Dodge Dekota gas tank replacement

Removed my tank and looking for a new replacement but confused. My tank has this 16 gallon tag on it. The truck is a long bed and the tank had 3 straps holding it in place and looks like this: -

Agreed. I'm gonna order a new tank from Amazon. Then I'm gonna try to make a stock Cherokee sending unit work by either modifying the tank or cutting the sending unit and adding length to it with fuel line extension. I will take pics and start a new thread if I'm successful. -

Why not used the Dekota tank and Dekota sending unit? -

Can you explain the '97+ swap? I at least want to make an informed decision on which way to go. My tank was full of rust flakes and gunk. I'm thinking seriously about modifying the bottom of the tank so it will work with a Cherokee sending unit. But if the '97+swap is a more overall beneficial modification, I may as well tackle that while I'm flopping around with this tank. -

Dang! I saw that in the back of my truck - along with a ton of other junk (they were using my MJ to haul scrap) - and gave it to a guy who comes around looking for scrap metal. I don't guess there is a current part sold in stores that will work? -

Dodge Dekota gas tank replacement

I’m not familiar with the ‘97+ swap but I have the factory 4.0 with the Renix system mated to the aw4/231. What to do? My sending unit is crap and it’s my understanding that new sending units will not fit in my tank? I bought one from Autozone that they said would fit, but it didn’t. Again, TIA for the advice. -

I read somewhere that there is a popular gas tank replacement for our Comanches. Seems like they were using a Dekota tank. Any help or advice will be appreciated as I am frustrated with trying to get a new sending unit to fit my tank. I’ve butchered up a new unit, rigging the pump into my old sending unit, but it’s working sporadically. TIA -

Thanks for the advice! I checked the power coming to the connector beside the tank and it has power (how much, I don’t know.) I cleaned the tank but I’m gonna drop it and clean it again. -

The description says that it's for "carbureted" engines which would explain why there is no fuel pump on it. Might be be an option if/when using an external pump. -

Awesome MJ build! I’m impressed with your attention to detail. Adding resistors to switches and modifying that rear wiper into duel duty locker switch....WOW! I may have missed it but what are you doing with your old fender flares? If you haven’t sold them, I am interested...

Right....."Renix" .... hahahaha. I do need one and gonna get a good'n! But I'm hearing my fuel relay click on when the ignition is on. Then it clicks off but no noise out of the fuel pump. All I can figure is a bad pump or bad wiring from the connection by the tank to the pump. -

While riding down to get the voltage checked it quit running. I don't hear the fuel pump running anymore. Can anyone give me a link to where the pressure regulator is on one of these Lenix motors? -

Any tricks or common problems as far as the alternator charging goes? -
Interesting. It would be worth an extra $400-$500 to have it shipped to your front door and ready to bolt in. I was thinking of getting a junk yard 8.8, spring perches and an Air Locker but then I’d have to deal with prepping it, having the Locker installed and having the perches welded on. All of that takes time and time is money.....

I got it running today! Drove it around a little but the brakes need something done to them before I feel really safe. Maybe there is a booster leak or maybe I simply need to ride in it a while and wear the rust off the calipers. The engine and transmission, OTOH, are working PERFECTLY! 4WD wasn't working but I imagine that has more to do with the vacuum crap than the 231. Anyway, that fuel pump was toast. And y'all were right - there was no way to get that unit in the tank. I wound up taking the the parts I needed off the new new sending unit and installing them on the existing one. It works and so does the fuel gauge. Had to clean the sending unit plumbing up a lot! That truck has been sitting for at least 3 years so there are plenty of cobwebs to shake off. One problem i noticed was the alternator. I took the battery cable off and it died. Unless y'all know of something I should check first, I'll be putting a new alternator on next. -

Holding it beside the old one and they look "almost" the same. Looks like it doesn't go into the tank as far (toward the driver side) but just as deep. No good? -

Speaking of sickness.... fuel pump clogged.... the guy here at Autozone claims to have this entire sending unit - pump included - in stock. Who knew? -

Why are you cutting on the tank? Also, looks like you had a stick shift and transformed to an Automatic. If so, are you willing to sell the ax15?
