  1. Sounds like you've got more rust than truck! I'd strip all the good parts and scrap the unibody. You didn't mention condition of the doors, dash, ECU, flares, interior, header panel, bumpers, etc., but all those parts could be re-used or sold to other members that may need them. Go the donor route if you're sure you can lay hands on another MJ that's in better shape.
  2. Back when I had a Ranger pick- up I bought a full size truck bed mat at Big Lots and cut it to fit. Got it on a clearance deal for $20 or so. It was still in the truck when my son-in-law traded it in 250K miles later. Just make a cardboard pattern, lay the mat on some plywood or more cardboard and cut it with a utility knife.
  3. Several members have posted about a generic type of Dynamat insulation in their cabs. It has a rubberized layer backed by foil and is self-adhesive. They said they bought it at either Lowes or Home Depot, but no one at my local stores has heard of it. Does anyone have a brand name for the insulation or know what its original use is? I'm getting ready to trial fit my interior and would like to put this in before the carpet, door panels and trim goes in.
  4. Finally got the photo of the starter relay in my 88 MJ uploaded to Photobucket (I think). All the wires on the post terminals have ring terminals ends and all look like they have fusible links about 4" to 6" from the ring terminal end. The wires on the post include: A large diameter blue a small orange an orange and a green together on one terminal two greens together on one terminal There will also be a large red that comes from the positive terminal on the battery - on my truck this red wire comes off the red (positive) battery cable that goes to the starter. Going clockwise from the post terminal, the wires on the spade terminals are: 1. Green 2. Black with white stripe 3. Green 4. Orange (I think it may have a black stripe - will look again if needed) 1, 2 & 4 come out of the same wiring loom and 3 comes out of a separate loom and looks a little larger, maybe one wire size.
  5. I can't get a standard 1/2" drive socket and pull handle on it because one of the motor mount bolts is in the way. Had a 5/8" box end on it with 1-1/8" x 1-1/4" box end "hooked" on the other end (about 18" - 20" effective length) and it didn't move at all. Read on jeepforum (thanks - danbyrambler) that the bolts were installed with red loctite. I'll be looking for a piece of pipe about 3' long. Neat thread on the site about eliminating the adapter.
  6. I'm trying to stop oil leaks above the oil pan to see if my rear main or oil pan is leaking. Have the later model valve cover ready to go back on with the "new" Fel-Pro gasket and the distributor gasket ready to be replaced. But - I can't seem to break the bolt on the oil filter adapter loose to change the o-ring(s). Doesn't want to turn in either direction. It has a 5/8" head (5/8" wrench) and i've had a box end on it with a cheater and still can't turn it. Could it be left hand threads? Any other ideas? I can put more pressure on it but don't want to break something unnecissarilly.
  7. ftpiercecracker1 - PM me with your e-mail and I'll e-mail you a photo of the starter relay wiring on my 88 MJ, Have it on my iPad and can't seem to get it to Photobucket.
  8. OK - the dual diaphragm booster is longer (or thicker), but about the same diameter. Thanks, Alexia. Country - it's from an XJ, but it looks just like the MJ booster in your photo. Back to PnP for either a '96 XJ or a WJ booster. Is the WJ swap more difficult than the XJ swap?
  9. Is there any way to tell if a brake booster is single or dual diaphragm externally? A co-worker gave me a booster w/master cylinder but doesn't know what year Cherokee it was from. It looks kind of like my 88 MJ booster and mc, but not exactly.
  10. Engine running when bleeding? Why? Never heard of bleeding being done this way this before.
  11. Parts manual, memory bank. Tomayto, tomahto. An answer is an answer. I won't question the source!
  12. Thanks, I knew someone on here could pull that out of their memory bank!
  13. Got the washers, but no bolt. I searched "brake hose bolt" on Advance Auto site and it brought up a lot of different sizes but not one that was for a 88 MJ. Guess I'll have to pull one and take it or measure it to match up. I was trying to get rebuilt calipers and hose installed before I broke the connection. Trying to minimize brake fluid drainage from the line and the amount of bleeding to follow. I'll just stock up on brake fluid and plan a day to bleed (still rear proportioning valve).
  14. What the heck! Should read " drilled down the shank to provide a flow path"' not amaze a flow path. Must be getting tired and letters running together.
  15. Does anyone know the size for the bolt that attaches the brake hose to the front wheel caliper on a 88 MJ? The metal end of the hose at the caliper is flat and square with a hole drilled through it. The attaching bolt is cross-drilled where it fits through the metal hose end and drilled down the shank to amaze a flow path into the caliper body. I tried Advance Auto, but they don't list one for Comanches. Have several 10mm X 1.5 mm of differing length. Haven't tried Quadratec or others yet. Thought someone here could just pull the PN out of their a, er, out of thin air. I've replaced rear brakes except drums (they cleaned up well) rotors, rear hose and am working on calipers and front hoses next. Thought I might as we'll replace the bolts too.

  17. Check every ground on the truck. Replace all of them that look at all suspect. Heck, just go ahead and replace them all. Search for threads on grounds with info on adding / upgrading grounds. I haven't had my MJ long, but grounds are the next thing on my to do list after I finish floor repairs. Need romget all my lights working correctly. FYI - my daughter had a Honda Prelude that periodically burned wires. I re-wit,Ed half the engine compartment before a Honda mechanic told mr the Preludes had issues with grounds that caused the burnt wires. Added engine to body ground and no more burnt wires.rp
  18. Don -do you have the PN for the black box? Assume Cherokees have them too and they will work on a 88 Pioneer? BTW - ROLL TIDE!
  19. Saw a maroon one on 1st Avenue N in Birmingham, AL about two weeks ago. Guy was making a turn off the street in front of our office and drove away before I could flag him down. Truck looked like a daily driver, in good shape. Body looked straight with good paint.
  20. After reading this thread I tried to find the post with photos of all the rear axle covers. My D35 seems to have a lot of slack (some may be U-joints or tranny) and I might want to swap in a better rear end instead of re-building it. Tried a lot of different search phrases but couldn't find the post. Anyone know where it is?
  21. Dang! I just noticed I have been elevated to Advanced Member. They don't know me very well, do they?
  22. He said he has a 4.0 HO in his 87. Does the HO have two O2 sensors? My 88 is Renix and has one. Do HOs generally get better or worse mileage than Renix engines, engine condition, miles and state of tune being equal?
  23. BTW - are you doing a build thread on your MJ? From what you've posted so far it should be a good one.
  24. GREAT upgrade! Search seems to be more functional. I like that the topic titles are shown. Is the "Go to page" function history? I was using that in an attempt to read the whole MJ Tech forum ( appears there are more posts per page as the number of pages is less). Tapatalk? Shout box? I hope you will put some explanation/instructions up for all of us social media challenged members.
