Disappearing People

I just today realized that some of the veteran members who used to be frequent posters have dropped off the radar without warning. Checking their profiles I was surprised to see that some have not been on as far back as 2008, with others only being gone for 8 months or so.

 

 

How could someone with thousands of posts suddenly disappear without people noticing until 5 years later? Or am I the only one?

 

Or is this whole world just a figment of my imagination that won't go away while I'm in a straight jacket in an institution somewhere?

I personally vanished for a few years because I was MJ-less and exploring the excitement of other vehicles I always wanted but was disappointed with in one way or another, and others were just what I always figured but past owners didn't take care of them well enough and I got sick of fixing things. Then I was very active on IFSJA and FSJnetwork because I had a Gladiator which I should have kept but I was missing having an MJ more than the cool factor of the Gladiator. I'll get another someday.

 

When I finally returned recently I too noticed a lot of people missing, a lot of new names, and some old names but they don't seem to be as active as they were. My MJ may not be currently running sadly (and will be that way for awhile still even though I already got all the parts since I just don't have time to wrench), but I'm pretty active again nonetheless. The addiction has a hold of me again for sure and everyone here is still as great as ever.

 

I think rough times have made most rethink things and the hobby vehicles have had to go. They seem to be making a slow comeback though.

I too have noticed the veteran members slowly "taking a back seat" to the newer, more vocal ones. I myself have stopped posting as much because I tire of members who post the same "stock" answers over and over again without taking time to actually read the post or even personalize the response. While the answers given might be factually correct there is a definite lack of empathy for the person with the problem, which tends to impersonalize the whole issue.

I tend to visit the site less when I'm not working on an MJ.  Bought a house last year and started converting my entire fleet to diesel vehicles so I became much more active on the TDIClub and Cumminsforums.  Finally got a diesel powerplant to swap into my MJ so back on here seeing what everyone else is up to.

 

I know a few members weren't too happy with the forum layout switch and used that as an excuse to stop coming around.

I much like  GirsMJ86  have been MJ'less for the last 5 years. in that time my wife and I moved into our own house and i had sold my MJ and bought a buick Roadmaster wagon. I joined up with the GM Long roof community and the station wagon forums. those guys are a very tight knit group and make you feel like family. i got bored with my wagon and have always missed my MJ so i found one that almost fits what i wanted (really wanted a 6 cyl...i got a 4) and thusly....i have returned....and I'm not letting this one go (unless its for a 4.0 longbed) . i can't believe jeepcomj is sick of MJ's..... :???:

I gotta say that even if this is true, that this forum is far far better than others I have been on over the years in that, even when the same responses get tossed in casually, they do not that I have noticed include the distain, ridicule and sarcasm that has me no longer on those "other" forums. I think that in most cases that it is fairly normal for the old guard guys to take a back seat so to speak as the rookies get more versed in the craft/cult and begin to carry a torch as well. it is all part of the community feel and nature of the group. It is an absolute fact that I as a person have gotten far more anti-social and sarcastic as I have gotten older And less tolerant of idiots and a**holes. I think in all probability most of us being honest have. It is not surprising that it comes out in my day to day real world self on a regular basis. ( I frequently open my mouth if for no other reason than to change feet)

I think it is pretty cool that I almost never see that here...Silence is one thing flaming sarcasm is another. I (as a rookie /novice) appreciate the lack of the latter immensely.

That's my 2 cents worth anyway.

Your comment is well thought out and I do agree with you. Pete and the other admins have worked long and hard to keep the "Go look for yourself because you are an idiot" attitudes clearly at bay.

 

As far as anti-social and less tolerant...well, my kids would definitely agree that's me all over.. :yes:

I see where you are coming from. I'm currently more "active" with the KJ community....though there is much disdain (on my part) towards a mini van on steroids, and they know it.

 

I feel like, until the "right MJ" comes along, there is no point in having one. I just scrapped my first ever MJ, it was my second vehicle, first project....what I learned to do everything on, from engine swap to interior to body work. But it's hard to justify repairing something that is worth $250 when you have $7000 into it.

 

One day I will have another, but I'm going to be extremely picky. it will have to have the most perfect body imaginable, though I don't care about the mechanicals...because they will be swapped for another buick 3800.

I suppose that's a way to look at it. Bleed and sweat something, gain zero respect over it, making yourself bitter about it in the process, and that's the position you end up in.
