Junk yard find and a question for the gurus. :)
Keyav8r replied to mountainman's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Any idea what they want for the tailgate? Don't know how much freight would be from LV to AL (and the freight line would probably fold, bend and mutilate it), but that tailgate looks sweet! -
Actually, I thought of it as more of a detour than a hijack.
-
Honest, officer, we didn't mean to hijack this thread! Please let us go with a warning and we promise we won't ever do it again. (at least until the next time)

Mine just shows perforation right above the flare and it's solid above that. I think I have enough with a little to spare. Alexia - you really did find gold at the jy!
-
ROLL TIDE ROLL! I grew up in the Bear Bryant years and always expect them to win every game, every year. Had a few not so wonderful seasons here and there, but I believe Nick's the man to put us solidly back on track.
-
Do you have one of everything, in addition to having the best looking MJ?

So far I've found one Comanche in a jy around here. It had good bed sides above the wheel wells, but I've got them now! My 88 MJ has rust on the driver's side, so I'll be using that sheet metal. The rest may be available if my passenger side is good and my flares can be re-used.

Thanks, guys. That helps a lot. harley4579 - the boot from Team Grand Cherokee labeled for Cherokee and Comanche 84-96 is the only one of mine that's still in one piece. I think the PO may have tried to replace it to keep the noise, exhaust and dust out of the cab. skidoo_j and CPA Tim - thanks for the info and photo on the Quadratec 52106.3 boot for the floor. I'm curious what the dealer cost was. cpa tim - I think your boot was in worse shape than mine is. Now if I can get some dimensions and info on the Quadratec 52109.2 to confirm that it is or isn't the one that fits on the shifter tower on the transmission I can maybe get this puppy back together.
-
I'm finishing floor repairs on my 88 MJ and will soon be ready to put the interior back in. Before I put in the carpet, etc. I want to replace the shifter boots and it looks like my truck has three boots. There is a round shifter boot mounted directly on the transmission shifter. I think that one is the boot Quadratec sells as PN 52109.02. Is that right? Then there is a round/oval boot with a rubber covered mounting flange screwed to the cab floor. Anybody know a brand/part number for that one? Finally, there is the rectangular, accordian pleated boot that fits in the console. The first two in my truck are torn and dry rotted. The one for the console looks okay. I've looked at Omix-Ada boots but can't find any dimensions to determine if they could be made to fit with a little persuasion (redneck engineering). Does anyone have OEM or aftermarket part numbers and sources for these boots? Yes, I know photos would help and I'll try to post some this weekend.

I have a later model steel valve cover with the full length baffle and the Fel-Pro VS50458R gasket (thanks for the link to the thread, Hornbrod). From Jeff's post, there are new rubber grommets with the VCR gasket that replace the old ones in the cover. Do I re-use the steel spacers that were in the cover? I'll have to pick up vacuum fittings and hose as some of the OEM stuff had already been picked. I'm going to try to get it on my 88 this weekend, if I ever finish the &@$?!! floor repair and bucket install.

O2 sensor removal options
Keyav8r replied to drcomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Put a wet shop towel on the sensor while you're heating the bung. Cooling the sensor while heating the bung will loosen the threads more. You'll have to keep wetting the shop towel to keep from burning it, but it will increase your chances of getting the sensor out without wrecking the manifold. (Steel manifold -right?) -
Check for clutch master cylinder leakage at your fuse box. The slave cylinder is either internal to or external to the bell housing. Mine (88) is internal, not sure if 91 is internal or external. I

Need help/advice re: speedo cable
Keyav8r replied to MJRemi's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Try Jackson & Son Jeep in Talladega, AL. (205) 362-7772. He has NOS cables. Bought one for my 88 MJ. Can't remember exact price, but it was better than Rock or Advance. -
Thanks, Don. That's exactly the thread I needed. I got the steel cover (only late model I've been able to find at jy) and bought the Fel-Pro gasket. Will try to get it together this weekend. ROLL TIDE!
-
I found a 96 valve cover for my 88 4.0. Somewhere in this forum someone posted a Fel-Pro gasket part number (I think it is blue?) with a note about removing the spacers in gasket or the ones on the valve cover. Can anyone provide a link to that post? I've searched for "valve cover gasket" and there's about 40 pages of posts to look through.

Thanks for the ideas. The fabric part of the seats are pretty clean, have some upholstery cleaner for that. I was thinking simple green on the hard plastics (kick panels, B pillar and door trim, and console) but will try the dish detergent first. Oxy-Clean on the seat belts? I'll have to try that as mine are fairly grubby. Anything Ng not to use on the dash?

Any recommendations on products to clean interior vinyl? Need to clean interior panels (hard) and vinyl parts of seats. I have the interior stripped out for floor repair and coating and would like to clean everything well before/as I re-install.

Don't forget the skyhooks - invaluable if you need to pull an engine outdoors or get hard stuck while wheeling. They are usually kept under the counter so they don't float up against the ceiling.
-
Check Amazon and EBay, too. I bought my chrome solid lug nut set there. If you're using steel wheels make sure you get the beveled end style. The ones for alloy wheels have a longer shank. Amazon had sets with and without locking lugs.

Google Jackson & Sons Jeeps - Talladega, AL - has NOS on a ton of Jeep parts. Bought a 4WD cable for my 2WD 88 MJ w/BA10/5. He's reasonable on price, too

Tail light replacement sockets/harness
Keyav8r replied to yuhaze's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Take one of your old sockets with you to NAPA, Advance, Auot Zone, etc. or to the jy and match it up. New ones from a parts place should work without any problem and can be returned if defective, but may be pricey. I look at XJ's and MJ's (so far only one MJ in jy around here) every time I go to the jy and if there are any decent looking sockets (front or rear) I clip them off as far back as I can reach. They're $2 to $3 each so if some of them don't work I'm not out much. Haven't gotten to the back end of the truck yet but know I have light problems there so I'm stocking up on replacements. -
I used '95XJ buckets from jy by cutting the XJ brackets off the sliders and welding on brackets to make the seats "sit" right. I'm using the studs in the floor for the front brackets and added stiffener pieces under the floor to bolt down the brackets at the rear of the sliders. Still have to do some fine tuning to get the fit between the doors and the hump just right. Found another set in the right color and better condition that will bolt on the sliders - I think they came from a '98 XJ, but not 100% sure.

Thought I had read something about using the GC weather stripping in the forum, but may be wrong. I'll post if it works and if not I'll be back to the p&p for the right stuff.
-
OK - I'll pull off the door panels and check for clips. While I have them off I can check the inside of the doors and maybe put some decent speakers in. And install the Grand Cherokee weather stripping, etc. Just another item on the things to do to my Comanche list!
