SOA Ideas and Speculation/Rambling
neohic replied to BeenJaminJames's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here's an interesting thread on using Grand Wagoneer leafs in a SOA configuration while not going ridiculously high. -
Not really sure if this is what this thread is all about, but I find the strangest things to do right around 2:00 in the morning. Normally, I'm a routine sleeper... usually in bed right around 9:30 and up again at 6:00 during the week and around 7:30 on the weekends. I sleep a lot. When I'm up in the middle of the night that typically means that there's something wrong. YouTube is always a fun place to start... get into some crazy videos that turns into researching dumb ideas of potential future builds. TED talks... more research. At some point, my online archaeology leads me to going through the whole house doing OCD like actions like refolding all the blankets because no two are folded the same. Late night snacks can also get crazy. All else fails and I still can't fall asleep... Counting With Pictures.

That's good advise even for those with self inflicted projects piling up. Just like eating a whale, man.

Anything is fixable whether it be done by a professional or by yourself. If it were me, and I despise body work, I'd give it a shot and see what I could make out of it. It's already totaled, right? If it doesn't work out to your liking then I'd find a donor and start swapping. On the other hand, it's still looks to be a pretty rust free truck with good bones. Someone would buy it in its current state and fix it themselves or turn into a trail rig. It's a sad deal no matter how you look at it. I know I'd be lost it I were in your shoes. Keep your chin up, sir.

Looking good, man!

You headed west and didn't stop here along the way?!

I know you said that you were going to work in some kind of body lift, but I'm curious why you put the front crossmember so high. If it were me, I would've taken advantage of the opportunity for making room for a larger radiator. Regardless of going with a stock Jeep drivetrain or not, even the 4.0 could use better cooling. I bet a ZJ radiator would fit your frame with little rework. Even going with a stock unit for mock up and use for now would open up a huge door for future upgrades.

That's true too as it just wouldn't work as a continuous storyline because the poor guy would be getting a little old and running out of steam by now. I meant it more as the continuing shenanigans that the character keeps running into.

"too High To Get It Right" Portal Comanche

:rock on: Beautiful other pictures too. It always astonishes me to see pictures of the rest of the world... just amazing. -
Not at all. I'm not suggesting that the Mad Max franchise will continue on to more endeavors, but think about all of the movies featuring James Bond. Some would say that the character should've stopped after Sean Connery... others will say that Roger Moore was the best (not to skip over George Lazenby, but who even remembers that Bond anyhow). Then there was Timothy Dalton and the other two in the more current Bond roles. In my opinion, those two can remain unnamed as I consider the classy concept idea behind the James Bond character to have died after Dalton... who was a stretch but just barely made it. You get my point. Just because a person isn't playing a recurring role, that doesn't mean that the character needs to stop. I think it's the perfect time to take a dip back into the Mad Max pool as there's been plenty of other successful restart or continuations from past concepts. Transformers... Star Trek... Planet of the Apes... countless comic book turned movie characters... don't forget to stay tuned for Star Wars to return... There really haven't been a whole lot of movies over the past number of years that I've been really interested in that wasn't a new, independent idea. That's the kind of movie I dig on... something that I already pretty much know the story line before it happens but still get super excited when I see that same something happen. Not to mention that I totally saw that something coming from a mile away. It's probably just the thought of familiar memories from way back when that was now interpreted in a new way. I say bring it on. Just because Mel Gibson isn't playing Max by no means sets in stone that the storyline can't continue forward. If someone can tell the story just as well or better than an original character, I'm fine with that. Think of like as if you were reading it in a book that wasn't just a script. At no point would you be reading along and then come across, "I think we've got some hoon trouble," said Mel Gibson as Mad Max... just doesn't roll off the page too well.

Currently in process of restoration.

I miss driving shifting a manual everyday. When I work in repair my daily was a rotten '89 that I swapped to 4wd... loved that truck. It sported 33s on a crappy Rough Country 3" lift. I never regeared it so even with the 3.07s it was still a bunch of fun! My '72 VW is a 4spd and I can't tell you how much fun it is to throw that little car around town. Also, for a couple years after I changes jobs I drove back and forth to work about 150 mile round trip. I did that in a '98 Jetta with a four cylinder/5spd... still miss that car. Not a lot of power, but the trans made up for it! On the flip side, I can jump in my Eliminator and I don't really beat it up at all. Granted, I can't really say that I really beat on any of my vehicles but when I put my foot into it I sometimes catch myself reaching over as if looking to grab another gear. This truck WILL be a manual someday.

Project "Honcho" - The '87 MJ
neohic replied to Zenobian_84's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Uh... Bemidji is a little more than a 30 minute drive from Minneapolis... more like almost 4 hours. Very familiar with Bemidji too! That's right up there where I've been selling my stuff all summer. My mother in law lives in Lake George which is about 20 miles south of there. Also a stone's throw away from Itasca (very good camping there). I whole area is very cool... both figuratively and literally. Too bad to be condemning a solid vehicle to an undoubtedly rusty MN disease though. :( -

What's ironic is that this truck started out as a red Eliminator too. :laughin:- 32 replies

Originality... We all can relate to this word in one way or another, right? For some of us, this word means being unique in a world of "belly button" vehicles. For others, this word means taking it one step farther. How about knowing that you're in a unique vehicles among unique vehicles? Take a look through this forum. There's modified, heavily modified, barely modified, stock and still on the road... not much for survivors though. Why is that? Because while we love these trucks, there hasn't been a brand new one roll of the assembly line for quite some time now. I think there's just something special... unique!... about a low mileage survivor. This is Jessica... 1989 Eliminator's '89 Eliminator!!! YEAR/MODEL ● 1989 Jeep Comanche Eliminator ENGINE/PERFORMANCE ● Straight Six 4.0L - RENIX I bought a high performance oiled cotton air filter that you can clean with a solution. It has a warranty for replacement. Good results and I like it. Here is the website: http://www.greenfilterusa.com/ Have completed all of Cruiser 54's tips! DRIVETRAIN ● AW-4, Dana 35, 4x2 system COOLING ● Stock ELECTRICAL/IGNITION ● Upgraded engine, chassis, and component grounds. Stock SUSPENSION/STEERING ● Stock Soon to have: 5" lift with 32" Tires! INTERIOR ● Red LED driver and passenger hub lighting Custom Cupholders: I bought a cupholder online and the dishes are very shallow. So what I did was drill out the bottom of one and then attached a beer coozie on the bottom of the cut out. So now instead of the dish being 2 inches deep, it is now 7 inches or so. BRAKES ● 1996 Dual Diaphram Brake Booster upgrade! I actually wrote a DIY on this and just take a look. Twice the braking power of the stock system. I highly recommend this and this is a really clear writeup with a lot of views: http://comancheclub....ter-conversion/ LIGHTING ● Supplemental wiring harness for the headlights to get the full voltage from the battery. I have also made my own trailer wiring harness. New wiring harness with stock bulbs: :rock on: Stock MJ Fog lights with Jeep covers  EXTERIOR ● No rust :rotfl2: Original paint Rust proofed when bought and I also re-apply every year WHEELS/TIRES ● Stock wheels and tires. Spare wheel is a mag as well. MISCELLANEOUS ● I have a Flowmaster 44 Delta Flow Exhaust and a high flow cat. Fiberglass cap The current milage is 81,000 miles. Shes all original and I bought the truck 4 years ago which only had 31,000 miles on it!! An older guy owned it before me and the truck was garage kept its whole life. I basically stole the truck off of his wife because she had no idea what the truck was worth.... $2200 and she was mine. This was my first vehicle/truck! Remember That One Time?... Tell Us Your Best MJ Story ● Too many stories to choose from! I would have to say though that every year I go to the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit, MI. For those who do not know what it is, its a parade of old classics and fast cars that cruise down Woodward for 12 miles or so. The sides of the streets are filled with spectators to watch all the cars and trucks go by. The first time I went I made sure Jessica was all waxed up and she sure got the attention she deserved. I have 10 people offer to buy my truck but of course I turned them down! Just the feeling I got from everyone giving the truck compliments and seeing something they never have before. I also heard, "What is that thing?!" a bunch of times too (Its a Jeep thing...)! I also gave the crowd a few tastes of Comanche rubber B). But then sure enough out of the hundreds of cars on the road, I seen another Comanche! I chased him down and we parked on the side of the road to talk about our Jeeps! CC is Awesome!... Why Do You Think So? ● I think CC is awesome because its different from other Jeep forums. It obviously is focused on Comanches only but as a group we really want to help each other out. I guess we can be considered as a family! We have consistent members that always tune in to update their posts or look at others to see if they need any help. The posts that people make are also like a second work manual! I love the detailed instructions for DIY projects and that is why I make some myself so others can benefit from them. I use CC so much for information and opinions on various things. The admins are always open for suggestions and keep the website running well, as well as the new Tapatalk phone app! We are just so dedicated to our MJs and this forum. We even have apparel, magnets and other accessories! I mean come on, if that isnt CC pride then I don't know what is. My friends always give a little chuckle when I talk about Comanche Club but they just don't get it! Its a Comanche thing, you wouldn't understand... ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● Holly crap, Jake! The cleanliness of your MJ is just unreal. Low miles... mostly stock... I think this is a good example of how to do it right. Even with the small changes and future plans for the truck, nothing on it would take much effort to put it back exactly how the factory intended it to be. Great truck and great example of the great look of these amazing trucks! Not to mention those sexy Eliminator stripes!... but of course I'm just a little bit bias. Congratulations and thanks for being a part of Comanche Club! -Ben This post has been promoted to an article

Project "Honcho" - The '87 MJ
neohic replied to Zenobian_84's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
How far into MN? Having it shipped or planning on driving? -
Made up another doozy recently. We're painting the shop at the school I work at so things needed to get clear from the walls. That meant that I had a whole bunch of curtains to take down. Those curtains are held up with wing nuts: ... lots of wing nuts: That's about a third of what needed to come down. I decided to skip the carpal tunnel and whipped up a wing nut driver. Worked great!

I think it's two sided. I think the respect it deserves is to be enjoyed and out in the public. The best part about this truck was that it was one of the original trucks that the Archers built... then it was rolled and the roof reskinned... then it was turned into a spare truck until it was sold off... then it was raced under a different outfit... then it was retired and used as a driver... then it sat. Think of it like a yearbook to the SCCA Jeeps. It was around for each season that there was a Jeep competing in professional motorsports and it had the scars to prove it. If I had this truck I would leave everything mostly as it was. I'd take all the stickers off that the Archers didn't put there, cut and buff the remaining clear coat, get it running properly, and enjoy it. Granted, it wouldn't be put to its former glory but it had a great life and a bunch of fun was had with it. It'd still be the same truck... I think of it like a proper retirement. Is it good that it'll be cared for and rebuilt? You bet!... but how many people will actually see it to spread the good word of the glory days of Jeep Motorsports with it sitting in a private collection?

Because he's not really interested in it as a Comanche. I think Dean likes it as a play thing and potential big check. It was originally bought to flip because his real passion is Jaguars and other performance road cars... road cars like this that he wants to completely restore once he sells the truck to fund it:
