I had strange 'issues' like that with my YJ 2.5 once apon a time. turned out was a pinched wire going to the coil. It was wierd, as it worked fine 87.9% of the time. so I'd double check that. A bad wire to one of your fuel injectors should make the motor run like sh*t, but it should still start. double check the line running into the coil, in particular the connector that attaches to it. Thats where mine went bad, took me almost a whole year before I tracked it down.

Little yellow AMC box???
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to rockhardzj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes indeed those are for the cruise control, they mount to the inside of the dashpanel. -
I'll go for a hat, if they have an adjustable strap, 8) Personaly I can't stand the type with elastic strap

Go look at it for sure! :brows: Take Wildmans advice, even with a little welding needed for some floor repair or frame repair, it would still be a good deal!

This is my first Comanche!!
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to ridenlow12's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Thats not a maroon dash, it's Cordovan. I know because I've got the same color on my 87. I recently aquired a bench seat out of an 86, and it is maroon, believe it or not there is a difference! The Cordovan color is 'browner' then the Maroon, and the maroon appears 'redder' then the cordovan. Just FYI, ;) Nice Rig though! :D And think safety all the time, not just with jack stands, but where eye protection when grinding/cutting/welding etc,etc You only get one set of eyes! -

Hey Thanks for the link to the VIN decoder, checked it out, it came up correct for all the jeeps I entered, 1991 YJ, 2001 XJ, and 87 MJ. ;)

OK, PM'd it too ya Sorry for any confusion.

Just one of the many uses for a Jeep vehicle! :brows: I use my old YJ to do that type of stuff all the time. I've even dragged a few Bolders arround. Thinking about it used to do that stuff with the old Scrambler too!

That is awesome! For sitting arround looks like the body is in pretty good shape. If you don't buy it I will track you down and beat you! Not sure though what year it is from the pictures, the dash board and interior of the door look a little different then I rember my friends old 63 truck, but alzhiemers could be setting in a little early on me. Also as I recall it was either 1962 or 1963 that they finaly put a one piece windshield in these. Maybe the windshield was replaced at some point? Main problems with these old Willys is they rot our in the cab floor if the cab and rockers are solid, you'ld be foolish to pass it by. Also I believe that when Kaiser started making the Gladiators, you could purchase one with what was know as the Thrift side bed, which is what is on that one. so if you needed a new bed, you might keep that in mind. Those Thriftside beds are real easy to work on though. I notice that you are missing the 4wheeldrive emblem from the hood. I might be able to help you out with that, My buddy still has his 63, but he has some grand scheme of restoring it someday. But I know for a fact that he has some spare parts arround, let me see what he might be willing to part with. As for the PTO whinch let me check the service manual I have on the old gladiators, maybe they mention something,, -
Rear Proportioning Valve Comments
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm going back there this Friday. I hope the comanche is still there . I'll double check which axle it had, looked like what was in mine, but I realy didn't look to closely. -
Rear Proportioning Valve Comments
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
OK here is some light shed on this, No answers, just some info. I was at a junkyard the otherday, they had a 1986 MJ in there, but it was a 2wd model, not a 4x4 like mine. Anyhow it had the little rod that connects the axle to the brake proportioning valve. Now the 87 MJ in my driveway is missing that little part, so I grabbed it. As I was removing it, I thought that the part where it hooks up to the axle looked different then what was on mine, so I grabbed that too. THEY ARE DIFFERENT. The little part that mounts on the axle is different, and this would throw everything outa wack. I'll get some pictures up here as soon as I can figure out where my old digital camera is. -

Hey Colton, I know what your feeling. Check out the picture I just posted in the PUB under pictures of my old jeeps. GO FOR IT DUDE! -
Ok someone mentioned buying an old Willys pick up truck. Reminded me that an Old Willys Pickup truck is what got me hooked on jeeps way back when,,,,, So here are a couple of pictures of my budies old 1963 Pick up. These pictures were taken witnh black and white film, back in the late 70s. This was the first vehicle I ever went four wheeling in. Enjoy

Ok well since you mentioned it here it is a scan of the page with the front mounted winch. :brows:

Pilot Bearing Removal Problems
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to Keats's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
LOL Just leave it in! My TJ still has the original one from the factory it's got 260,000 miles now, I suppose the pilot bearing is making a bit of noise, but with all the other noises it just helps me to have a nice 'harmonic blend' -

Well if you want an old truck thats alot like a CJ/scrambler, you've made the correct pick! Building up your credit with a small loan dosen't hurt either. I had a 1981 CJ8 Scrambler, and I can tell you that the dashboard instruments were almost identical to what was in the 1963 Willys pickup truck! Tis a very easy design to work with, but a truck that old is likely to have plenty of bolts/nuts that rae rusted stuck! Your Young so you have more time then most so GO FOR IT! Offer the guy like $2000 he'll prolly jump at it. OH yeah forgot to say, I hope it's got the 6 cylinder in it. your gonna want the power, the 4 is just under powered for that vehicle In My opinion. Good luck! -
Hard starting except with starting fluid.
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to jpfrogger's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I agree, sounds to me like a fuel issue too. Check the fuel regulator and the vacum lines to it and any to the throttlebody. Also check the connectors/wiring inside the cab, look near where the brake pedal is. The wires that run back along the inside of the drivers door/floor go to the back of the truck, so these wires include the ones that go to the gas tank. lots of people have reported having 'issues' with the wires in this area. -

My two cents echos some of the others. Depends on how much ya want it. My Friend's father had a 1963 Willies Pickup truck, that he bought new, for his business. his son sorta took it over when the old man got a chevy in the 70's So I've ridden in one ALOT. We used to 4wheel the hell outa that thing back in the 70s, hell I've got a photo arround here somewhere, I'll have to find it and scann it. They are Realy cool trucks that are head turners, and great conversation items. But not daily drivers. If you are gonna make it a project truck and "hop it up" well then , prolly cost ya some $$$, and most likely alot of time. Is it realy worth it to go into debt, with the prospect of having to spend more $$ and time, before you see any real return for your investment? Thats something you'll have to weigh. -
I recently aquired a Jeep Trucks Sales Brochure from 1987.It shows the various trim packages, options and color schemes. Here are a couple scanns from it. If you want to see more let me know,,, Hope you all find it useful.

My 1987 Comanche Pioneer
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to JeeperjohnfromPA's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
went to the junkyard the otherday. Found an 86 Comanche, 2wheeldrive, colum shift. Hell the thing was in better condition then my MJ. The bench seat was in it and was MINT, I mean PERFECT! so I grabbed it. hope I can make it work with the floor shift. I grabbed the headliner too, it was saggy but not ripped to hell like mine. I picked up two of those little interior lights that go behind the seat on the pillar. Got a bunch of little odds and ends that I needed too. I woulda had a few other things if I had the right tools. namely front tow hook mounts. Gotta get back there soon, and try to get the rear leaf springs outa that MJ I did manage to get some work done on my MJ, over the past couple of days. The main patch in the passengers floor is pretty well all welded in. I also Fixed one of the gas tank straps, (welded a piece to reinforce it). Painted the Gas tank with Rustoleum. POR15 the gas tank straps, and the parking brake mount. Cut and bent a few new pieces of sheet metal for the driverside floor repair (Cut away some cancer/rust from that area too). Gonna have to get inside the rocker with some POR15 before I weld I hit the some of the bed mount bolts with some PB breaker cause I'm gonna take the bed of soon -
POR15 isn't bad stuff. The real trick though, in my opinion, is prepping the metal/rust correctly. I can't speak highly enough of POR15's Marine Clean. The Marine clean works just great! I purchased Marine clean, Metal ready and POR 15. I suggest using the three step process, Marine clean, Metal ready and then POR15. I also found some stuff at the Auto parts store, called the RIGHT STUFF, it's cheaper then the Metal ready and is virtualy the same thing. Using a metal prep like Metal reay or Right stuff realy makes the por15 adhear well. Obviously follow the instructions and wire brush wire wheel etc before you apply anything.

Update - Chrysler Parts Direct
JeeperjohnfromPA replied to Wildman's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It's sad when you go to the local JEEP dealer and try to order brake cables. They say they are discontinued. But you go the local Napa store they have them. :huh???: Funy thing to they ain't even expensive! $44.45 for all three cables! not that that is cheap, but I thought it was fair price.
