Carl'sMJ Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 What's everyone using to clean off the engine??? It's time for me to clean out my engine compartment and I was wondering what was a good product. Any tips on getting the job done are welcome too.
BLHTAZ Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I don't know what is good as far as chemicals or cleaners, as I have not done anything like that in many years, but I can tell you to be very careful to protect your throttle body area--especially the TPS--from water.
Pete M Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Engine grime is Jeep's natural rust protection. :D And x2 on keeping water from the throttle body area.
dakal Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 but if you want a good cleaner, then try honda bright. it works amazingly well. :clapping:
Hawk Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I use the purple stuff that comes in a gallon like anti-freeze and I cut it 50% with water. Spray it on and powerwash it off, it's great.
chicofuentes0224 Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I got my engine hot and sprayed it down with brake cleaner.Got really clean, and only had to replace all my sensors and plastic hoses and rubber gromets.................................for the second time :wall:
jtdesigns Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 but if you want a good cleaner, then try honda bright. it works amazingly well. :clapping: First I've ever heard of this.. Googled it and found that Honda Bright is the exact same product as something called S-100. Must be some sort of Motorcycle thing.. :dunno:
dakal Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 yah it is. a friend of mine who rides bikes told me about it. doesn't harm any electricals.
88XJSport Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 Ive heard purple power is the best. Ive never tried it though.
HellCreek Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I have rebuilt several engines, most of which were really cruddy. I have used pretty much everything that you can buy at AZ, NAPA or Wally World, but the best thing that I have ever used is Easy-Off Oven Cleaner. Just spray it on, let it sit a couple of minutes and hose it off. It works better than Gunk, Simple Green, the purple stuff or anything else that Billy Mays would sell, plus it is cheap. Don't let it sit too long on sensors though.
Lenard Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 but I can tell you to be very careful to protect your throttle body area--especially the TPS--from water. i assume i have the TB, i PW my engine a couple weeks back, and when i went to start it up it ran like 3 or 4 grand for about fifteen minutes then it would go back to idle, it did that for half the day then it just quit, runs great now. ( i didn't bother covering anything up   ) i got lucky, didn't hurt it to bad.
Ibby Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Castrol Super Clean kicks @$$. I don't know what it's like on rubber and electrical stuff though. I also like Marine Clean from POR 15. Works really well.
trader ray Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 I have used everything as well, be carefull with easy-off oven cleaner. It is really hard on aluminum and it takes the paint off whatever it touches but it sure does remove the grease. In the dollar stores around here they sell some stuff called "Awesome" and it is worth the one buck they charge and it works on everything. I just did my engine bay tonight.
DirtyComanche Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 I use a product which we simply call 'aircraft soap'. A more proper term would be 'jet-clean' or such. It's terrible stuff, but works awesome for cleaning things without risk of long term corrosion or damage. It also works great for remove carbon buildup on/in parts, just submerge it and wander off for a bit. I don't know what the availability is like, though. I get it from work, we buy it in 45 gallon drums.
Sir Sam Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 brake cleaner, pregamed with kerosine, and finished off with simple green.
Carl'sMJ Posted May 10, 2009 Author Posted May 10, 2009 What about mineral spirits??? I heard of it being used to clean aircraft engines. I also have heard of using dishwashing detergent. Any input?
OSHAGNASTY Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 i love purple stuff but it does eat away oils you do not want it too bearings and stuff like that, dirtbike shops sell bike wash that won't eat away stuff. i still use purple stuff
