Engine Degreaser

Recommended Posts

What's everyone using to clean off the engine??? It's time for me to clean out my engine compartment and I was wondering what was a good product. Any tips on getting the job done are welcome too.

I don't know what is good as far as chemicals or cleaners, as I have not done anything like that in many years, but I can tell you to be very careful to protect your throttle body area--especially the TPS--from water.

but if you want a good cleaner, then try honda bright.

it works amazingly well. :clapping:

First I've ever heard of this.. Googled it and found that Honda Bright is the exact same product as something called S-100. Must be some sort of Motorcycle thing.. :dunno:

I have rebuilt several engines, most of which were really cruddy. I have used pretty much everything that you can buy at AZ, NAPA or Wally World, but the best thing that I have ever used is Easy-Off Oven Cleaner. Just spray it on, let it sit a couple of minutes and hose it off. It works better than Gunk, Simple Green, the purple stuff or anything else that Billy Mays would sell, plus it is cheap. Don't let it sit too long on sensors though.

i assume i have the TB, i PW my engine a couple weeks back, and when i went to start it up it ran like 3 or 4 grand for about fifteen minutes then it would go back to idle, it did that for half the day then it just quit, runs great now. ( i didn't bother covering anything up   ) i got lucky, didn't hurt it to bad.

I have used everything as well, be carefull with easy-off oven cleaner. It is really hard on aluminum and it takes the paint off whatever it touches but it sure does remove the grease.

In the dollar stores around here they sell some stuff called "Awesome" and it is worth the one buck they charge and it works on everything. I just did my engine bay tonight.

I use a product which we simply call 'aircraft soap'. A more proper term would be 'jet-clean' or such. It's terrible stuff, but works awesome for cleaning things without risk of long term corrosion or damage. It also works great for remove carbon buildup on/in parts, just submerge it and wander off for a bit.

I don't know what the availability is like, though. I get it from work, we buy it in 45 gallon drums.
