Went to the gun show and this little thing followed me home.

Romanian WASR AK-47.

Anyone know where I can get better furniture for it? The wood it came with is dull and ugly.

If the wood isn't damaged, just sand it down and re-stain it with a gun stock or walnut type stain topped off with a good linseed oil. You'd be surprised how nice it will look for very little cost.

We confiscated and gave out tons of AK variants in Iraq. The lowest quality versions I saw were the Yugoslavian and Chinese versions. Russian and American made are the best, the Romanian versions weren't too bad. Chinese versions are stamped junk, they were the worst.

There were a few Russian made AKs there. But for what the asking price was, I wasn't willing to get one. No American made ones. A few Polish ones were there, but the quality was crap comparatively speaking. The Romanian ones were a fair enough price for me to be comfortable with. Honestly I was looking for a modestly priced AK because I was also looking for a good Colt or Sig Sauer 1911 as well. As for the reviews, well.......its an AK. For me, its just what was stated. A toy. I don't expect excellent accuracy or top quality out of it. For me and my boys to have fun with at the gun range or on the property. If I want to reach out and touch something with accuracy in mind, that's what the Browning .308 is for. Either way, in my opinion, its all about what you want.

And I agree on cheaperthandirt.com. they have good prices. I go there or to midway for ammo/reloading supplies. As far as the furniture, I'm open to restain it to the classic Russian red. I was asking about replacement wood because I haven't ruled out exotic woods like zebrawood or burlwood for example.

Put about 150 rounds through it today. Accuracy was pretty good with iron sights at 50 yards. I didn't have quite enough room at the property to stretch it out to 100 safely. It performed as I expected (hoped) and just pop pop popped with no misfires. All in all it was a good way to burn about an hour and have a blast. The targets would tend to disagree I think!

Ak's are the best gun ever made!!!

Just keep the front grip wood or if you swap it for a rail, 4arm grip the front!

My barrel gets extremely hot after 80 rounds with no 4arm grip.

x3 cheaperthandirt.com That's where I have been getting my AR gear from, their prices are awesome. An AK is going to be my next rifle purchase.. or an AR-15 platform that chambers 7.62x39

I discovered a certain gun while at the show. Its based on the AK platform. Anyone ever heard of a saiga 12? I have absolutely no need for one. But I really want one.

the saiga 12 is the shotgun version of the AK, my uncle's friend has one and loves it

Just tossin this out there, but with the cost of ammo i like savin up and buying in bulk. luckygunner.com is my favorite, but for 7.62x39 and .223, I hear summit ammunition is one of the best bulk suppliers out there

Enjoy your new toy. Romanian AK's are a good value. I may be wrong, but I was told that no Russian AK's were to be sold in the US. The main drawback of the Romie's is the sights may not be straight-you can fix that yourself with a drift and a hammer. The AK is not target rifle but it's the best at what it was made for-it will go bang everytime you pull that trigger-in most any environment.

Well, here it is wearing new colors.

And sitting next to its twin.

Just thought I'd give an update. I'm thinking I may reshoot the rest of it in a gloss black to give it a little bling.

we have a wasr as well. I would say for what it is its great... and all the talk saying its not accurate... ehhh idk I would disagree, for iron sights on a semi auto assault rifle its pretty darn good! we were streching dads out pretty far and we were surprised. But like someone stated, if you want to reach out and hit something, get a better tool jamminz.gif
