rigging up the garage

Since the weather has gone to hell around here, I’ve started on some inside projects until it warms up again. I’ve been slowly building the garage up, after epoxying the floor before we moved in. Started with a basic shelving unit a couple months ago, and built a small workbench beside it:

It stayed that way up until this weekend (my wife bought me a radial arm/compound saw for Christmas, and I had to try it out). Added a reinforced shelf above the bench, some pegboard, and a set of shelves on the other wall to stash all the Christmas junk on:

I still need to wire in more outlets (with the help of my electrician neighbor) and mount the compressor up off the floor, but it’s getting there…..

all the crap on the shelves is what we're down to leftover after the move, and we're figuring out what to do with. My vote has already been cast for the dumpster, but I think I'm being overruled :(

What are all those pink things on the top shelf ?And what you going to build with a radial arm saw ?

How come you didn't ask for a welder or a plasma cutter or ? when missus Clause was being generous ? :dunno:

Just kiddin, I'm envious, you got a wife and I don't (I mean a garage) :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Looks good Jeff, but as you well know, it ain't big enough. Especially the workbench and you'll need tons more pegboard. Pegboard is the best invention in the world - got a whole 20' wall dedicated to it - it's better than shelves for hanging light stuff so you can see it. They make adapters to hang anything. And Mama doesn't come out to my only remaining personal space and put stuff on the pegboard; she's looking for a flat space like shelves and/or benches. I spot that stuff and it's trash history. I love pegboard. 99.9% of my tools hang there. I have a 20' x 24' garage and a 14' x 14' outside heated shed, and it still ain't big enough. It's never big enough.............

It appears that you need to have a garage sale  Also you have to set boundaries... no woman stuff in the garage :smart: You see non of my old ladies stuff is in the garage :smart:

Your garage looks awesome. Give me a call man. Looks like I will be buying a bigger compressor soon if you are interested in mine.

Rigged up more shelving above the garage door today….my Jeep buddy Danny the electrician stopped by and we had several beers planning out how we’re gonna run all the ‘lectric (2 outlets back on the bench, plus a 110 and a 220 outlet up in the front below the panel). So nice to have another STEELER brother down here (he’s from McKeesport originally jamminz.gif )

Come spring mine will get a repaint of white, and after this blistering cold winter, a duct off of the main house duct into the garage for heat!!!!! :ack: Oh, yea, and for ac in the hot summer. Two windows in garage but on same wall! No cross ventilation! Besides, my MJ needs babied!

BTW, that shelving up high looks really good and a smart idea! BUT keep it sprayed with some Home Defense or something similar. Little "recluse" type of critters will love that place, and if the bite, especially more than once, you could be in a heap of trouble!

I'm about done hanging shelving (well, maybe a bit more on the other wall where the ladders are now hanging :D ). It's been too cold to paint down here lately, but I am going to do the walls shortly. It's nice working with them the way they are now.....I can see where all the studs and joists are LOL

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Oh, and my wife's hatboxes are now (in)famous here and another local forum I'm on  . I'm surprised you guys knew what they were......

I've got 2 incandescent bulb sockets (for now, anyway) in the ceiling, and I'm piggybacking (ala redneck engineering) three suspended 2-bulb 4' T12 fixtures off the ceiling, two centered and the third one sort of overtop of the workbench area. Plus a small T8 fixture under the shelf above the bench.

Until Danny and I run wiring and I hard wire the flourescents, and add three more fixtures. I know T12's are being phased out, but Lowe's has the fixtures for $8, and I bought a contractor pack of bulbs so I'll have replacements for a long time to come.

I'll get a night shot after work tonight....it's brighter than it sounds ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

started rigging up some 'lectric in the garage today.....well, not me but my Jeep buddy Danny. We lifted his Rubicon yesterday, and I brought him back two 30 packs of IC Light and a couple pounds of chipped ham with a bottle of Islay's sauce when we went to PA last week (it's a Pittsburgh thing if you don't understand ;) ). We ran EMT from the box back to the workbench and installed two 20A duplex outlets (each on a seperate breaker) there, and dropped two duplex outlets below the box in the front of the garage. We offset those becuase we're going to drop in a 220 outlet beside it down the road, and we're gonna rewire my bootyfab overhead lights too. Did all this in about 2 hours, then went to Hooters for lunch with the rest of the club that showed up to drink and watch us work......

if i ever get to build a garage i want, it would have 2-4x8x3/4 pieces of plexiglass and flurescent lights rigged in a pit in the floor right under my truck, ....so i never have to worry about light when fluids dripping in my face, jammed under my dirty ars truck. i think you would be able to lay right on them with supports built in, and the bottom of your truck would be lit up like the sun....in theory
