idboy16
I've got an 01 XJ and I REALLY want to start on an MJ but I have no idea what price to pay. I want a 4wd and in fair(running) condition. Anything helps. Thanks
Myron
I paid $1000 for a clean, rust free 88 4cylinder without any option but 4x4. Didn't even get power steering. Also have about $2700 in an 88 6cylinder with 4x4, 6 cylinder, A/C (not working, but it's there), and an ugly little wrecked spot in the back. It's all in how bad you want one and how long you're willing to wait for a good deal. I imagine you could get a good truck $2-3K.
87Warrior
You will find MJ price and condition vary greatly across the USA. I know several guys here have picked up rust free, running, 4.0 4x4 trucks for less than $500. Then their are those like me who paid $3k for a (sort of) running rusty '92 and $400 for a non running rusty '86. These trucks are becoming quite popular so the prices keep going up. Is the XJ in good shape? Wanna trade for a trusty rusty 86 MJ + cash? (only sort of kidding.....)
rmoore1031
Price varies everywhere. Got a mine for cheap but its 2wd, rusted floors, and dented bed. Usually see them going for $1000 minimum. Then a built one goes for a few thousand.
idboy16
I don't want a built one. I'm looking for one to build. So basically running with no rust.

NHMJXJ
The right price is what it's worth "to you". Be ready and buy what you want when you find it. That said, realize you'll find the right truck after you buy the one you bought.
ftpiercecracker1
MJ price and condition vary GREATLY across the USA. Only two on CL in Boise, http://boise.craigslist.org/cto/3780514993.html http://boise.craigslist.org/ctd/3754251271.html Spokane, Idaho http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/3797648166.html http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/3805520589.html http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/3763959255.html http://spokane.craigslist.org/bar/3780745026.html http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/3719255715.html http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/3807779420.html No pics Twin Falls, Idaho http://twinfalls.craigslist.org/cto/3783318075.html FWIW, i bought mine in the great state of Florida for a $1000, it had some rust, more than what i would have liked. Eliminator, low mile 4.0, ax-15, 4x4, all factory skids, bed liner. On a scale of 1-10. 10 being show room condition, 1 being not even worthy of the scrap yard, i would have given my MJ a solid 6.
gogmorgo
Cool, my dad's from that area. I paid $2700 for my 91 4x4 4.0 auto, a fair amount of rust but still not bad for the area (Manitoba, Canada) 300,000 miles (but fairly well maintained), 90k miles on an engine rebuild, with a valid safety certification. PO paid 3000 the previous fall and put another grand into it to get it safetied (I've got the receipts, bill of sale, and inspection forms). He briefly needed a truck and didn't any more. Only put about 6000 miles on it in about ten months. I'm reasonably certain I overpaid, but am not sore over it. My biggest expenses were registration and insurance, and then new tires. If I needed to turn around and sell it now, I'd ask for $2000.
Bmoore2
I paid 2500 for mine but it already had SOA 6 inch lift and dry rotted 33's. Some floor board rust but a solid body and only 83000 miles when I picked her up. ;)
H3RESQ
I have seen rust free ones for $1200 around here. Even got a rust free Metric ton (d44 rear) with no rust but 240K miles for $600! I got a really clean, fresh motor, well cared for 88 for $3500. Some would say that's a lot, but it was truly clean and cared for. Had 31's, alum bumper on front and canopy. Everything worked, nothing weird...I thought it was a fair price. Sorry about underline, not sure what I did...lol
Bornindesert
Another data point for ya. Just bought a rust free 1988 beater DD in Mesa, AZ for $700, was listed for $1,000. It was all stock, mostly all original and mechanically well maintained. 150,000 miles, 4.0L 5sp 4X4 short box. You can check it out in the 88 directory. Also recently have seen some nicer, lifted and decent ones list for $3,000 and were sold in less than a day. All Phoenix CL postings. Looking at a rust free straight short box Comanche bed, tailgate and tail light lenses for $400 later today. Not a steal but I think worth picking up. It's at a towing salvage yard here being broke up for parts.
jimoshel
I've acquired 15 MJ'S over a period of time. The cheapest I ever got one for was a freebie. The most I've ever paid for one was $600 and that was in worse condition than any of the ones i got for $400, or less. The best deal i ever got was a '87 for $300. That was 3 years ago. Cleaned it up and it's been my DD since.

1987Comanche
I've purchased 3 needy MJs over the years ('87 2.5 AX-5 2WD, '90 4.0 AX-15 4WD, '92 AX-15 2WD) and the most expensive one was $930. That was just the initial purchase price...I dumped at least $1500-$2K into each one in order to bring it back to life.

GirsMJ86
I've bought four over the years. The first was an '88 Eliminator (4.0L, 2WD, Automatic, complete bucket interior) that had some bad rust in the floors and the spots on the body were bondo filled then it was painted - $2000 locally Second was an '86 X (2.8L, 4x4 Selec-Trac, Auto, buckets) solid body but the 2.8 ended up leaking oil like nothing else - $1400 from NJ Third was my '91 Eliminator I bought from Automan on here and is in my signature - $2500 delivered from Chicago area with a trailer full of parts Forth is my current: '86 X or XLS (rebuilt 2.8L with Holley 2D fuel injection, Edelbrock intake manifold and other stuff, rebuilt AX5, 4x4 Command-Trac, black interior with bench, factory rollbar, factory marchal fog and roll bar lights, new BFG AT KO tires, other odds n ends) mostly solid body, cancer is only just starting in spots - $1800 locally My recent one I feel has been my best purchase, though the '91 was a great truck I wish I had kept. I've seen ones that should be priced higher go for less or absolute trashed ones go for more. Some people just think they are sitting on gold with these. I feel they are only worth what you're willing to pay. For reference I bought my '74 J10 for $3000 and it came with a whole lot of extra new parts, rebuilt 3spd w/RAM clutch, new 33" BFG AT KOs on Pacer Daytona steelies, solid body with only minor cancer starting and floor boards already replaced, 4" lift, Dolphin gauges, and some other stuff I'm sure I'm forgetting. Went to Madison, IN to get it and drove it home.
