Brake pedal goes to the floor!!! Need help
nitroxsteve replied to istaywikkid's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
What was it doing before you replaced all the parts? -
By chance do you have a picture of it? I too, am a easy wheeler and i like shiny stuff so a nice chrome exhaust tip will go on. I also have a header and a flowmaster 50 cutoff under the bed, so routing it back further and out is what I'm after I don't have a picture and the truck is up at my house in WV so I won't see it again until Christmas. I will get a picture of it then if you still need it.

My truck is like that and I have no problems but I stay on easy trails.

I think all xj had d30 up front.

Anyone seen this snorkle?

And there is only 11 remaining better act fast! $$$$$$$$ -
The problem with the oil in the air box is caused by the crank case vent tube being plugged. Replace the small tube from the rear of the valve cover and that should take care of that oil. As far as the calve cover I would just put a quality gasket on the original valve cover and call it good. I have heard of the valve cover upgrade but never understood what was wrong with the original. My 88 is dry after replacing the crank case vent tube and the gasket.

I first notice it about a week ago driving at highway speeds, so i had it towed home and it sat in my driveway, after replacing the thermostat in , let the air out of the system and it stated to overheat at city driving speeds. How i know its overheating because coolant was forcing its way out of where the line attachs to the coolant tankon the bottom and the gauge needle was in the red. Is it still forcing coolant out of the tank? If you are loosing any pressure the coolant will boil and cause overheating. With the temp all the way in the red it should never spill coolant.

Describe it a little more. When is it overheating? Driving at speed? Setting in traffic? Idling in the driveway? How do you know it's overheating? Is it boiling over or is the gage telling you? When did the problem start?

How Bad Really is the BA10?
nitroxsteve replied to joester1908's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The only part of the drivetrain in my 88 that is original is the ba10 the engine has been rebuilt the rear end replaced. I have also changed the tail shaft housing to convert it to 4wd and it works fine. I think that the problem that caused short life on the BA was the drain and fill plugs are oddball and most of them never got serviced. When purchasing an xj or mj I would only concern myself with it shifting properly at the time of purchase. Not what it is equipped with. -
Loud Roar from Underside
nitroxsteve replied to Slimjater's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
the 2wd drive shaft has some funky outer tube connected by rubber that has been known to cause vibrations. If this is the case you can only fix it by replacing the drive shaft. Keep this in mind if you remove the u-joints and the look good. My 2wd had this problem and it was fived with a bew shaft. -
mudding = my carb fubar
nitroxsteve replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If the problem is water leaking in around the wing nut just seal the wing nut wit silicone. You will need to reseal it every time you open it but it will work. Also remember your not messing up youcarb you are messing up your engine and running the chance of hydro locking it. If you are going to continue swamping the truck water proof it or set some money back for more junk yard engines. -
mudding = my carb fubar
nitroxsteve replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If your getting mud in the carb I would be more concerned with mud (dirt and water) that is getting into the engine through the carb. Do you have the factory air cleaner or an open element? -
In my experiance you want mud to clear out of the tires and snow to stick to the tire for best traction. Thats why a mud tire does not make very good snow tires. You said the truck has snow tires. Are they real snow tires or just A/T or M/T? Also you say it won't spin the tires enough to clean them out snow = easy on the skinny pedal. I know there are times you need to hit a hill hard to get up it but thats usually much deaper than 4" in my experience.

Bending Dana 30 back to correct position
nitroxsteve replied to Jacob Ochs's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Okay that's good so I have a chance of getting it. Could you go a little more in depth? Was the axle on the truck when you did it? Hey its already messed up what do you have to loose. -
Bending Dana 30 back to correct position
nitroxsteve replied to Jacob Ochs's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If it were me I would get a complete D30 from the jy for about $100 and put the guts from the old axle inside. This would let me do all of the truss work while keeping the truck on the road. -
I wouldn't worry about it 3 months is not that long. Also if someone starts it for you make sure they warm it all the way up including getting the oil up to temp. Repeated short start ups without reaching full temp can cause moisture to build up in the engine and exhaust system.

Tire balance? -
I feel the same way about my truck!

after the paint project is lift?
nitroxsteve replied to redwolf624's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The same lift works for 2wd and 4wd so no problems there. I would go ahead and install the front axle for the 4wd conversion when you do the lift. This will keep you from doing everything twice -
About to buy my first comanche.
nitroxsteve replied to Dom U's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Its normal for the Renix engines to turn over a little before starting. I'm not sure about it being hard to get up to 35 you'll need to evaluate the power problem more. Your probably correct about the speedo cable. Were you trying to shift out of 4x4 sitting still? If so try shifting it while moving. 4x4 lamp could be a bulb but I wouldnt worry too much about that, you don't realy need it the shifter sticks up to let you know its in 4x4. Brake light could be the switch on the parking brake or low fluid level in the master cylinder. Check the floors for rust they are bad to rust from the inside out. -
Before I pulled anything apart I would start with the basics. Put some oil in it and check the oil pressure while cranking. Then do a compression test. Was the distributor cracked or the cap cracked? If the only thing that happened is the distributor failure that would have caused your back firing. I have never heard of a distributor failing like you described so I'm not sure what could have caused it. Just don't go crazy pulling stuff apart until you have checked the basics first. You may just need a distributor and an oil change.

Improving headlights
nitroxsteve replied to nitroxsteve's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I installed the new harness and it made an improvement with the old bulbs. More white light instead of yellow. I then installed a new set of silverstars and its a huge differance over the old lights. -
