Gearing down for the Diesel MJ. IL > PA > VA > IL
Blue88Comanche replied to Automan2164's topic in The Pub
first aid kit, safety first right? dad was a paramedic so when i take long trips i snag his 600+ piece field kit. at least take some rubbing alcohol, ace bandages, super glue, a lighter and a torch edit: if you want a little more fun, add a empty refillable pressurized round-up sprayer, and something to treat burns to the list -
i don't have the linkage hooked up, and i don't have the linkage.. yet.. i have been manually shifting it with a wrench under the mj

I took off the front drive shaft and it no longer makes that grinding sound. but that means i now have a 2wd jeep and that kills the concept of a transfer case... looks like i will be pulling the one off of Red's donor.

What Model MJ Do I Have?
Blue88Comanche replied to RockMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
did the title not say what model it was? -
If he has a 242 transfer case, there is no disconnect, and the front drive shaft does turn all the time. It just isn't always connected to the engine. (Unless he's running the 242 with the original MJ front axle.) the first thing was to lock the cad when i heard the grinding ( i had the 231 to start with but it was 21 spline) the grinding sound only happens when i turn, 2wd or 4wd does not matter. i already checked the u joints. my last tranny and tc was a ba10 with 231, the ba10 died so i swapped to a 89 ax-15 and a 94 242. whose where the only things swapped.. the front axle was not making any noise when the old setup was working and i doubt sitting waiting for the tranny broke anything due to extreme boredom.. so the only thing i can think of is the 242 is damaged internally
-
thanks, tonight after i get home from work i am going to remove the front drive shaft to see if maybe the rotation in the front shaft caused problems when turning, my guess it that the internal shifter in the 242 is damaged. so when i turn the front and rear shafts rotate at different speeds as it should but not properly. guess i will find out this weekend

5.2 Magnum or MB OM617 turbodiesel?
Blue88Comanche replied to turboxr's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
 if only i could figure a way to get our 6 liter turbo diesel from the f-250 into my MJ... I would be set!. if you are going to do a lot of towing then i would go with the 5.2, 1st because you already have it, 2nd parts should be cheaper and easier to find, 3rd that added power you can play with your diff gears more. instead of using 4.10s or 3.77, you have more options of more mpg friendly gears like 3.07, and 3.54. a diesel would be cool and i am all for it, you just need to figure out what is worth more to you? mpg or power? just my thoughts -

Blue88Comanche replied to Blue88Comanche's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
the TC i think is messed up, so this weekend i am going to try to swap the 242 from the xj donor. what it is doing is when i turn it makes a horrid sound when i turn. all my u joints are fine. before my tranny and tc swap the front was fine. -

where is a good place i can get quality replacement lug nut studs for my D44? the Aussie locker website said if i can change my own brakes then i can install their lockers, but i have also read that everything in there needs to be just so in order to work properly. is installing a locker something i can do my self or should i get a mechanic to do it for me? the track bar mount on the drivers side frame by the engine, how do i replace it and how hard is it to do? I have a np242 that i think is the cause of the horrid grinding noise when i turn, and i would like to rebuild it. i know there are a lot of rebuild kits out there for it but what rebuild kit would you recommend? thanks hopefully i will have a busy yet productive weekend

sub wiring question
Blue88Comanche replied to Blue88Comanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
So i did remember right :D Hmm ok, must not be much power, plus in a MJ theres only power to those wires when the door is open :rotf: If it works for you then :clapping: err.. i mean my amp power wire is run on the drivers side, i don't have any power options on my MJ yet! lol -
Front Bumper Brush Guard
Blue88Comanche replied to sinkrun's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I would see if he ban make some tie in for the frame then I can't remember where they are located however This morning Chaos was put to sleep, his kidneys failed and there was nothing anyone could do. My uncle made him a small casket for him and his bed and a few of his things. I just got home from my parents house. :( -
Words can't tell how sad I am. Chaos was put to sleep this morning, he was in much pain and both kidneys failed. He will be missed and always loved.

AX-15 problems
Blue88Comanche replied to Blue88Comanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
the shifter stub was too short in the tranny, so it was coming out of the "guide" i guess you would call it, when you use 1st 2nd 5th and rev, however it was long enough to shift 3rd and 4th -
Front Bumper Brush Guard
Blue88Comanche replied to sinkrun's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
i would ask more about how the bumper attaches.. ask if it only used the factory mount (six bolts) or if they have a frame tie in (8 to 12 bolts) you don't really want to use just the factory holes due to strength requirements for recovery edit: do you plan to use it offroading or will it be for looks? edit: again you may also end up waiting for it to be built.
