One of best improvements for a 4 cyl. would be to replace the OEM type of spark plug wires with some high performance ones. Preferably a set with less than 1,000 ohms of resistance (per foot). You might also consider a new coil (performance one if available) along with new spark plugs. I've done wires plugs cap and rotor, and the truck had a new coil when I got it, so I avoided that. I did find a noticeable difference after the ignition upgrade, but I'm always comparing it to my 4.3 vortec blazer, which isn't really fair to the ole girl. The blazer sure seems to have the balls though

I know about speedo gears, unfortunately my speedo had never worked, so I'm not too concerned about it. Sometimes it would be nice to know how fast I'm going, especially when I'm the only guy on the road. For now I just judge by gear and engine sound. If it sounds like I'm going fast, I must be really gunnin it.

you need yerself one-a-them fancy bolt pullers I think. I finally got around to swapping mine, and it was so loose all it needed was a bit of wiggle, and a hammer. I went with a 12" black and red leather wheel. I fit it up with a grant adapter + a custom one I had fab'd out of a hunk of stainless steel + a quick release. Looks great, but now I need a tilt column so it doesn't feel like I'm driving a "Sports Bus"

Project Hella Ugly update, Well this morning crusin' along the hi-way in 98deg weather my rad finally decided it couldn't take anymore. It split right under the top tank. Thankfully traffic wasn't too bad today. I was able to get out of the fast lane and move over 6 more to the next ramp before the engine conked out from the carb getting wet. Now I got a new all aluminum rad. The rad shop guy said that this rad would be fine to run in front of a 350. Looks great too.

I have 30x9.5's on for the summer, and in the winter I use 225/75's. When I bought the truck it had 195's on it. I actually thought it was driving much better with larger tires. Though I wouldn't go any bigger with my current setup.

Thanks Guys. Gearing sounds like the way to go. My only concern is that I sit in hi-way traffic and roll in first for a good part of my drive every day. It's an 87 AX5 2wd. Long term plans are to make it into a tow rig for my boat by dropping in an Small block, gm 5 or 6 speed tranny and probably an explorer rear end. Thats going to wait a while though, so I was looking for budget bolt on options. Has anyone heard or seen these ebay inline turbo's. It looks like an electric turbine in some conduit that you just install with an open air filter in front. I'm pretty skeptical that they do much at all. Here is an example. I'm getting kinda tired of my AMC 2.5's lack of power, but I like the fuel economy. It's a low click motor, and still runs well. I don't think there are any blow by problems although it does need a valve cover gasket. What can I do to get some more power out of it?

My name inspiration came from Mitch's comment. Anyway, time for an update. Lots has happened in the past few months with the ole MJ. Nothing that I had planned either, but It's probably for the best. This truck is my daily driver, and I put around 1000 km a week on it. The wear and tear has taken it's toll. In the past 3 months I have replaced the clutch and clutch master, starter, battery, fuel pump, plugs, wires, cap rotor, rear shocks, steering wheel (finally), tape deck, speakers, wheels and tires. I have new parts to do the entire front end waiting to get installed. I'm still on the lookout for a set of suitable bucket seats, and bumpers. In the next month or so it will be heading to the paint shop for derustification, and repainting. I think I'm sticking with red, but have been tempted to go black, just cause I love black trucks. Currently the guage cluster is dead. I fill up the tank every other day just to be sure I don't run out of gas. Probably a fuse, but I did smell some kind of burning a couple weeks ago. All the warning lights and shift lights are also dead. The speedo never really worked. It moves, but not past 60. So I'm also hunting for a metric cluster with cable driven speedo. I'll post some new pic's soon.

I think they look pretty good, but I can completely understand the trouble with trying to keep them clean. I have Black BBs Mesh wheels on my blazer, and they look like crap now cause I can't invest the 2hrs every car wash to shine them up. The ion's are easy, just a good wipe with the sponge, and a bit of polish and their back to new.

I really suck at keeping my threads updated. So anyway here is an overdue update. I finally decided on a set of wheels. 2 actually. Set one are 15x8 ION's with 30x9.5 daytons. The tires only had about 5k on them and still had hairs. Set two are gold mesh from a cherokee limited. There not in the best shape, but the price was right and I got them for winter so I'm not too concerned. TireRack also has a clearance sale on now. They were my next choice. Here is the link

Yea, they would do the trick too if I could find them. I haven't been to the wreckers yet, cause it's still cold here. But their on the possibilities list. Ford also put some nice turbines on the early 70's Continentals too.

Sure, their cheap, and I want to keep the truck looking vintage. It's a street truck and my DD. I've been looking wheels like these: and these: Both of which I think would look great, but I can not bring myself to pay more for wheels than I did for the truck.

These are the rims I was thinking of. I'm looking for something from the late 70's to late 80's. There is no caps with them, but they were only used for a year then stored so their in pretty good shape. I thought I might be able to find a center cap that just covers the hub and leave the lugs exposed. They are 15X7's

The wheels are setup for tapered lugs, as are my factory steel wheels.

What are the chances of these wheels fitting a 2wd MJ? I know the pattern is 5X4-1/2 and their 15X7's but I'm not sure about the offset.
