arod Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Whats up guys? Currently an 08 jk owner on a 3.5in lift with 37s. I'm looking into buying an mj and i have two options right now and i need help choosing I have an option to buy one which is 4wd, I6, 5spd rusted pretty bad with 100k and the other has no rust but is 2wd with 200+k 5sp. Which would be a better platform to start with? I'm mechanically inclined and can also do body work. Opinions needed please. Here are some pics of my jk sorry pics are so big
Jeep Driver Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I don't buy rust. My 4x MJ was a 2X but rust free and other that the bed have some dents the cab and front end is dent free. I over paid but I got what I was looking for. Cheaper in the long run to swap than repair in my opinion.
Pete M Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 what do you want to do with the MJ? what's the end goal?
arod Posted January 14, 2012 Author Posted January 14, 2012 well I won't be daily driving the MJ and I would like to make it my main off road truck. It needs to look good but main concern i guess would be off road performance
cody4359 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 you loaded your pictures funny so i woulda had to scroll sideways to read your post and didnt want to. thats my .02¢ I'm sure it didnt help
glundblad Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I also have a JK. A fully loaded 2009 2 door Rubicon. My comanche is by far my favorite of the two. Good luck with the search.
Globex Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I would buy the one with no rust issues. I like bodywork more then mechanical but these trucks get out of control when it come to rusting away. Its very easy to make these 4wd and if the miles worry you that can be fixed by putting a low miles motor in when you swap in the 4wd stuff.
SW86 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 same here. the one with no rust. making it 4wd is easy but dealing with rust is a headache. then again i wouldnt know since mine was rust free!! :chillin:
JeffN Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Buy both and use the rusted one to convert the better one to 4WD
camjeep3 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 since you want to make it your wheeler id buy the rust free 2wd. when you wrench on it you won't have to deal with the crust, and you will be able to swap in whatever axle/ratio you choose. if the higher mileage motor goes, used motors are not hard to find
Automan2164 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Buy both and use the rusted one to convert the better one to 4WD This is what I was thinking the whole time. Rob
mvusse Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Buy both and use the rusted one to convert the better one to 4WD You beat me to it.
Pete M Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 you loaded your pictures funny so i woulda had to scroll sideways to read your post and didnt want to. thats my .02¢ I'm sure it didnt help fixed it. sorta.
cody4359 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Buy both and use the rusted one to convert the better one to 4WD x2, but swap the lower mi. motor over also then make a MJ trailer out of it
arod Posted January 14, 2012 Author Posted January 14, 2012 thank you for fixing the post. I'm clearly a forum noob. The idea of buying both has def crossed my mind. Thanks for the input guys looks like i'm going to pick up the non rust 2wd this week
fcjunkie Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 How about this? Dropping in the drivetrain out of a 2005 TJ Wrangler with the 6 speed manual and the 4.0. What would you need to grab off the donor 2005 TJ? I assume you would need the computer, harness, and gas pedal. Anything else?

fcjunkie Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 That sounds like a good idea. Sorry, I got caught up in the excitement of this build as it is along the same lines of what I’m looking to do. I’m a newbie to this group but not to Jeeps in general. I have 13 Willys trucks in my stables along with a 2006 LJ Rubi. Three of mine are direct ancestors of the XJ Waggy. Here’s one of them. http://thefcconnection.com/'50_wagon.htm Can't wait to see this build through! Thanks for sharing your project with us.
Dirteatr717 Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Where's the build thread!? Good to see ANOTHER long islander! If you need a hand I'm also doing the 2wd-4wd swap in my friends manche -Nick :wavey:
