thejim42 Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 I got have a friend that has a 95 v8 zj with 4 wheel disc brakes. What parts can I use on my 88 mj other than the MC and brake booster?
AeroNautical Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 The tie rod is a nice upgrade, front axle should be bolt on. Depending on what the axle is, you can swap your drums for it's disc rears, I did that with my 8.25 rear with some light grinding.
thejim42 Posted September 5, 2014 Author Posted September 5, 2014 What about swapping the drive train and dash into the 86 I've stripped down? I know I'd have to figure out the motor mounts and some of the electrical
yxmj Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Why change just the disc's.....what rear end is it....a 44? If so grab the whole thing
88whitemanche Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 If it is a 44.... iirc they are aluminum in the zj/wjs... So they aren't desirable if your wheel your truck...
thejim42 Posted September 5, 2014 Author Posted September 5, 2014 I'm just using my truck for a dd, camping, work and occasional playing in the mud
Pete M Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 that rear 44 isn't desirable for anything. the 35 is a better axle. and that's sayin' something.
thejim42 Posted September 5, 2014 Author Posted September 5, 2014 that rear 44 isn't desirable for anything. the 35 is a better axle. and that's sayin' something.I agree. D44s are more expensive to fix too. I'm running a d35 in my dd and I've never had an issue.
thejim42 Posted September 5, 2014 Author Posted September 5, 2014 I don't need a different rear axle. I'd like to keep the 3.07s because of the amount of highway driving I do and I need the gas mileage.
shelbyluvv Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 The rear is D35. If it is running and you want a bastard of a project read through my Black Betty thread and swap the entire drive train and build a engine harness. You will need a custom radiator, driveshafts, transfer linkage and a ton of other parts to make it all play nice.
Eagle Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Why change just the disc's.....what rear end is it....a 44? If so grab the whole thing With a B8 it's a Dana 44, but it's the crappy aluminum housing "Dana 44." It may be the only axle in the known universe that's less desireable than a Dana 35 for Jeep applications. Even worse -- although it's called a "Dana 44," it doesn't take standard D44 parts. Take the brakes and adapt them to whatever axle you have in your truck. Sell the rest for scrap.
88ComancheMitch Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Sway bar I'd thicker on v8 zjs and I've heard they make a heck of a difference
shelbyluvv Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 My donor ZJ had a D35 behind the 5.2 V8. The early years were screwy with the ZJ.
dscowell Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Sway bar I'd thicker on v8 zjs and I've heard they make a heck of a difference Change the sway bar very good easy upgrade.
Minuit Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 The sway bar will provide a nice improvement in cornering (if that's a desirable trait to you. Big sway bars will hurt front suspension flex, but you can always disconnect it) if and only if the new sway bar is thicker. I'm pretty sure V8 ZJs got 26mm bars at least, and some had 28mm bars. The standard for MJs and XJs is 24mm IIRC. Obviously the bigger one will reduce body roll the most. As with anything, the only way to be sure is to measure it yourself. If you switch sway bars you'll need matching bushings as well. Poly bushings will further reduce body roll, since they aren't soft like rubber.
thejim42 Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 What about the steering box? Or any other steering parts?
Minuit Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 The ZJ steering box has a "quicker" ratio (12.7 for the ZJ vs 14.0 for the MJ - I think.) which means that the wheels turn more for a certain amount of steering wheel movement. I've heard it makes the truck feel more nimble on the road. I plan to do it myself eventually. I believe hornbrod has done it on his truck - he'll know the details.

I just got a ZJ box and MJTJNJ has one, he convinced me to do it. It's worth it.
