You people are killing me I've only seen like 5 or 6 MJ's in my whole life, (well since I realized they existed), and it sounds like some of you are stockpiling them for a rainy day! I had to trade a fairly decent YJ for mine, and mine had rotted floors, no brakes and needs quite a bit more then that before it will be road worthy! Arrrrgggghhhhhhhhh! I do hate you! ;) But seriously, Good luck with it.

Don't hate Jeep. Hate the JERKS at DODGE CHRYSLER who took over the Jeep brand. First thing they did was stop the production of Jeep trucks. Seems they didn't want jeep trucks cutting into the sales of thier Dodge pick ups. I realy hate Dodge! stop making jeep trucks, but why??? every jeep truck sold, was still $$ in thier pocket. The reason why is there was a better profit margin selling crappy dodge dakotas instead of the J and MJ series. Ok, on that note why didn't Dodge stop making SUV's, after all, every Durango they sell is cutting into jeeps market share of SUV's?? Dodge sucks thats why. :headpop: Lets face it, Jeep was a pretty good company under  AMC, Kaiser and  Willys. Dodge would have gone bankrupt had the governement not bailed them out with massive contracts back in the 70's and 80's. BEST thing that could happen now would be for Jeep to become a stand alone company, and cut back on the number of models they make. First just scrap the entire Jeep line up, excluding the wrangler and grand cherokee. there is no point in trying to build many different SUV's to please the market. Go for the "nitch" market. They should make a Wrangler model, with three options, a tough little 4wheeler like the rubicon, a standard 4wheeler like the TJ, and a pickup type model like the scrambler. This wouldn't be so hard. Now make a midsize Jeep, like the XJ, and make a pickup version of it too. Granted by just having a few models, they will be letting the other auto manufactures capture other segments of the market, (like the behemoth SUV, and the OVERLY LARGE pick ups. but that would be ok, as they would have less expense of designing and producing and marketing them. Jeep needs to concentrate on makeing REAL sport utility vehicles, ones that ARE strong and durable. If they don't do this, it's just a matter of time before they aren't considered the standard setters of off road vehicles. Once Jeep looses the mystique of being the best 4x4 vehicles,,, who is gonna buy them, at the pricesthey ask? Jeep needs to concentrate on this nitch market, and not the over all market share. Man do I hate DODGE/Chrysler.

Chrysler no longer owns Jeep? Since when did this good fortune happen? I though dalmier/benz sold off Chrylsler/dodge/jeep?

Ok, I'll prolly hear some flak about this one, but I never use tow straps. I use CHAINS, and I have a small cable puller/come along/hand winch. In the past I have had friends use the straps, sometimes they held up, other times they snapped. When a Chain snaps, you just slap a bolt through the links, and bingo your back in business. When a strap snapps, throw it out and buy another! I have personally snapped about 5 chains in my days off roading. I have never damaged anything but the roof of my YJ, when they snapped. But that was before I got the REAL chain. Now that I have a heavy duty chain, :brows: The metal in this chain is almost 1/2 inch thick, each link is about 2.5 inches long and about 1 inch wide. It's a strong chain, last winter I came across a Toyota Tacoma who managed to get himself stuck in a snow bank,(he didn't know how to plow). "No worries" says I, as I pull out my tow chain, "this little wrangler will pull you out" I tell him. Well this guy had himself so buried in the snow bank, that I couldn't pull him out, I had to Yank him out, on the fifth "yank" the chain tore right through his rear frame, grabbed his bumper and ripped the bumper halfway off, but on that last yank it pulled him free enough to get out the rest on his own power. I felt bad that I tore his little pick up appart, but he was happy to be out of the snow bank and didn't care. On the back of my wrangler, I have two mounting brackets from when I had a rear tube bumper, (smittybuilt),thats where I hooked the chain to, one bracket was bent a little and it is 1/2 steel. On that same day, a friend of mine called and told me he got stuck in some guys driveway, and could I come pull him out. Now this guy was in a Dodge 2500, with an 8' plow on it. the driveway was so steep, he couldn't back up it. My chain, is only about 15' long and wouldn't reach his truck, with me staying up on the level road, no worries, he had a 30' stretch and snatch strap. Well it should have been called a stretch and snap strap, because thats what it did, and no I didn't "yank" him, a nice slow steady 4low pull, and the thing snapped. I couldn't believe it, as his truck wasn't stuck on anything, he simply couldn't get enough traction to make it back out the driveway, he said the strap was old and that was prolly why it broke. Well I hooked my hand winch to my chain and was able to get enough distance to reach his truck, then sort of 'matter of fact' pulled him right out. I dunno, those $30, hand winches realy ain't that strong, but it worked better then the tow strap. I know the straps are safer, because when they snap, there is no metal whipping through the air to smash your head, hands, face or radiator, windshield, or headlights But spend some money on a serious chain, thats made in AMERICA and made of QUALITY metal, it won't snap, the truck will bend/rip/break first. Oh I forgot to mention, I've been using thias chain for close to 8 years now, pulling bolders around in my yard, yanking out tree stumps, etc, etc. The chains I had break wheren't heavy duty, and everyone that snapped whipped right up and over my wrangler, (one or two took a few pieces outa the roof). Thats my two cents, on the issue. Ok now everyone can tell me how foolish I am and how lucky I've been. ;)

I ran my YJ, last winter, with BFG All Terrain tires on the front and BFG Mud Terrains on the rear, ( I snowplow some pretty steep driveways). I've no complaints, although I think the all terrains are pretty equal in the snow, and much better on pavement I like the Mud terrains in the snow, and off road, but on hard pavement, they made me nervous, every turn I took, made me feel like I was about to fishtail all over the place, (never did, but sure felt like it). I like BFG tires, in general, I just haven't had any bad thing with them, (unlike firestones). I've got BFG all terrains on my wife's cherokee, and they are just a great all arround tire. Once My Comanche is on the road, I'll put BFG all terrains on it, the same size as my YJ's, so if I ever need some agressive off road tread, I'll just slap the Mud Terrains on it, (nice thing that my YJ rimsand MJ rims are interchangeable). :brows:

Adding an electric fan
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to 90PioSport99's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I picked up an electric one at the JY, it has the brackets needed to mount it right on the radiator. My MJ isn't wired for it, so I'm just goin to wire it into one of the toggle switches on the dashboard. I aquired some of the toggle switches from an old XJ at the junkyard, and will wire it to the rear windshiled wiper motor switch. I'll wire it through the ignition so it will only run when the motor is running, (so I don't leave it on by accident and drain the battery). I don't plan on wiring it through the relay(s), but I have the full gauge package and will be able to see when my motor is running hot. -
I've got a used set, a little bit rusted, but should work fine. You'll just need to get the nuts and bolts to install them. I'll let ya have them, for $15 plus shipping. Let me know, John

Welcome to the Club. I do believe your English needs some practice. Please don't get me wrong, seems your English is better then my Spanish. Perhaps, we can help you with questions about your Truck, and also help you with your English. First one would say, I live in Argentina, Not appear to live. If what you are trying to ask is if your truck can handle 33's, it depends on the gear ratio in the axles. The gear ratio in the Axles are different on these trucks, one needs to actualy look at the Axle, there should be a tag on there somewhere that tells what the gear ratio is. Hope that helps some, good luck

Wiring Questions
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to rubiconron's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The ground for the tail lights in the trucks bed is just inside of the driverside tail light. If the passenger side isn't functioning correctly, and you swaped out the flasher and still have a problem, check the wiringin the trucks bed, the wires run to the drivers side tail light, then accross the back/under the bed to the passenger side. Could be the wire is Fubard in this area. Good luck, let us know what fixed it when ya figure it out. -
What a Little Angel she is! Congratulations!

Yeah Scouts were a great time for me. My dad was the Scout master for many years. He NEVER presured me to advance in rank. I never made it past tenderfoot, inspite of getting many merit badges, I did what I wanted and didn't worry about the required ones to advance. My Dad thought that Camping/hiking and fresh air were more important then the ranks. I was a Counselor at a Camp in the Adorondaks for a summer, and then again at a camp in NJ for a summer. Thoses were some of the best times ! My oldest son is 8yrs, once he is old enough to join the boyscouts, I plan to rejoin as an assistant SM or such, and get him involved.

Oh I've had so many close calls it's hard remember, (260,000 miles). I do remember one during a Blizzard I think it was 1994? anyhow I was driving back to Manhattan from PA, on RT 80. Visibility was VERY POOR. So bad that even a big Highway plow truck had actualy driven off the road and gotten stuck. Anyhow musta been about a good foot of snow covering the road, and me being young and stupid. ;) I was tooling along at about 40-45mph, when all of the sudden there is this Fullsize custom Van just stopped, sitting there with his hazards on. ( I geuss since he couldn't see the road he didn't know if he was in a lane or on the sholder), and to be honest I wasn't even sure If I was either. Anyhow I had just enough time to throw the steering wheel hard left. Missed him by inches and proceeded to slide back and forth, (don't ask me why I didn't spin into a 360), clear off the road and down a 20-30 foot embankment. Luckily I didn't roll it, (don't ask me how!?) I couldn't make it back up the embankment though, so I had to drive along in the center median for awhile before I could get back up onto the highway. Once I got back on the interstate, I drove a little slower. Hehe, Then there was the othertime I sunk my YJ in a river. but that realy wasn't a close call, that was more of a wipe out, and stupidity. Jeep ended up being Ok, once we got an old Farmall tractor to pull it out. I made the mistake of not flushing out the transmission/transfercase and rears. So the water that entered them eventualy caused me to blow the rear, and transmission. Oh well live and learn,,,, or more aptly put Play and Pay!

Squeezin pony's out of a 2.5
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to SlimFisher's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I've got a 2.5 in my 1991 YJ, with a manual 5sp. I put in one of those throttlebody spacers, (only cost $20.00), while it slightly helped my gass mileage, I didn't notice much of a difference with top end speed, or low end torque. I must say though, In the winter I slap 235/70 r15 BF goodrich all terrains. In the summer I put on 225/70 r15s, (whatever brand I get a deal on currently kelly navigators), I also have a set of 235/70/ r15 BF Goodrich Mud terrain tires that I through on every now and again. With the larger tires, the old YJ has to work REALY hard to get up to about 75/80mph on the interstate, and thats about as fast as I can get it rolling. But with the smaller tires, I have no problem doing 85-90, and it feels like it still has some more to give. I'm sure the tread pattern plays a factor in this too. Just something to keep in mind, If you put bigger tires, you need more power/torque from the motor, or better gearing. But if you don't mind having standard tires, go with a smaller tire, like a 215 or 205. Won't look as cool, but you will notice the difference. -
Philmont scout ranch, is to scouts, the most challenging of all scout camps. I have been in many Scout camps in the Northeast. Some of these camps are Truely adventure camps, where you could have any number of things happen, from bears, wildfires, etc, etc, This 'accident' doesn't seem to me to be "Out of the Norm' for Boyscouts, who are serious adventurers. I'm glad to hear that no one was hurt, and I hope a speedy recovery for those who were injured.

ALSO check the wire harness inside the cab, right down where the parking break pedal is. The wires for fuel pump run through there. It is a Fairly common problem to have a short or bad connection in this area. Also check the wires at the gastank itself, could very well be that one of them is bad or loose. Good luck

I "lost it" on Route 78 in New Jersey, years ago in my CJ8. It was during a heavy snow storm, about 6 inches had already fallen. I was in the slow lanes when I came up on a few 18 wheelers, after a few minutes of thier road spray on my windshield, I changed lanes and passed them. Well that slow lane had a couple of 'rutts' in the snow from all the trucks/cars that were out in that weather. But the other lanes had a nice coating of the slippery white stuff. Well after I passed all the 18 wheelers, (musta been about 6 of them), I decided to get back into the slow lane where those "rutts" would get me back intouch with some pavement. When the passenger front tire got into the first rutt it grabbed on the pavement and sent me spinning, I'm not sure how many 360s I did, (at 45-55 MPH), but everytime I was totaly basackwards All I saw were the headlights of the lead Truck bearing down on me. Luckily my momentum carried me right off the road and onto the embankment. All I have to say is Thank goodness for gaurdian angles  there was definately one looking out for me that night!

Welcome to the comancheclub! People are very cool and helpful here, so don't be afraid to ask questions, even the STUPID ones, (we all ask a few of those anyhow). And lets see some pictures!

I saw the same thing happen to a GEO Tracker on Nantucket Island, back in 1993. Only thing though was it ended up sitting overnight, and let me tell ya the surf from the ocean, (even on the harbor side), had that little tracker sunk right up to the windshield. It's amazing how quick a little wave action and some sand can suck you in. On a similar note ALWAYS airdown your tires when driving in the sand. Further don't go to fast, as the centrificul force will counter the effect of lowering the air presure, (TRUST ME I KNOW). Hope you get away with minimal repairs, good luck.

You mention a Crack that didn't show in the photos. If the ceramic on the plug is cracked, then the plug won't cool properly, which might explain this. Try a new plug and see what happens. If a new plug gets fubard too, then you know it's something besides the plug!

I'd be one of those skeptical types  But, I keep my Jeeps pretty much stock anyhow. Hopefully I'll get arround to throwing in some Roughcounty add a leafs in the rear of my YJ. I bought a whole set (front and rears), couple years back when I added the meyers plow. I put the fronts in right away to help with the added weight, but never made the time to do the rears. If I ever get this MJ on the road!

My 1987 Comanche Pioneer
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to JeeperjohnfromPA's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Dropped in new brake lines from the front booster to the rear proportioning valve, Installed new brake cylinders in the rear, new brake shoes, and new brake drums. I need the adjuster for the drivers side rear, It's just rusted solid. I'll check the autoparts store tommorow. I'll bleed them once I get that adjuster. Still need to do some rust control and painting under the bed before I connect all the parking brake cables together and re-attach that bracket that holds where they all meet. But progress is being made. I wish My digital camera didn't grow legs, would be nice to post a few pictures of my progress. Maybe I use real film and scan them in. ;) -

Found this on BestOf Craigslist- Dear Honda Owners
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to Kenosha Warrior's topic in The Pub
One day, I was on my way home from the local grocery store. In front of me was some kid in a early 90s mustage 5.0. The kid was just acting retarted at the light, like he wanted to jump the light or something which I realy would have ignored, except he did it like 6-7 times before the light changed, hell he's just ridning his clutch :thwak: That combined with the stupid stickers he had all over the back window just sort of, well, just pushed some sorta button in me. Ok, so I'm in my wife's Cherokee, it's a 2001 limited, 4.0 with an automatic. So for some reason I couldn't control myself. when the light changed the kid took off, (well as best as his beat on old mustange could take off), so I'm on his tail way to close to be considered 'safe' following distance. He sees me and now trys to 'leave me in the dust', the whole time we are going down this windy little country road. the speed limit was 30 and we are flying at almost double that. I know I'm retarded too, for driving like that. but the whole three miles of back road, I'm on his tail way to close to be considered 'safe' following distance. The whole time this Kid is all over the road trying to "bank" his turns, Meantime I'm hardly leaving my lane, and on his tail way to close to be considered 'safe' following distance. We come to a stop sign, and both make the same turn, and again he takes off. And I'm on his tail way to close to be considered 'safe' following distance. He then makes a left turn shortly down the road and I go straight, about 100 yards up the road I pull in at the local beer distributor/deli As I'm walking into the beer distributor, I see the mustange pull in the parking lot. The kid parked and went into the attached convience store, he didn't even realize It was me in the lot, But there could be no mistake as to all those stupid decals and stickers on his beat old mustange. Now where he made that turn and I went straight, he would of had to drive quite a bit before he got to any houses or anything, so he must of just turned hoping I'd go straight, and then turned arround after I passed. He didn't figure on me being at the deli/beer distributor. So I put my beer in the cherokee, chuckled to myself and drove the rest of the way home at a more rational speed. To be fair to the Kid though, you could tell his Mustange was just beat, like beat on from doing burnouts and riding the clutch and other STUPIDITY. Now if I was in my Wrangler with the 2.5L and it's 260,000 miles, it would have been a fair race. :brows:
