87 Comanche Rock Crawler Project Hell
Big_Mark replied to AreWeThereYet's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
89 MJ beat me to it, leaf springs are not good for rock crawling, unless you like to hammer down all the time, which has it's place -
I fixed the website, lol
-
Pics please, you can buy rear springs, but ya gotta provide us with mo info brudda

Not to shabby, for the most part it looks very straight! Enjoy!

Thanks guys, I'll try dryer sheets first, then will go nuclear, lol I do have an exterminator that comes around we have bait that seems to work ok, but clearly not well enough. I will let you know how it goes!

When I bought my Comanche it had a nest in the AC box, which I cleaned out and life was grand. Now I live in the sticks and have a barn to keep it (and my 69 Mach 1 Mustang) in and over the winter the friggin mice have moved in and p****d up both interiors. I know I am not going to be able to get rid of the mice, I live around blueberry fields and pastures, so mice are just part of life here. So I am wondering what y'all do to keep em out of your rigs? I've heard that strobe lights/noisemakers can help but I am not sure, I'd rather cut to the chase, if possible, lemme know folks cause after I pull the interior apart Again I don't want to revisit the stench.

Needing new Fuel Sending Unit and Pump
Big_Mark replied to TX_Heat's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don't remember, exactly but it was a great price considering they are the only one making these! -
Based on the amount of fluid on your pitman arm you might want to make sure your steering box isn't bad. Check the fluid first see how much you lose over time. The symptom description sounds like the death wobbles, which narrows it down to all your front steering/track bar, stabilizer shock, mounts. how hard can it be?

One inch Spring spacer question
Big_Mark replied to knever3's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Is the body itself cracked or rusted through? It just looks like your bushings and the metal plate the sit on are in bad shape. If you front springs have finally started to sag then yea you might want to get some spacers, but I would suggest against the poly ones, or at least the hard poly bushings. I put hard poly bushings on my CJ8 years ago and over time, while the did not go bad, anywhere they met the body of my Jeep, the metal cracked since poly does not give like rubber does. If you can get a 1" spacer and an OEM bushing that might do ya proper, now and over the next 15 years. -

projectunclelou Badge removal...
Big_Mark replied to Heath's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I was able to get badges off junk yard Comanches using putty a knife, they came off in one piece. With that said since you have the luxury of doing this at home, definitely apply some heat, that adhesive is strong. -
It is good to know other people pay attention to the lessons learned in Science fiction, as with many things sci-fi becomes reality, Think Star Trek: communicators/tricorders = cell phones, there are so many other things that became reality, why should the AI result be any different? I just hope we can count on a Capt Kirk to blow AIs mind when it comes down to it:

Help figuring out Gear Ratios
Big_Mark replied to MississippiComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
3:73 will do ya well. If you plan to go larger than 31's, ever.... go 4:10 but honestly 3:73 is a great ratio all around. -
found the oil leak... new question
Big_Mark replied to Pete M's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
micro fracture in the sheet metal of the pan maybe? Them things are built thin! -
The reason you might want to go SOA is instant 4-5" lift. Or as has been pointed out, it gets the U bolts pointing up so the threads and bolts don't get hung on stuff (and bent, damaged) when wheeling. Problems with SOA include driveline geometry/length, leaf pack warping "S" shaped without anti wrap bar in place, basically it ends up being a lot of work to get right. For your use case it seems to me SUA is the way to go unless you are building a "Hammer down" machine and are trying to stuff Dana 60's under it with 42" tires.

Shiny Leaf Spring Bushings
Big_Mark replied to krustyballer16's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Sometimes you gotta break some eggs before you make the perfect meal! Don't give up brother! -
I had to replace my entire fuse block then repair a few lamp sockets, rear wiring harness before my MJ came to life. It was a tedious project but I got through it.

I have the skils and the software, please send the file thanks!

The Durango pump swap it a good one, if you want to rebuild your steering box I recommend West Texas Offroad . They do a steering RAM assist for heavy duty needs. While you may or may not need to go that extreme, they do a great job rebuilding steering boxes in general. I've used them on 2 Jeeps, one CJ-8 and my MJ. P.S. when replacing your Steering box/pump make sure to bleed the s*** out of it BEFORE starting the engine. To do this you can put the front end up on jack stands, then with the engine OFF, slowly turn the steering wheel lock to lock about 100-300 times (no joke) adding fluid until you stop seeing bubbles and the system doesn't take any more fluid. If you don't bleed they system before starting up the engine you run the risk of cavitating your pump, meaning it gets ruined. Trust me, I learned this the hard way $$.

4 door Comanche in WA

My Cj8 was a daily driver / weekend wheeler for about 10 years, then I got tired of wheeling Sat, running to Shucks (now O'Rielly's) on Sundays to fix the broke stuff so I can get to work on Monday so little by little it turned into the thing it was. Most mods were designed to run trails a Reiter Trails (aka Reiter Pit) in Goldbar WA. Dana 60s f/r Detroit locker in front, spool rear, 6:17:1, Blueprinted and balance 5.0 EFI, T-18, Dana 300 with independent f/r hi low for digging around stuff! BTW rolls were mostly flops, were always at low speeds so no worries there. I do not expect to turn my Manche into a thing like that, but I would like to add a few things!

Naw I didn't roll over THERE lol... I did roll other places though, that's how I learned the limits of that Old Jeep! P.S. that was me in 2009
