onlyinajeep726 Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 I'm thinking really hard about upgrading the front half of my XJ with long arms. I usually avoid RC stuff like the plague, but in searching for just a long arm upgrade kit, RC's 4-6in LA kit (#689u) is the only one I've been able to find. Looks like it is quality, but I want to hear from people who have actually used it and what you all think. If there are other kits out there, feel free to post links.

onlyinajeep726 Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 The link didn't take me directly to what you had intended (said session had timed out :dunno: ). Anyway, I did go through the menus and found the upgrade kit that I'm guessing you were linking to for $949.05.
Timeless Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 If the RC kit is the only upgrade you can find, you need to search better. Clayton, TNT, Iron Rock, Synergy, Rusty's, Rock Krawler all make LA upgrade kits.
onlyinajeep726 Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 Yea, I was being dumb this morning and my search terms weren't yielding what I was looking for. I've since found more... But the RC one is the most cost friendly.
Timeless Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 RK 3 link can be had for around $700 shipped. Clayton and TNT are pretty stiff on pricing. IRO is $600 or so I think, but its a bit of a weird setup.
Mjobession Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 The Rusty's setup I was looking at looks way cheaper then the RC kit
Alexia Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 If you hate yourself and wish to replace it all later buy the Rough Country kit. They do the absolute minimal engineering on their products.
Eagle Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 If you hate yourself and wish to replace it all later buy the Rough Country kit. They do the absolute minimal engineering on their products. Whereas Clayton is an industrial engineer who developed his longarm setup specifically for his own, personal ZJ Grand Cherokee. It had to be bullet-proof, because when Clayton wheels he's an animal. It worked so well that other members of his local club started asking him to make copies for them. Pretty soon he had convinced his company to let him take over an unused corner of the warehouse, and Clayton's Offroad was born. A few years later they moved into their own quarters.
JeepcoMJ Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I loved the rc long arms. But not on an MJ. Choices are to cut cab supports to fit it, or modify crossmember.
benjy_26 Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I dig the Clayton equipped rigs I've driven and ridden in. If I were looking at going long arms, I'd eat ramen for Clayton, with a nod given to IRO.
wvzj Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I am very pleased with the Rock Krawler LA's on my ZJ. It's been on there 10 years now with no problems other than rebuilding the joints a few years ago.
MuddFoot Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 http://ironman4x4fab.com/Products/LAK.html never used. but had his shortarms on my xj with re drop brackets. never could mess his arms up. his track bar is great too.

But by the time you add the cost of the cross member or custom mounting what would the cost it be? Some of these kits, like this one, leave out many expensive requirements. A guy I wheel with and who I have helped build a jeep or two for others has the IRO LA kit. It is a bit of a weird design and his XJ has no issues on road but it is not a DD. They work well off-road as well and I have driven it both places. Like most of these kits they actually convert the front to a radius arm set-up. The IRO only connects once side's top axle mount to the LA where most link both. I don't know why but the kit is pretty complete and they have a good rep and they 'wheel their own stuff. http://www.ironrockoffroad.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=IROR&Product_Code=IR-XLAU&Category_Code=PFX
onlyinajeep726 Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 That is a strange design... I don't know how I feel about that.
SW86 Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Rock krawler 3 link here for years. Zero issues besides upgrading the joints to the newer style which are rebuildable. I wheel very hard and they have held up great. They are my front axle sliders LOL! Plus I like how the brackets aren't part of the crossmember and they don't interfere with the cab supports either.
onlyinajeep726 Posted April 12, 2014 Author Posted April 12, 2014 Anybody know anything about the Rubicon Express LA upgrade?
