When we get snow in the local mountain roads, the Calif. Highway Patrol will close all roads to all traffic without chains on the tires. Nothing else is acceptable. 4 or 5 years ago when traveling at Christmas from Albequerque to Flagstaff on I-40 after the road was just reopend to all traffic, I was amazed to see how many cars and SUV's were in the ditches by the side of the road. Simply because people seemed to think 4 wheel drive was the answer to snow and icy roads. It is not. Sudden or even normal movements will send you off in a different direction with no control what so ever. Anti Lock Brake systemts can help a little, but you have to understand that you have almost no traction or control on ice.

How do I Calibrate the RPM's
johnj92131 replied to AMC86Kid's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Before you decide to just throw in a new tach - you need to know that your tach starts at the 8:00 position and goes to the 4:00 position. Most other year tachs you will find will not match the tack you have. AND all the other gauges in you cluster match the tach colors and type fonts. Not so with most other clusters you will find. The tach sweep is also different from later tachs. -
replaced water pump, now overheating ?
johnj92131 replied to thejum57's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Don't forget to turn on the heater as you fill the radiator. Otherwise, the heater core can trap a whole bunch of air. Ask me how I know. Also have to wonder if you blew the head gasket from overheating the engine with the bad water pump. BUT start with the simple things first. DID you change the thermostat when you did the water pump? -
Last September I ran into a new factory Jeep on Mt Etna in Sicily. They were doing engine calibration testing on the mountain for the EU emissions test. We spent 5 weeks in Italy, Greece and Turkey. Last January we spent 11 days in Costa Rica - wonderful places in such a small country.

Just from the fact that you eventually want to do a TDI conversion, the 98 5 speed will save you buying an AX15 transmission later on. If you get an 87-90 Cherokee, you most likely will not get an AX15 transmission. The 98 clutch is external and a 87-90 clutch will be internal. So that is a plus for the 98. I would check the DIY section to see what, if any sensor are different. Thinking speedometer is different (electric vs mechanical). Don't know if anything else is different.

Eagle, I am going to guess that the $351 is below your insurance deductible, so you will have to deal with the lady who hit you by your self. But I will caution you not to sign a medical release very quickly. Here is why: The company I was working for had about 8 of us working at a power plant in Wyoming several years ago. I was on day shift working 7 to 5. Another fellow was working night shift from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. The guy rolled his car at 3:30 a.m. avoiding a deer. He got back to the hotel just as I was at breakfast and told me what happened. Alan thought he was fine till about 3 weeks after the accident.. Net result he was off work for more than 7 months with 2 different operations. Do see a doctor - simply to be on the safe side even if you feel great. Your car insurance medical should pick up the bill and your carrier will subrogate against State Farm - who will pay all your medical expenses.
-
If the $351 estimate is satisfactory to you - just have the work done and give the driver who hit you the bill with a demand letter for payment. Then file a small claims suit against the driver. Don't deal with State Farm. You will win plus court filing fees. Let the other guy deal with his insurance company. Quite sure he can waste more than $71 worth of their time.

Where have you found a good price on a new clutch, pressure plate and flywheel for a 4.0 and AX-15 with internal slave? Any clutches to avoid? Looking for something with a 350 lb/ft rating or ?. Thanks, JJ

Hi 895XJ, Welcome to the Comanche Club! Glad you found your way here. Did notice a couple of people giving me a close look on my trip. Sent you a p.m. with the latest info - not much progress since the last post. Except my wallet is considerably lighter. Purchased the TDI to AX15 adapter kit from Gastodiesel and it arrived at the shop a few days ago. Still have not shipped the AX15 trans to the shop. Expect to get that done just after Christmas. One other piece of progress - the TDI engine has been run on the pallet/engine stand. The alternator was frozen and needed to be rebuilt and the engine needs new injector nozzles.

The AX-15 will have no problems - the transmission can live with a small block V8. But like anything, it will break if you don't take care of it. -

Yes, as far as I know. The AHU is between the 1Z and the ALH. The ALH has a VNT turbocharger, while the AHU/1Z has a waste gate turbo. All 3 engines are VERY closely interchangable. Only the ALH is tunable over the OBDII port. All three engines share the same 90 hp 149 or 157 lb/ft rating. My 96 Passat has the original 1Z engine, with just more fuel mods and a later turbocharger from Europe. Are you on the TDIClub? I am john.jackson9213 over there. -

EXCELLENT! The ALH is a good choice as you can use the gastodiesel engine mounts. I picked up an AHU motor from a 98 for $200 last September. It runs OK, but needs new nozzles. Got the whole power train package, including wiring from the ignition switch to the radiator fan. Also purchased the adapter kit from gastodiesel. Unfortunately, with the AHU, the motor mounts are different. So can not use the gastodiesel mounts. Found a 2 wheel drive AX15 transmission from a member here also last September. -
On Ebay, Presentation is 90/95% of the game! That means PICTURES, PICTURES, PICTURES! The better your pictures, the more interest in the truck you will generate AND the more bids you will get. So post your pictures here and ask for feedback. Also, Christmas time is not the best time to be selling an old truck - no matter how nice. Just a thought.

X 2 on this. I just replaced the starter on Monday/Tuesday for just this reason. That solved the problem. -
Bo, Did you file a police report on the incident? The last guy I know who put sugar in someone's gas tank spent 6 months in San Diego County Jail. True story. I used to work with Mac, he was a 17 year Navy Vet - a former aviation electrician who left the service with a service connected disability. About 12 years ago Mac got evicted from his long term apartment because he would not/could not keep his music down, Well, Mac decided to take things into his own hands and get revenge on the apartment manager who had given him the eviction notice buy putting sugar in the guys gas tank. Late one night, after everybody should be asleep, Mac opened the unlocked garage where the car was parked and put the sugar in the gas tank, closed the garage door and went back to sleep in his apartment. About 3 days later, San Diego Police Department knocked on Mac's door and took him off to Jail. Seems not everyone was asleep and at least one of the neighbors Mac had disturbed spotted him that night. When he got to court, Mac told the judge exactly what he did and why he did it. Mac is no mellennial - he is about 5 years younger than me. But even decent people do STUPID things.

Way too many Cherokees in the junk yards to spend time on a patch up job for that glove box door. Spend some time in Pick N Pull or the like "prospecting" for better quality Cherokee parts. You will find them, And the aged paint on those old parts will be a better match for the rest of your truck than any patch up job you are going to do. I am still looking for that "perfect" bottom of the dash panel to replace the cracked original one on my 91.

Congratulations on your new Comanche! Welcome to the group. You will find lots of helpful people here - even if we don't always agree. The important thing here is you got a nice truck YOU are happy with. Lots of different opinions about what different people want in their trucks. Room for all of us here. I happen to like a stock truck and don't get the need to do some of the things other people need. And that is OK.

Bo didn't say if he had insurance or not directly. BUT, he did say he didn't want a SALVAGE title. To me, that implies his insurance company would brand the title.
-
Well it has been about a month since my original question and the water pump replacement. Short story: Replacing the water pump fixed my problems. No need to do anything else. A properly functioning, stock cooling system cured my issues.

1. Battery Cable upgrade. Cost should be around $100 if you buy a good kit. These old trucks have electrical problems, so start with new upgraded cables. Then go do Cruiser's upgrades/checks. 2. Starter: If the one you have is working - keep it. If it needs replaced - get a good, locally rebuilt one. I just did this today $65 3. Shocks: I would put this off till just a bit later. More important things to do first. 4. Complete tune up: This is quick and easy. New plugs, new wires, etc. The second thing to do - after you check all you brakes. 5. Brakes: The very first thing you should take care of. Check them for wear and good operating condition. Fix as required. 6. Lights. LED lights are nice. TruckLite headlamps are GREAT! Spend the money on them. TRUST Me on this. Just Do It. Other lights can be converted as you go along. Most are inexpensive. 7. Tires. You did not mention this, but you have to have good tires. Don't need fancy wheels. But your need good Brakes and Tires. -
Self-centered cowards like this have been around forever in every generation. Now that I'm older and a slight smidgen wiser, I just avoid / ignore these clowns whenever I can because there is nothing you can do to change it. It is what it is. Sorry this happened Bo. A most excellent quote from a most excellent CC member: The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers. - Socrates (470-399 BC) X TWO Bo, Sorry you ran into the chumps. Sorry People are all over the place, in all kinds of places, at all kinds of times. They support all kinds of political view points - as you know. I am sad to see this happen to that Dodge truck. You took good care of it and it showed when I saw it a couple of years ago. Did you price out what it will take to fix the engine?
