This could be opening up a can of worms as there's been plenty of conversations... and arguments... over the differences of strength between DOM (drawn over mandrel) and HREW (hot rolled electric welded) tubing. While they both start life almost identical that each type starts off as a sheet, then is cut, rolled and welded back together as a tube that's where the similarities stop. The DOM starts off slightly larger in size so it can be finished by being squeezed through a die. This is a cold process so it will always be precisely the size it is required to be both inside and outside diameter. As far as actual strength, DOM is going to be almost twice the tensile strength when compared to HREW. Again, this is due to the cold process that the tubing is finished in. Then there's the applications. If you were to be building a competition rock buggy that would be taking some serious drop offs and side impacts, then one should really us DOM. For the type of offroading that most do, I'd say that HREW would be plenty strong especially if you have some good tow points that tie into the frame. DOM will be much harder to bend also. I've made bumpers out of DOM when specifically asked to do so. Otherwise, I always use HREW for bumper applications.

Sorry guys... That's a photochop that's been floating around for a few years now.

They're all 10" fans. I've had two of them for years now and I have no idea what manufacturer they are. I bought them at an Advance Auto close to six year ago. The third fan I just had sitting around but it had the same numbers on it so I ran with it.

I'm in the same boat so I just made up my own setup. I used a 210 on/195 off switch in a HO thermostat housing for two of the fans and one remains on constant. The shroud is 16 gauge stainless. Only other change was to get rid of the studs for where the clutch fan bolts on and replace them with bolts for clearance. Works great! The other two fans only come on when I'm in traffic or just idling around. Gauge stays right under 200* all the time.

Well, today was the day that the poor old '91 was taken out of commission. Had a couple things to take care of in the new chassis then things really started happening. The door jams got a coat of new paint just because I thought it'd be easier now and less over spray later on in the interior. Then there was the '91. It was almost sad taking things apart as I really haven't had any issues with the truck over the almost two years that I've had it. It's really for the best, though. The rust in it is just too deep to structurally trust it for too much longer. So, I started with the dash. Plans are to go from the firewall forward just to get it running again to I can move it around the yard under its own power. Metal work next, then paint and reassembly. In preparation for the under hood change over, I got the manifolds back on. On a side note, the weather forecast calls for potential hail. Seems strange to try and protect something that looks like the white truck over the red one. :hmm:

Yeah... I know... Anyhow, the wifey was all, "Hey, do you think it's possible to finish that headboard tonight?" Well, I needed a little help if that was going to happen so she took matters into her own hands. And anyone who knows me knows that I really don't like working with wood. In fact, I'm pretty sure I have a grimace on my face just about everytime I have to touch the stuff. Anyway... done and happy!

It's almost time to take the '91 off the road and pass the point of no return. I'm expecting to break every single bolt taking that truck apart so once it starts getting swapped over, there's no going back! As for the new chassis, it got a little more stripped down. The interior it totally out, along with a few more underhood items. The manifolds came off due to the crack in the exhaust manifold big enough to... how was it Austin?... "big enough for midgets to walk through". While I was in there, I started looking at what I'm going to do for fuel lines as I know the ones on the '91 are not going to swap over nicely. Fortunately, Austin left the lines for the 2.5 that was in there and the quick connects at the firewall. Cool! I'll just leave that alone and splice into the rubber lines that connect to them. On to the interior, I knew that the floors needed some attention. I was happily surprised that they're still mostly solid! I only need to change out the common spot under the pedals. Here' an interesting spot on the trans tunnel too. You been hauling around chubbies in the past, Austin? :laughin: Well, the box came off too to take a closer look at everything and I was again happily surprised at how solid the frame is. I've got a couple mouse nests to clean out, but the only real rust is on the axle and springs. Let's compare: Hmm... I still have some work to do. I kinda wish I could just do some magic Freaky Friday type of change-o switch-o. :thwak:

Yeah... it works okay. Every once in a while I have to tell myself to keep the hammer strikes to one side when I notice it starting to lean. Threw some paint at it last night... update!

Another day on this. I added more to the scrolly, leafy things and added some formed channels to put the wood into. Other such headboard stuff as well... Going to be some oak 1x2s stained the same color as the rest of the trim in the room.

Cool project! I love the lines of these Falcons and Rancheros. Any long term plans for it?
