Had a customer bring in their 06 Grand Cherokee the other day, wouldnt start, the whole thing covered in carolina red mud, open the hood, and the whole hemi has an inch of red mud all over it. Well, I hook up the jump box, get it running and notice the battey light on in the dash... its not charging. I get my flashlight out, move the air ducts and look at the alternator which is packed pull of mud and must have burned or ground down the inner working of it. We order them a new alt and tell them there will be a charge to hose this thing off so we can work on it. I get the alt replaced and everything is working so I pull it out and park it thinking I was done with it and these people could go back to Raliegh where they came from. I noted on the repair order that because of the mud intrusion, they could have other problems pop up. The customer comes in today to get it after driving for an hour and a half, turn the key and the starter just spins freely! Not engaging! And somehow its my fault! Its my fault they buried their soccer mom unmodified hemi Jeep in the mud at the Uwharrie state park! So tommorow I get to replace the starter on it, still with an inch of mud covering all of its underpinnings. I can't wait! (note the sarcasm) I just hope nothing else goes wrong with it till after they leave, because somethingelse will go wrong with it. Those new Cherokees may be trail rated, but its not mud bog rated. Its not bury the hood and front end in the swamp rated. It not STUPID rated!!! Freaking preppy a-holes! soapbox.gif

IF YOU WANT A TRAIL JEEP.... BUILD ONE!!!!!!!!

Look at the bigger picture. Take an extra 1/2 hour to do the work (you know since it was muddy, tough to get to and so on). Then at least you (or your company) is getting compensated for the ahole attack.

Better yet, don't take an extra half hour but SAY you did. :clapping:

Oh, one more thing. don't forget to check the flux capacitor while you have it opened up. They don't tolerate the mud.

Flat rate work (way most mechanics get paid) prevents this from happening. But if he does the work faster than the paid time, that he gets more money that the amount of time actually put in.

Thanks for the support guys, replaced the started and hoped for the best. They left hopefully never to be heard from again, I'm just waiting for them to complain about the exhast leak it had! :brows: :brows: :brows:

Flat rate sucks when it comes to muddy ice covered or rusty vehicles. I always included a time and material charge to cover my time. I was in a union dealership so if they didn't sell the cleanup but needed it done I could choose to be paid by the hour per union rules. I always liked union shops. I was a Mopar Master Tech for 15 years so I know what you mean. I hated customers like that.

I had some great customers that wheeled. They would clean there rig the best they could and would always tip me for a job well done. They would also want it cleaned underneath and would pay 5 tenths for the clean-up. I always totally cleaned it and dried it with a blowgun. I was also tipped for that. They never tipped less then $20.00 and bought donuts for my birthday and even gave me Christmas presents. They also tipped the service manager about $20.00 every visit. We overlooked the 35" tires and lift that I installed at my house. I put a supercharger on it and replaced the engine at 95,000 miles because the service contract was almost over.

If the customer takes care of the right people it makes a difference.
