89 Eliminator Renix Need Help Please!
one2hunt replied to one2hunt's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Removed and checked the 02 censor. Disconnecte and reconnected the CPS. I run a business aside from working on an oil rig so time spent on my ride is money lost. I lost daylight and gotta load the truck for work tomorrow so the best I can do is pray that my mechanic knows how to use a tester and check everything without me having to replace 1k worth of parts only to end up selling my truck(that still doesn't run right) for scrap price. Thanks guys-but I think I'm screwed. I've lived here for 10 yrs and canot seem to find a good mechanic-one that can acrually diagnose a problem without just changing parts until the problem is alieved.>Chris -
89 Eliminator Renix Need Help Please!
one2hunt replied to one2hunt's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Is the output at the tailpipe a reliable indicator? I can redline it in neutral. I just removed and blew out the IAC with throttle body cleaner. As of now my mechanic has replaced the TPS to the tune of $235. I shopped the part and am not happy but he's done right by me before so I'll take the hit this time. He won't take my money because it's not fixed but bottom line is in 2 days I have to report to work 5 1/2 hrs away and my truck is my ONLY source of transportation. If I can't make it to work then I don't have a job. I'm trying to avoid the easter egg hunt approach-as in replacing 55+ dollar parts one at a time hoping to eliminate the problem. I thought it could be the catalytic converter too but 3 people so far said no. Should I just remove it and replace it before my next inspection to see? I can't weld good enough to do the job so it will be more money out of pocket on a fishing expedition. -
Ok fellas, the ol girl has thrown me a curve again and I need help. My mechanic just diagnosed it as a TPS and it didn't fix it. I drive 5 1/2 hrs to my new job every 14 days and then 60 per dayround trip to and from the oil rig. My 4.0 MJ started breaking up bad to the rig last trip. Losing power-the more I tried to excellerate the more power I seemed to lose. It got to the point where I couldn't get above 5mph on an incline. I changed the fuel filter. Blew out the vacuum lines with carb cleaner, ran gas treatment through the tank-4 tanks now-all 94 octane. It got slightly better and I was able to sustain 55-65 mph for most of the 5 1/2 hr trip home-actually now closer to 7 hrs. I love the ol girl and really don't want to let her go. I have 4 days til I head back. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why Would I Smell Clutch Please
one2hunt replied to one2hunt's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks guys-hdn't thought that it could be a brake issue and the truck has had a noticable los of power. I wouldn't doubt if the e break cables or linkage were twisted or binding due to the impact somehow. I will for sure have time tomorrow to get it figured out. Wheel bearings this weekend and maybe a 2 inch lift and new shocks too if a friend comes through. -
Hey all. Did my first hitch in the oil fields and my little red MJ took a beatin. I was on a $hitty ranch road, got dusted by a semi and hit a BIG speed bump because I didn't see it. I looked my truck over and aside from a flat and I'm pretty sure busted shocks(they were original anyway my guess)-I didn't find anything busted or twisted. But I do smell clutch now. Do you think I might have busted a tranny mount? Would that cause the clutch to slip. As stated before, I am no shade tree mechanic. I'm getting better at maintenance and repair but my diagnostic skills are still nil. Any help would be great. Also-the truck sits as it came off the factory and I want to lift it 2 inches in the future even though it's 2wd-should I just buy a set of gabriel or monroe shocks til then-any pros or cons to common auto part store shock absorbers? I'm doing alot of ranch road travelling to and from the oil rig and I'm sure new shocks are in short order. Thanks in advance for any advice>Chris

Hey, there's another 89 on Austin CL. I'm going to look at it I hope he can be talked into a straight trade for mine. Mine's an eliminator 5 sp and his is a base model with an auto. Good trade? About the same mileage-he claims a lot of work has recently been done. What do you guys think. I haven't set forth the proposition yet.

OK so my 89 liminator DD shows signs of living it's life in the Texas sun. The roof of the cab and the hood is hail damaged. I am planning on attempting to do the bodywork and paint myself but am looking for resources on how to. Is there an alternative to bondo? I was told that it causes rust and my truck is 100% rust free so I don't see the point of using it. I've googled the dry ice trick but wonder how long 30-40 hail bumps will take me and what sucess I'll have. Thanks in advance guys-you are a treasure trove of info.>Chris

Enjoy your new toy. Romanian AK's are a good value. I may be wrong, but I was told that no Russian AK's were to be sold in the US. The main drawback of the Romie's is the sights may not be straight-you can fix that yourself with a drift and a hammer. The AK is not target rifle but it's the best at what it was made for-it will go bang everytime you pull that trigger-in most any environment.

88 Base in Tx holy too much!!!!
one2hunt replied to one2hunt's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
As much as I know I need to watch my mouth as a Yankee living in Texas-people in this state are just ridiculous when it comes to pricing trucks in particular. I wish my truck was as shiny as this one but I wouldn't trade my MJ that I've had for almost 2 years now without a problem once I got the bugs worked out. Shiny is nice but I need a truck to get me there-and back. -

ytpe jeep commanche into Austin CL search. It's actually in San Antonio but they want WAAAAAY to much for this truck in my opinion. -
PostingID: 3198397989-hope that works. Only difference between this and my 1500 dollar 89 eliminator is the 7,500 dollar paint job I guess.

I own a 63 Pan/Shovel chopper. My first child basically. You really wouldn't believe waht it's cost me but anywayeverything is for sale right? Some guy aksed me as such one time and I gave him the old for a stupid price line-well he had a stupid price in mind-$3k-for a mint 1963 Harley that runs like a scalded dog. I just told him I didn't literally mean stupid and walked away.

--- COMANCHE OF THE MONTH AUGUST 2012 ---
one2hunt replied to Automan2164's topic in Comanche of the Month (MJOTM)
Nice rig man. I'm trying to get the paint done on mine and you've shamed me-down to the metal-rally? Beautiful job! -
I like plain old triscuits. If I get mad crazy I'll put some suprosatta and good cheese on them. But I'm low brow so thats high cuisine.

Awesome-I was in Comache country then!

Score!!!!! I am awaiting a call for where to report but my new career has begun. I'll be working on oil rigs in Ok, Ar, and Tx to start. The MJ ran from Austin, Tx to Stillwater, Ok without a hiccup. I put new/used tires on it and I swear it got better mileage with a slightly bigger tire. It throws the speedo off-didn't realize that til I turned on the gps and that was 3/4 of the way into the trip after I had already burned by many troopers apparently doing 80 hwhen I thought I was pushing the stetch I could get away with from 65. The mileage was much better coming home when I kept the RPM's right around 2000. There were alot of good ol boys up there applying for a job just like me from all over and as you can imagine it was pick up truck central. I had more guys with big ol rigs diggin the MJ than you'd believe. I ran off the road doing about 70 last month in south texas avoiding a wreck and can't believe I didn't twist up my front end, but it's been checked out and got an all clear. Now I just need to find someone to recharge my system with R12-get my rig painted-get the seats redone-because they look good but are old and compressed which sucks on long trips. Who knows if this job is as good as everyone keeps telling me it's gonna be maybe a nice 1990+ 4wd white MT is in the cards somewhere in my future.

Well guys, I'm no master mechanic so I need to go to shops. I moved to Texas from NY 8 yrs ago. I lived in NY all my life so I knew where to go plus had good friends that were excellent mechanics and shop owners. I never wanted free but the work was never crap. Since I've been here in Texas I have had no less than 5 mechanics who I built a relationship with go from being fair and doing quality work to overchrging and leaving things unfinished. I've had slight work done at chain brand shops with no terrible, but no stellar experience, but of coarse they always try the hard upsell. I'm not a little guy that looks like an accountant and it ammuses me that most people think that I'm an expert mechanic, a soldier, a fireman, or some manly man type. Don't get me wrong-I'm no girly boy, but nI'm pretty handi capped with a wrench beyond basic reapir and maintenance. Bottom line-there's people with ethics that give a $#!& and then there's the others in all shops big and small.

Thanks guys. After 25 years as a carpenter/cabinet maker the cold hard fact is that there is no future in my trade-especially witht the cheap labor here in Texas. I've got an interview with an oil company and am going t work on oil rigs, and hopefully ultimately offshore and make a decent living and actually be able to maybe retire one day. I'm 43 and have a long time before retirement so I figure a lifelong blue collar guy might as well start thinking about how the second half of his life is gonna work> Thanks again fellas!

Hello, My name is Chris and I live in Central Texas. I just wanted to take a minute to thank whoever started this board and all the knowledgable and helpful folks in here. I bought a 1989 Comanche about a year and a half ago and this board has been an invaluable and most recently kept me from getting taken once again by a dishonest mechanic. Where I doubt I will ever achieve the level of mechanical ability that most of the mebers here seem to have in perpetude, I have been able to improve the reliability and operation of my little truck through the wisdom and help found in these pages. As of tomorrow I am driving 7 hrs to start a new career and some of my friends think I'm nuts doing it in my Comanche, but with the confidence I've gained through reading here and from what I've come to expect from my Comanche, I'm sure it will be an uneventful trip. I just wanted you all to know you're doing something good.>Chris   :wrench:

Hey yall. I live near Austin, Tx and have a fiberglass camper on my 89 comanche that came off of an unknown year toyota. I'm looking for something that fits better or was actually made for the comanche. I will be traveling to Oklahoma City this coming week so if you are anywhere along the way and have or know of someone who may have something like 'm looking for please contact me. Even if you have the same year Comanch and have found a cap that works well-please let me know>Thanks>Chris 512 276 0814

92 ranger camper shell, will it fit a comanche?
one2hunt replied to skinnyg's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don't think so. I had to cut my cap to make it fit my MJ. the bed of an mj is not the same width front and rear.
