  1. think "upgrade" if you need a booster.
  2. Did you replace the hose at the same time? Flush the system?
  3. Sounds like you're on the right track.
  4. Likely a combination of both.
  5. How does it run and idle after it starts? The 2.46 is really sensitive to bad ground issues. Most notable is the ground point at the firewall. If you haven't already done so, remove the strap from the firewall, scrape to bare metal and reinstall the cable. Do the same at the head where the cable attaches. They are also prone to intake manifold leaks at the head. Make sure the bolts are snug. Also prone to rotten vacuum hoses to the intake manifold. See the pic below.
  6. CRUISER'S MOSTLY RENIX TIPS CRUISER’S VALVE COVER MOD NOVEMBER 17, 2015 SALAD 51 COMMENTS Most early and even later Renix 4.0s could be bothered by excessive oil in the air cleaner box. A fix from my old days as Service Manager at a Jeep dealership follows. Information was provided to me from a buddy at JeepTech during those days. I don’t believe it ever came out in a Technical Service Bulletin. Remove the valve cover and turn it over. Next, remove the fluted tubes that are now facing you by removing three screws on each. Chop 1 inch off each of them. Then, drill a half inch hole as shown in the photo. The flat side of the flute that’s closest to the edge of the valve cover. Clean and de-burr/sand all rough edges nicely, clean with solvent, and reinstall. Don’t be concerned about the chintzy gaskets that will probably crumble into oblivion when you remove the fluted tubes. They can go back together without gaskets. Here’s a handy video from my friend Brendan showing more detail.
  7. Inspect the "line" to the MAP closely. Best to remove it and make sure you can blow through it. Here's a good looking vacuum line I found the other day. Looked great. I removed it and couldn't blow through it because it was melted closed on the bottom. My buddy was happy because he bought the Jeep for a real good price thinking the engine was bad. This is all it was.
  8. Original injectors. How does the oil feel if you rub it between your fingers?
  9. Just another frumpy sedan....
  10. They're special. I have some.
  11. Injectors may be leaking fuel into the engine while parked. Does your oil smell like gasoline?
  12. CRC makes a product called Freeze-Off. Aerosol can. Works better than PB etc. WD-40 just plain sucks on rusty stuff.
  13. To access the lower bolts, just remove the air cleaner assembly. Easy way to find vacuum leaks. At idle, spray carb cleaner around suspect areas. If there's a vacuum leak, the idle will immediately change. check out the integrity of this hose.
  14. Make it easy. CRUISER'S MOSTLY RENIX TIPS RENIX OIL FILTER TO SAE FILTER JANUARY 3, 2016 CRUISER54 9 COMMENTS Tired of having a poor selection of oil filters for your Renix Jeep? Limited availabilty a pain for you? 20mm threads? We don’t need mumblemeter threads on our oil filters. Here’s a simple mod that allows you to use the very popular SAE threaded oil filters which are more readily available. The old standard 3/4″ SAE thread. You can purchase a new oil filter nipple from the dealer for under $10 and never be bothered again. Part number 53007563AB. It’s the one on the left. Or, grab one off a 91 and later XJ at the junkyard. Be forewarned though. You need a 7/8 wrench to remove a Renix nipple, but a 15/16 wrench for the later style. And just in case you need to replace your oil filter adapter o-rings, here’s a handy guide. Oil Filter Adapter O-Ring Sizes 87-90 Renix Model O-rings 0.799 x 0.103 AS568 size -117 1.296 x 0.139 AS568 size -219 2.484 x 0.139 AS568 size –230 Dealer Part Numbers for Renix. 15. That head gasket seep won't pose any future issues. Look real close at the bottom of the distributor while you're at it. As suggested, it would be good to degrease the engine at some point and monitor any leaks after that. Do not get the TPS wet!!
  16. That^^ scares me a bit. I'm afraid it might snap off.
  17. Reuse the sender. It's better than the chinese knock off crap available new. Use Permatex #2 on the threads. While the valve cover is off, do this: http://cruiser54.com/?p=131
  18. Fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail.
  19. Just making sure it's full. Pull the front driveshaft and see if anything is loose in it.
  20. First, score a 258 crank and rods. Rebuild your 4.0 with those. Search on the web. "Poor Man's Stroker".
  21. Transfer case fluid level and condition?
  22. Rear main seal leaks are not common on the 4.0. MISDIAGNOSED rear main seal oil leaks ARE!
  23. It almost got crushed!!
  24. They were quite good right out of the gate. I drove this one a lot. 4.6 with a Paxton supercharger and programmable fuel injection. Belonged to Jeep Racing.
