Hello all,

Popping in to say hello. I recently acquired a comanche. its as follows

1987 (not sure of trim)

metric ton

7 foot bed

extra capacity fuel tank

4x4 (need to work on)

bucket swap (this is still a work in progress because the bench brackets were rusted out so attaching new seats from a cherokee sport by drilling new holes and using grade 8 bolts washers and nuts).

thats about what I know at the moment, according to one of my buddies this particular setup is supposedly rare to find (I'll let you guys tell me the truth of it). I'm in the middle of repainting it and a few others things but in my mind got it for a steal at 1k and only have about 200 extra into it.

Well thats really about it any questions feel free to ask :)

Metric ton is rare. Pics?? And welcome

lol I doubt it. Supposedly accoridng to him what is rare is finding a seven foot bed and the ginormous fuel tank ect ect. Its why I said you guys could tell me lol.

This first picture is showing the condition I got the truck in. The guy had painted it with a paint brush.

This second picture is newer. I've painted one side of it, Right now its in the driveway with the new to me buckets sitting in it half bolted down lol.

I'm still working on some things. I'm going to be looking into swapping the cluster so it is not just dummy lights. I've also got to look as to why it is not kicking into 4x4. Axle will disconnect and stuff just no 4 wheel lol.

How "ginormous" is the tank? As far as I know, the long beds aren't all that rare (at least among MJ's) and I think the there were only two tank options, one for short beds and a bigger one for long beds (but I could be wrong). What is somewhat rare among MJ's is the Metric Ton. You get a very coveted factory Dana 44 under the rear end and heavier springs. Good for a 2200lb payload, or one metric ton.

Decent looking truck and not a bad price either. A steal compared to what I foolishly paid for mine. Good that you only are $200 up on it. I've spent over $1500 on mine in the last six months... Most of that's in snow tires, though.

Youre 4x4 problem could be the vacuum seal on the front axle. Those things always have a problem. You can just move the fork over to permantely make the front axle complete, and you won't notice a darn thing until it's been put into 4wd. Never really understood why they made that one shaft 2 pieces with a vacuum connector.

Definitely definitely going to look into it. There are a number of places where I can go out and take it on some trails here. Also right now most of the roads I go down get very slushy. Its kinda fun though doing a mini drift onto my road lol.

Welcome to the club.

Truck looks nice, congrats on getting the addiction.

Your second pic shows your truck without the visor,

if you still have it, are you interested in selling it?

I was actually wondering what to do with it. I've got it back on the truck at the moment but its annoying me as I'm on the highway it almost buzzes at a certain speed. Its tightened down as much as it can be but I think the people did not put it on completely straight. during the summer I'm going to be taking it off and bondo the holes and then paint the roof to match the rest of the truck.

Welcome aboard!

Ty!

Thank you all for to warm welcome. As for the tank last time i fully filled it near empty it took 22 someodd gallons to get it full. this is beastly. This truck is definitely solid so far I've done the valve cover gasket, Exhaust gasket (which lead me to findout there is a bolt snapped off), re-installed stock airbox, painted, buckets. so really not bad.

I was wondering if you might be willing to explain this a little more. I do apologize I forgot to ask before

Actually, 23.5 gallon tank was optional in 1987.  Standard long bed tank was 18 gallons.  23.5 tank became standard long bed about 1990/91

Standard tank size for the long bed is 23.5 gallons. That being said, after running my long bed right down to empty, I once put 26 gallons into it...

He's talking about the Central Axle Disconnect (CAD).

You've got a two-piece axle on the passenger side, and the CAD is basically a collar that slides over to connect the two sections when you shift into 4x4, and slides back, disconnecting them when you go back to 4x2. Because it's vacuum operated, it's not difficult for it to fail.

You can fix it properly, or you can pull the motor off, slide the collar over, and then put the motor back in upside down, which locks the two axle sections together. This will in no way affect 2wd performance, since the front driveshaft is disconnected at the transfer case in 2wd.

Welcome to the club!  Did you get the Slund visor also?  Good score.  $1000 is a nice price!  I paid $1150 for my 91 long bed metric ton with a SnugTop shell.  Again, Welcome!

:yeah that:

I even did something different. Since the motor was bad on mine, I opened it up and took the little fork off, slid the rods into position to what it would be like in 4x4 and put the fork back to lock the 2 pieces together permanently. Wasnt too tough, and I never have to worry about it again.

Sweet this sounds quite a bit simplier than I thought it would be. Well as it stands this thing just failed inspection last night. What it failed for was not that bad really. Passenger outer tie rod end, Small hole on drivers side that goes to cab, Cracked brake line over rear axle. So overall really really not bad. got an extra ten days to get the stuff done and while under there for that going to check out the 4x4 and also re-installl the sway bar as well. thank you both for the prompt response!

Honestly I'm not sure about the visor (it came with the truck). I'm going to be getting rid of it once it warms up as it takes a decent chunk of view out. I also just installed new to me buckets (which happen to have the curved rails lol) and that is not helping.

Did you ever get rid of the visor?
