  1. Lift it!
  2. Heat pump systems are fairly uncommon around here. The natural gas infrastructure is is everywhere and the gas is butt cheap right now. Oh: -12 air temp / -40 wind chill. The summer's high was 100 so that gives us a 112 degree swing from summer to winter.
  3. I have been using photobucket for as long as I can remember and I have never had any trouble with it. I only use my PC, though. I uploaded 2 just now as a test and it is as smooth as ever. I don't know about this case but in many cases it is the device settings, not the website.
  4. If you do not need new brake lines you can make the stocker front line fit for up to 4" of lift. That makes it an even more budget friendly lift
  5. I will throw out right up front that this is from various net postings and I have zero personal experience with the issue. There are many out there who swear that a stick with a 242 will wear out the transfer case prematurely. Whether it has to do with the drive line slack/power being applied so many times and the 242 having to absorb that every time or another issue is debated, as well. The constant pressure of the automatic is said to alleviate the slack/power cycle issue if there is one. If someone can would they please list all of the factory applications of a 242 with a manual tranny? I could not find any. There were so many combos available over the years to fit some pretty small market groups that the argument that 242's only came in "upscale" jeeps where the buyers would not want a stick seems kind of lame. That the engineers did not think that the combo would last as long does strike a cord as a reason to not make that combo available. Sure people have put this combo together and claimed to have zero issues...but I have seen people making the same claim about their running 37" tires on a D30. And it works right up until it doesn't. All of that being said I don't know whether many of us would put enough miles on a rig with this combo to notice a longevity issue in the first place.
  6. For those old enough to remember those days the XJ was recieved at least as negatively as the KL is today. No frame? Styling like a lightly taller Volvo 240 wagon? Tiny passenger car tires? Crappy engine choices? Even with its jeep-like grille the XJ was universally hated in the jeeper world and was considered a car, as well. The YJ (yuppie jeep to many) was also panned as being junk and "un-jeeply" upon introduction. I am certain many whined when a stop became standard equipment sometime in the 50's... I would not be surprised to see the KL with a revised front facia sooner than expected. They did the same thing to the gawd awful Compass and it helped sales of that re-badged Caliber so it may be in store for this re-badged Dart. All of the sales in the world won't help for long if Chrysler does not address the putrid dealer service reputation that they have, though.
  7. Any idea where that ad originally aired? I doubt that it was U.S. broadcast television (unless edited) even if ya think '96 was that much less PC.
  8. http://www.startribune.com/business/238581241.html To paraphrase from the new Cherokee post: We may not like it but Chrysler/Jeep must be doing something right as their mission is to sell new vehicles, not pacify cranky old jeepers like us.
  9. The conversion to 4wd is a common one. The easiest donor is an XJ Cherokee. The major components you will need from the donor are the front axle, driveshaft, transmission, transfer case, and shifter w/linkage. Your rear drive shaft will need to be shortened but you can find the appropriate length in the tech section. You cannot use the stock XJ shaft due to the wheelbase difference. Unbolt your tranny, bolt in the new tranny/t-case combo in its place. Unbolt your current front straight axle and the 4x4 front axle bolts right in. Cut a lil' hole in the floor for the shifter. Attach drive shafts. Go. Yes, that is pretty simplified version but you can find numerous in-depth articles with the search function. Near me I could source all of the parts for $300-$400 bucks. If they are plentiful near you then buying a junk or wrecked XJ is sometimes easier as it would have tons of extra little things that you might need and you can scrap the vehicle when you are done to get some cash back.
  10. Although some of us my not like it it looks like Jeep hit the nail on the head when it comes to completing their mission of selling new jeeps: http://www.autoblog.com/2013/12/29/jeep-cherokee-sales-rival-wrangler-after-two-months/?icid=maing-grid7%7Cmain5%7Cdl29%7Csec3_lnk4%26pLid%3D424937
  11. Most of toyo's V6's for 20 years were considered the same family but they do have some pretty significant differences. SOHC vs. DOHC for example. My dad put over 200,000 on an '87 B250 that he bought new with nothing but normal wear repairs. I put 230,000 on a '93 D350 the same way. The guy who was best man at my wedding bought an '89 C2500 new. His nephew still drives it with 350,000 on it. My MJ has 235,000 and from the history I can piece together has had nothing but normal wear items replaced. What makes a car great to some but not others is very subjective. I can point out that even the best reviews of the Camry/ES twins often talk about them being boring on several levels. In 2004 I took "hot laps" on a race track for a Car & Driver magazine comparo involving a M-B E320, BMW 535, Cadillac STS, and an ES330 and,as was the consensus of the 6 people on hand, found the ES to be outclassed and lame at anything other than basic transportation speeds. (For the record the voting finish was 535, STS, E320, & ES330.) I stopped counting at 65 cars owned ( only 13 of which were bought new, though) and I would not own a Camry whether it was the dressed up ES version that (from what I read) comes off of the exact same assembly line as a Camry or not. I guess that is why they make different cars.

  13. The Luxus E300 was an upgraded Toyota Camry. As such it is/was front wheel drive with the V6 engine sitting transverse, not inline. The engine and transmission are dead reliable. My Dad purchased an 89 V6 Camry with the 2.5 liter version of this engine. My son still drives the car. No problems in 150K miles. The AW4 is the rear wheel version of the Toyota A340 transmission. Toyota trucks used the rearwheel drive version of the A340 for many, many years. The 3.0 had numerous head gasket and even oiling issues. If you complained enough they quietly took care of the blow-ups and head gasket failures up to 100K or would extend your warranty. Much like the engine leaks/fires in the god-awful Previa and the short engine life of the 1.8L turbo Celica GT-s for a few years Toyota was masterful at spending ad money to quell negative press. Note your dad did not have a the 3.0. While the 2.5 & 3.0 ( some 3.0's were SOHC, others DOHC, for example. Toyota still considers them the same engine family despite such major differences) are similar they are not identical. Many problems often show up when you increase the bore without other upgrades. No one in my family buys Jap but my mother-in-law's 3.0 2000 Camry blew up due to an internal leak at just under 100K. She had it maintained at the dealership and had never missed a service requirement or deadline and they covered the blow-up with a small deductible.
  14. And back at ya. I use happy holidays, too. It includes everyone but more importantly for me it covers Christmas AND New Years in one tidy package.
  15. You certainly have a reputation but I have never heard of it referred to as spotless.... :rotfl2:
  16. Nothing special. Oh well, first one with a carburetor I've seen in Louisiana, and unless someone's VIN decoder says otherwise, it was listed as an 86. EDIT: Why do I bother? The throttle body injection looks like a carb. It is a round air horn but if you look into it there are one or more injectors inside. You aren't the first one to think it was a carb because of the similar appearance.
  17. Toyota quietly had a lot of problems with that engine both in the ES & Camry twins and the Taco/4runner.
  18. Yes! It has a brow! I think they look nekkid without them
  19. By the way: If you don't like someone or their posts but can't seem to garner up enough personal restraint to refrain from reading their posts or responding to them the forum has a tool to help you out. This has appeared in numerous threads that I read for as long as I can remember: This post is hidden because you have chosen to ignore posts by JeepcoMJ. View it anyway? Instead of going all emo all that anyone, including the thread starter, would have needed to do was to engage this feature for ojay or anyone else here. Then just never click "view it anyway." To perform this magic: Click your user name at the upper right corner near the "sign out" button. Select "manage ignore prefs" and add the name of who you wish to ignore. There are several options from there. ( Another tip: Have a slow 'net feed? You can just block the signature line of those pic heavy sigs that are really long from here, as well...) And goodbye to those that I assume I will not be seeing anymore after showing them this trick. :waving:
  20. great point
  21. Heck my big concern was how you found an open car wash with running water in Montana in December.... It was 18 degrees and we had 14" of snow here on the day I wrote that.
  22. WHAT HAPPENED TO MANDELA???? Seriously, though, I mentioned earlier that no one on here receives preferential treatment and that is a good thing. Pete and the mods do a fine job with that. As such I don't see a need for folks to make ultimatums about returning, announcing some return like it is a great event ( even when they had been posting during the supposed absence), or the need to give in to demands for special treatment. Renix encyclopedia or not if he leaves here he will still be on other boards posting the same info and answering the same questions. If you think he is going to stop his internet presence and the "status" he gets from people calling him a guru or encyclopedia because of something that happens on this site ya gotz another think coming.
  23. My daughters are 13, 10, & 9. First piece of advice to you youngsters on here: do not wait until you are 37 to start having kids and then get all girls... My suggestion? Gift cards of any sort. They will probably want to pick put their own stuff by those ages. iTunes cards are indeed a big hit for those who are electronically connected. (BTW: thirteen is not a preteen... I am sure that she will point this out to you if you say that where she can hear you....)
