box, so if you haven't done so yet, get a test light and probe the top of the fuses as mentioned above. If you have a stick, check for fuse box damage from a leaking clutch master cylinder. I love Bend! was there 4 times last year. 3 mountain biking trips, one climb up South Sister...good times! And my Comanche was sold new at Smolich Jeep
conker
Turns out that, upon close examination of the fuse block, the metal spring holder in the block for the turn signal fuse had broken I'm not sure what exactly this means but I'm praying this is what my issue is. conker
ha! it wasn't the same issue but that got me on the right track. PO crammed a few fuses in crooked(don't ask me how you manage that) and the contacts were too spread for the blinkers to work. put some globs of solder on a fuse and put it in and they're cherry.
