Nice spread sheet. Is there a FACTORY source document to back it up? Besides the factory parts book, I have an 87 Comanche owners manual. That manual say nothing about a 13.5 gal. tank. It list 2 fuel tank sizes - 60.5 liters (16 gal. U.S.) and 89 liters (23.5 U.S. gal.). I think the confusion about the 13.5 gal tank may have come about because the same factory manuals also list the Imperial Gallon size of the smaller 60.5 liter tank as 13.3 Imperial Gallons. It is very reasonable to "think/assume" the 13.3 imp. gal. tank is the same size as the 13.5 U.S. gal Cherokee tank. Besides after looking at all the numbers on that spreadsheet, I would find it very hard to notice the difference between 13.3 and 13.5. Would be nice if that sheet were updated and corrected. It could be VERY useful.

Just checked the 1/88 parts book. MJ lists both 16 and 23.5 gal tank for gas and diesel, also lists an 18 gal fuel tank for Gas, Injected. XJ 2 tanks only for either gas or diesel, 13.5 and 20.2 gal. So no 13.5 gal tank for the MJ

I left that part out of the write-up  Yep, it won't go through like the old one so I backed the pins out of the connector and put the wire though then put the pins back into the connector. Just be careful pushing the pins out. Also remember which wire goes in each hole. Any special pin removal tool? Or did you use a paperclip? Have not looked at the connector to see about removing the pins. Lucky for me I have an extra mirror to play with. Appreciate the very prompt response. John

Looked at the frame drawings in the shop manual. Noticed the short bed brace is about 30 inches long and the long bed brace is about 41 inches long if my scale is close to right. Has anyone used a short bed brace in a bobbed long bed or even the short bed cross bed brace in a long bed? Wondering about possible space for a second gas tank in place of the spare tire. Thoughts anyone?

Seat Upholstery Options?
johnj92131 replied to Rymanrph's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
:agree: I used a pressure washer & detergent on a set of Laredo 2-door buckets on the covers, and they looked almost new. Then found a complete NOS set of 2-door XJ Laredo bucket seat covers on Ebay only listed by the part number w. no application data! Bought these for very cheap and sold the old covers I had cleaned for mucho more than the new ones. Lucky on that one. :D BTW Fiat, what is that apparition between your seats? See the dog above, but the seat levers look like devil dog eyes peering out. Those levers are the seal fold levers. the seats are reversed in position- look at fore and aft adjust levers. -
Seat Upholstery Options?
johnj92131 replied to Rymanrph's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Go with cloth. Vinyl gets too hot in the summer and cold in the winter. There is a great thread on seats in the DIY section here. Gave me the courage to tackle a bench to bucket conversion. Found a ratty pair of wing back buckets from a 2 door XJ and a near perfect set of wing back buckets from a 4 door XJ. Put them all together and have very near perfect buckets installed. While I was at it, had a storage pouch built into the seat backs with extra seat back material from the old seats. Think you will have a real problem finding really good leather seats or covers. -
Need new Seat Belts?
johnj92131 replied to streetjeep2.5's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Would think they are side specific. You have to turn the belt/reel 180 degrees to fit the other side, that would point the male end to the back of the truck instead of the front. Know the female end of the belt is side specific. Yes, I did try that. -
changing ax-4 rear output seal
johnj92131 replied to MancheKid86's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Think the rear seal is N/A from Jeep. Found mine from a friendly fellow on this forum. BUT, I think your local Toyota dealer is the place to go. As you know, the AW-4 was used in a ton of toyota's under a different name - A-340. Volvo also used the AW-4 under a different name. -
Need new Seat Belts?
johnj92131 replied to streetjeep2.5's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Take a look at your pick a part yard. Then take a look at the Cherokee belts. I did a quick look a month ago when I picked up several female ends to match the bucket seats I put in the truck. The male end worked just fine in belts from a 90/91 Cherokee. Now, there are two different types of Cherokee belts and the same two different Comanche belts. (talking the male end, one has two holes the other one hole). I did have the chance to see that the mounting system in the B pillar of the Comanche looked very similar (if not identical) to the Cherokee. I did not check the stamped numbers on the belts, so don't take this to the bank. -
Any reason you can not use the 7 prong plug and harness from a Cherokee? I was planning to go that route and get the welded on bracket to hold the 7 pin plug. The old trailer harness put on in 1991 was falling a part causing all kind of electrical problems. Lot easier to find a Cherokee than a Comanche, much less a Comanche with a proper trailer harness.

Is there something wrong with your Comanche gas tank? You can get a stock replacement tank for a reasonable price on Ebay. I have looked at this and I don't think it will fit under the bed. My truck is a long bed - they have a very large X brace at the back where the spare mounts and where I would want to put a Cherokee 20 gallon tank. But I did see a custom Comanche on Ebay that had a Cherokee tank mounted in the rear, below the bed as a second gas tank. There was a whole lot of work done on that truck. Your Comanche tank will have something between 13 gallons and 23.5 gallons. 23.5 was optional on all long beds and standard on long beds starting about 1990. You can identify the 23.5 gallon tank because it is held by 3 straps, not 2.

Now Here's a Bedside Alternative

These or something like these are frequently on Ebay. JJ -
Do you still have this item? And can you send me some pictures? John Jackson

Don, Got the two diagrams! Many thanks! JJ

Appreciate the offer. But I have the 4 door parts on hand. Thanks, JJ

Yes, body control module did not make much sense to me. Did not have much faith in the shop. Took weeks to run down the problem. But it took me a whole lot more tim and I did not solve the problem. So who is the idiot?

My email: johnj92131@yahoo.com Thanks, JJ

Sinkrun: Did you get this solved?

Don, Are you using the 2 door switch panel or the 4 door switch panel? I am using the 2 door switches with the 4 door harness in door, so I can not control the passenger window. Shop ran a ground so the passenger door window switch would function. Also using cross body harness from a 4 door Cherokee right now. Understand I may have too much of a bastardized system. I would like to have the power door locks function. Is there anything else I need to get the door locks functioning? Something like a "body control module"???? Also, FYI, I have a pair of pre 1991 two door wiring harnesses to work with. One for each door but no pre 91 cross body harness. I had some really weird electrical issues. Finally took the truck to a shop. They cut out a bastardized trailer harnes an just about all the problems were gone. Shop said I needed a "body control module" to get the power door locks functioning. Does this make sense? Think your suggestion of a custom harness makes the most sense. Been screwing with this for a year, of and on. (Can do that when the truck only gets used 4-500 miles a year) When you say "switch/pigtail" I am assuming you cut the wires in the door switch then spliced in the cross body wires? No plugs, just soldered connections?

Thanks for the picture! Looks like the metal bracket holding the jack is cut off and the rubber strap holds the bottle jack in place with the clamp keeping the jack handle and lug wrench in place. Now I need to check the bak panel cover for existing holes. Thanks for the help. OH, what year and model is this picture from???? John J 92131

Off topic question! Where is the bottle jack mounted when you have the back panel? Does anyone have a picture? Picked up a sharp looking rear cab cover, but the bottle jack bracket will not let me properly mount the back cover. Help please. JJ

I am having no luck here finding what I need. So does anyone here have a place for Cherokee parts? Help would be appreciated. Thanks, John
