Picked-up the axles...let me know what you think

Recommended Posts

Yes, those gears can be swapped in to your axle. The cost is going to vary as I have seen charges range from $200 - $600. Using used gears will normally cost more as most professional places will not want to do that and they will charge more for it and give no warranty.

I say get your money back and put it toward a set of new gears, carriers and install kits.

Yeah Pat! Possibly a rube, but not a yuppie.

I acknowledge that I should have taken a better look at the axle when I picked it up, but I really didn't know any better. And that is the seller's ONLY fall-back position.

If he won't budge on a return, perhaps I can swap for a better axle...and this time I know what to look for.

It takes one to know one...and Mr Rob is NO yuppie...

Pat, How do you define "yuppie"?

good luck with the axles Rob!

So I'm researching "yuppie" on the net today and a good picture popped up.

This poor yuppie has nothing going for him besides the fact he has two beautiful kids. And did you guys notice the horrible inflamation from the blowfish attack in Georgia? Poor guy

On to more important issues. Rob, just walk into the shop. Tell that guy you actually looked at the axle when you got home and realized everything was wrong with it. Make sure you sound real intelligent and mention everything everyone told you on here.

Here's my best yuppie impersonation

Rob: "Dude, I actually looked at the axle when I got home and it's for sure fubared. Did you even take a look at it before you sold it to me?"

Guy: "Listen yuppie, you bought it, it's yours."

Rob: "Seriously maan. This thing is shot. I brought it back just to show you I'm not blind, dumb, or stupid. The only thing this is good for is a lawn ornament and my yuppie wife only likes those little bloody knomes. Let's make a deal. You're a Reputable Jeep Shop, right? Help me get this rusty piece of $#!& off my bed, call the scrap guy and see how much he'll give you for it. Then schedule an appointment and drop some new gears in my D30 to match my rear axle. You've already got $250 from me and I'll throw in another $120 (or some amount you find fair). You still get paid, I get the gears I want, and my pain in the @$$ wife has more room for those stupid little knomes. What do you say?"

Guy: "I could say go @#$% yourself. But the truth is I'll take your deal because not only am I going to keep your $250 but I'll make a little extra cash on the job and I still get to sell that POS axle to someone who's not part of the Comanche Club. That and I know you'll give out my number on the net and Chico and Wahoo will call me 134 times a day to tell me how much of an a$$hole I am until I finally give in and accept your deal. So why put up with the hassle. Drop the axle off out back and bring your truck back in a week and we'll put those new gears in for you."

Rob: "Dude, that's cool. Would you like me to bring you back a Latte when I come back next week?"

Guy: "That would be swell!"

lol guys. my day has been made by the previous post.

I'm not saying rob's a yuppie. I just used the term to point out that he didnt know what to look for, and the shop obviously should have known better and should have told him the truth rather than lie.

you can use the fact that the axle could literally kill you if any of the rusty-@$$ mounts fail as well.

And the story ends...

I spoke to the guy today and he will take back the axle for a full refund. Thanks for everyone's input. I've learned a valuable lesson and will be much more careful next time.

Now, I still want 4.10 gears before winter sets in. The search continues!

I asked for my money back first and if he resisted I was going to ask him for a different (better) axle or the gear swap.

At this point, I think I'd prefer the Dana 44 in the rear and not too sure that I trust him.

Sorry I didnt get back sooner rob. Me and a friend actually buy alot of small parts for our Mjs from them. I thought he might give you the refund as I have never had any problems with them. They even tape letters to all there shipped packages asking to let them know if there is any problems and they will fix it. I was actually there on Friday and have to go back this week.

if you have a local jeep club, call in a favor...I guarantee someone knows how to do gears and has the ability to.

buy a gear set, and have them install it. that would cost less than $250 and you'd be all set to go with your current axle.

...I may part ways with my dana 44 rear with 4.09's soon, and the dana 30 disconnect front with 4.11's. it's possible that I've found some fullsize axles with 4.88 gears :D
