High speed DW is usually caused by a tire balance problem. Lower speed DW can be tons of things. I would have the front tires checked for balance and run out FIRST. If the tires are not causing it start checking everything connected to the front axle to include, ball joints, track bar, unit-bearings, TREs, and all the arm bushings for wear and looseness. Good Luck, DW can be a bear to fix.

Locks of Love?

Sir Sam Is correct. The sensor is under the center console. There are no sensors on the front of the XJ to deploy the bags. It is all controlled by the little box under the console. My bags will be functional and work as they should. I am using every single bit of the 97 XJs wiring. That makes things much easier to wire in.
-
Nope. I am using all 97+ wiring. Ask Johnnyc nicely and he may tell you. JB, I'll PM you my number. Johnny, If I can con my people into letting me come back out to SoCal I should be home in less than 2 years!!!!!

Me three!

Yep, that and all the other factory plastic in the truck. I have the switch installed just not the pull knob. I have had the dash apart soooo many times it is just easier to leave it in the console. The dash needs to come out one more time to do the HVAC and under dash wiring. I thought the plan was to finish this truck and sale it on Ebay but... My wife wants it more than I do! She asked me to paint it Deep Amethyst purple with some silver lettering. Fair enough for me. She also gave me the go ahead to get a Long Box after our next move to build for myself. I am not a fan of Short Beds, hence the reason for selling this one.

If it is here in GA I can track him down for you. If you need a hand gimme a call. -
And for the picture hounds out there... I got the new dash, console, door panels, and carpet in the truck. I still need to paint all my stock stuff agate and clean up the carpet but it is getting there! Next is to finish the wiring and drop the motor in!

I finally got my TJ sender/pump assembly in. After dropping my stock tank and pulling the pump out of it. I realized that the slosh tray would not let the TJ pump fit where I needed it. Instead of destroying a perfectly good tank I decided to modify the stock pump bracket. The fix was to remove the fuel sender from both and use the TJ sender on the MJs fuel pump. I did not get any of pics of the process but did snap some of the finished product. Here is the TJ sender mounted to the stock MJ pump. I was also able to reuse the stock fuel float arm. I had to heat and bend it a little but it works perfectly! I simply notched the TJ sender with a grinder Which allowed me to use 2 hose clamps to hold it on. The TJ has 4 wires with 2 seperate plugs on the top of the assembly. A MJ only has 3 wires (one being a common ground) with one plug. I removed the stock plug and clipped the ground wire. I put one of the TJ's plugs (pump wiring) in the stock hole and drilled a new hole (sender wiring) and put the other plug in it. top veiw The only thing left to do the fuel system in get a new in tank filter, grommet to hold the pump in. Mine is a pile of gooey jelly. And replace the top gasket that holds the assembly in.

I had a job interview -- FINALLY!!! UPDATE -- I'm in!!!

Good luck Buddy!  -
I'm just watching to see what it sales for. It looks like a hack job to me as well. There are some firewall mods that need to be address when doing the conversion. Mainly, the column is a inch hicher on the 97+ XJs, so you have to move tha hole up. Also the fuse bos is under the passenger kick panel and the factory hole needs to be modded to work with the XJ harness.

That thing used to be perfect. I was there when he crunched it up at Calico. That was a sad day. I watched in buckle the drivers door and bedside on LBJ in JV. I was almost sick from it but Curt just shock it off.
-
Pat, I am also glad things worked out for you! Take care of yourself man. Bo

Curt has been beating on that thing forever! He is the reason my MJ addiction is the way it is. Sadly I have never wheeled any of my trucks with him.

Get some drop brackets from Rough Country. Cheaper than arms, ride better, and you can retain your stockers. -
Saab vents look good with the stripes. I voted for them. Put me in line for the LeBaron vents if you sell them.

I don't know about your laws but I would be willing to donate a few bucks to you to help you get outta that bind. I've been there man, and it is a slippery slope. Please don't think of this as charity. I consider most everyone (the regulars) on this board my friends and would help them where I can. Lemme know if there is anything I can do for you Pat.

There is a seal on the trans. If it is good it will not leak fluid while it is running. Well at least mine did not leak when I chopped the shaft on my 94 XJ when I did the same swap a few years ago.
-
4" angle grinder with cutting blade. Start Jeep and put it in gear. Cut desired length off output while shaft is spinning. Shut off Jeep and put new 242 in.
-
I knew it was 270 and have no idea why I put 170? :dunno: To add another slice to the pie, a TJ is sender is 20 (full) and 220 (empty). The nice thing is a early TJ cluster will bolt into a 97+ XJ dash with no mods required. This is the reason I am going with a TJ sender and cluster in my truck. I did a lot of reading of FSMs and on the web. I could not find any vehicle that ran the XJ values with a tank that would easily fit in the MJ location. I wish I would have known about the Dak tank with the XJ pump before I bought all the stuff to mod mine for a TJ sender. Hind sight is 20/20...
-
IIRC, the 97 XJ values are 20 (full) and 170 (empty) there is a big swing between the newer XJs and the MJs.
-
Now that is some good info to have. I never thought about using a Dak tank in the MJ. A TJ tank will fit fairly easily too.
-
REMEMBER, He is asking about a total 97+ swap. Not just the engine. There is a ton of things to take into consideration. With that said, The MJ fuel sender will not run the 97 fuel gauge. It will to a point, but it will be so far out of wack it would be pointless to even have a fuel gauge. I guess if you were to half _ _ _ the project you could go that way. I prefer to have all my gauges reading accurate. So far my only real sway from a stock Jeep part is going to be the modded fuel tank to house the TJ sender. He still has not even got into the taillight wiring which will require a few modifications to them. They need to have the plugs replaced with weather safe ones (they are inside on a XJ) and the wires need to be legthened about a foot. I Will not be using any of the old wiring from the 89. Once you get into the XJs harness you will see that each rear light has it's own bundle of wires going down each side of the Jeep. Where the MJ has just one bundle going down the drivers side that branches out to the passenger side. The XJs wiring is much more involved than the MJs.

It is not an easy swap by any means. You can't use your stock fuel pump with the swap. It will not provide the proper flow for the newer fuel rail. I am in the process of building my own tank and sender using TJ parts with a stock MJ tank. I got a fuel cell ring for Copperhead customs and it will require me to cut a 6" hole in the top of my tank. Another thing to note is the fuel gauge will not work right using MJ stuff. I am using a TJ cluster as well, because the pump/sender will be from a TJ and will run the engine and fuel gauge properly. The TJ cluster is a direct bolt in for the 97 XJ cluster. If you need some input on my truck please don't hesitate to ask me. I have been through it all at this point and look to have it running in a couple more months, FINALLY!

:agree: Ratchet strap, a BIG one!
