Have you thought about trading your Comanche for a new Jeep?

Good point. there are three ways to lower prices, government money (our money), manufacture money, and dealership money. In my tired brain I was lumping them all together. Mostly I was thinking about the one CC member who got a "trade in" on his Comanche a while back. If the dealership is willing to blindly give you a few grand for a 20 year old truck, then they are willing to knock thousands off the price for nothing at all beyond good negotiating skills.

when a dealer gives you inflated trade in money, don't bet on a great purchase price. the front end profit is paying for the back end loss they will take on the inflated trade-in.

My answer to the thread topic.

"When you pry the steering wheel from my cold dead hands".

:D

I will never again spend a dime on a new vehicle. All these bailouts and the cash 4 clunkers program has me pissed off to no end. :fs1:

With Chrysler matching the CARS program, have any of you thought about trading your Comanche on a new Jeep vehicle?

Chrysler makes nothing with a "Jeep" badge that is worth buying.

I hate to say it, but I agree. Most of their models now are such a sad disappointment. I understand they need to keep up with the fuel effeciency standards, but there had to be options other than making FRONT WHEEL DRIVE grocery getters. I actually test drove one of those "patriots" before I got my Subaru, just to give it a chance because I needed a fuel efficient dd   What a joke that thing was. They were offering the "lifetime unlimited mileage warranty" at the time (dunno if they still do it), that was my primary reason...but then I realized to try and claim a blown tranny or motor or something at 200k miles would be nothing more than a headache as they will find some way to not warranty it by saying its "wear and tear" or something stupid.

The Grands have been nothing but problems, LOTS of upkeep and repairs on those at my shop...I will never get a '99 or newer one of those. They finally made the Liberty only half as ugly, but still just not worth it to me. I thought the Commander was cool (aside from its rediculous price), until I found out all of their problems. I still am undecided on that new Wrangler; Its still the only remaining Jeep that is still kind of a Jeep, but definately not like they used to make them

Other arguments aside, I don't like the fact that the computers in new cars also act as "black boxes." They keep a record of how you've been driving, and that can be extracted and used as evidence in an accident. The way I drive that could only help me, but I object on principle. The newest ones are reported to also allow the gummint to track your vehicle. Supposedly OnStar allows them to shut down your vehicle by remote control.

Sorry, I'll stick to driving my own car, thank you. Take good care of the XJs and MJs, and replace an engine every 300,000 miles or so. Let somebody else stimulate the economy.

The moment they decided to drop the AMC/Jeep flagship engine, our beloved Straight 6, I tuned my back on the new Wrangler - and pretty much the future of the Jeep brand... When you have such a good thing going, why change it? How many YEARS was that engine in production - and for what - nothing more than to be replaced by some poo minivan engine?

Sorry. - And you WONDER why I won't buy a new car, much less one from one of the (used to be) big three...

The 4.0 was phased out because the plant that produced it(right over there in Kenosha), needed to completely re-tool to continue production, and they decided it wasn't cost-effective. So they basically tweaked that 3.7 in the KJ and called it a day.

/on topic.

Short answer: Never.

If I ever wanted to own anything but an older AMC style Jeep, I wouldn't have owned 3 XJs and 3(technically) MJs.

Don't think of it as 10k towards a new vehicle. If a dealership is willing to knock down their price for any reason, then they can knock down that price without any reason at all. trade-ins and matched discounts are just scams to make it sound like they're doing something special.

:hmm: whaa? it's all subsidized money. they are not knocking down the price, the govt is giving the mfr $4500 and the mfr is giving the dealer $4500 $9k including the pass-through $4500 from the govt), and the other $1000 is either coming from the mfr or the mfr is making the dealer pony up the $1000.

I may be wrong, but isn't Chrysler operating on bailout funds? Technically wouldn't that make the entire $9000 taxpayer money?

I don't understand people sometimes. :shake:

I have a round trip commute of 80 miles. I couldn't stand watching the miles ticking up on my MJ and was spending a lot more than I needed to on gas. Instead of going out and trading in to get a new car I found a 91 Accord with 268000 miles on it, with a new clutch, new plugs, cap and rotor, and a new exhaust system. No problems with it whatsoever. I did a compression test and it was within 3 psi of a new engine. I paid 1300 for it and still have the MJ for my weekend wheeler/snow driver. I get the fuel savings, pay less for insurance on both vehicles than I would on one new car, don't have a car payment, and the Accord is extremely reliable and is in next to new condition. Why buy new?

I would never EVER trade in my MJ for a new car, especially under the CARS program knowing the fate of my truck. I also will never buy new, there is no reason to. As long as you do your research before buying, used car will be just as reliable as a new car.

I have had mine for too long now to consider trading it in. I still average 22MPG on the highway and it still has been more reliable than some of the newer cars I own. My 87 'manche WAS the last new vehicle I ever bought off a lot. Everything since has been used.

I have 3 vehicles, my only truck is the MJ, and more important to me is the MJ happens to be a JEEP. I have loved Jeeps since my first ride in one 35 years ago. I would never trade me Jeep Truck. Heck I only have 4.5 years to go to get the antiuqe plates. No, No trade for me.

my rusty old mj will be with me for a long...long time. The old girl still averages about 20 mpg back and forth to work even with the added weight of the snow plow mount and bracketry. Plus she earns her keep all winter long( at least when it snows). I have started tearing her down for a front end bushing rebuild.....stoopid death wobble..  ......and a paint job....but she aint goin anywhere.........here she is in all her glory last winter
