JeepUtah Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Possible? dumb idea? your thoughts? can you just bolt on a short bed to a long bed frame? Thanks for your input
Tactical Bacon Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 I believe the only option is to cut about 8 inches out of the back of the bed and then weld it back up.
TheDirtyJeep401 Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Short bed trucks have a smaller wheel base than a long bed. The bed won't fit. Only choice I know is to bobb the bed. Atleast thats all that I have seen......
kolton Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Search "Bed Bob". You can cut much more than 8" out of your bed, but then you get creative with shackle mounts. Just look around and gather info through searching. Check out some of the TOYOTA guys as well on Pirate4x4. It the same idea with either truck. I'd do it the way that MNKYBOY did and leave the floor of the bed intact, it ends up looking cleaner that way. MNKYBOY bobbed his short bed Best longbed bob I've seen is "my wife's MJ" in the projects section.
Pete M Posted October 24, 2013 Posted October 24, 2013 yup, long beds are a foot longer than SBs, but that's 6 inches behind and 6 inches in front of the rear tire.
carnuck Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 I set a shortbox bed on a long box frame. I was planning to use the 2 dr XJ doors and extend the cab back to take up the front 6" + a bit. Then I got my Honcho stepside with much more interior room
mvusse Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 yup, long beds are a foot longer than SBs, but that's 6 inches behind and 6 inches in front of the rear tire. I might be splitting hairs, but I thought it was more like 7 in front and 5 behind the wheels.
Pete M Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 admittedly I haven't measured. :dunno: I've just been going by the numbers in the books. lb MJs have 6" more wheelbase than sb MJs.
mvusse Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 113 vs 119.9 according to my 87 owner's manual.
neohic Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Not sure how everything finished, but it looked promising on the grunt work on the frame: http://comancheclub.com/topic/28486-86-shortbed/. Also... depending on how short you want to go: http://comancheclub.com/topic/18014-and-it-begins/?hl=frame+cut&do=findComment&comment=186061.
johnj92131 Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Just my opinion, and it is worth exactly what you paid for it.!!! If you want a short bed truck. BUY one. Don't bastardize a long bed. It will still be a Bastard, no matter what you do to/with it. For me, way too much work/expense. End risk is you will have a POS with no resale value other than scrap value. Worst comes to worst, scrap the long bed and start over with a short bed.
Pete M Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 don't think I've ever seen .9 before. I've seen .1 and .4 113 vs 119.9 according to my 87 owner's manual.
mvusse Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 Not real clear, but the best I can do for now.
Pete M Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 neat :D let's hear it for Jeep consistency!
mvusse Posted October 29, 2013 Posted October 29, 2013 neat :D let's hear it for Jeep consistency! Hey, it's a Jeep thing!
dave92cherokee Posted October 30, 2013 Posted October 30, 2013 The super rare extra short box MJ. Not to go to far off topic but what kind of suspension are you running in the back? I don't see any arms for a 4 link, nor do I see any springs past the wheels which seems more like and eliptical setup in the rear.
