1. I wouldn't worry about it. They just might not be seated and a couple miles under the belt just might do it. If the rings were stuck a couple drops of oil wouldn't raise the compression that much. Ive seen engines that had been sitting for 20 years when first fired up would darn near empty the pan they smoked so bad. Run them awhile and they cleared up.
2. Nope. And I pretty much went thru everything. That's how I found them two posted above. Guess I'm just gonna have to go drag it out of the shed and take some. :dunno:
3. 1945 WLA

I didn't think about historic plates. I got three from NM. One car, one truck and a motorcycle one. And one from Co.

7. Finally got around to pulling the engine today. In my lifetime I have probably pulled a couple hundred engines. Cummins and Caterpillers from Kenworths and peterbuilt's. Throw a couple Macks and IHC in there too. Take the two hardest jobs and put them together was not as hard as pulling this sucker. I would have loved to watch the guy putting this together and just see how he did it. I almost think he put the bare block in first and then added the rest of it. Getting that sucker out was a B*tch. I didn't want to remove it from the trailer and then have to load it back up again for the trip to the crusher. I don't think it would have made any difference anyway. First you need a cherry picker adequate for the job, No wimpy engine puller here. Then you cut everything out that would get in the way. Took half an hour from the time I started to get this far, what with things catching, hanging up and just generally being difficult to get along with. Still coming. Out. What should have took 10 minutes at the most, took over an hour. Now for the clean up and prep. Got some ideas on how to do it and make a better and easier job of it than what he had done.
8. The dogs in the transmission are worn, needs replaced. I have a '90 AX15 doing the same thing in 2nd. I just live with it rather than pull and fix it.
9. Most any auto parts store will loan one for nothing. Cheaper than buying something you'll only use every couple years.
10. How would you know? Have you ever let your trans get so low on lube? LOL. It absolutely amazes me how many times we see this crap. Buy it. Drive it. Never check anything. Post on the forum when we have noises/issues. OP, don't take this personal but this stuff needs to be said!! It's not directed at you in particular, but to all those who do the same. A good lube, oil and filter change includes checking critical fluid levels/conditions on the trans, transfer case and diffs. Should be SOP on the purchase of any vehicle.
11. Welcome to the site. Sometime when you're not busy cramming, drop down for a cold one.
12. The OD is to small. It's 1 inch. Has to be 1 1/8. No such animal that I can find with that OD and ID. Me neither. That's why I shimmed it.
13. The OD is to small. It's 1 inch. Has to be 1 1/8.
14. So how did the elk taste? You did salvage it didn't you?
15. Now you tell me.
16. Trying to put a 1993 AX15 into a 1990 MJ, 4.0. Hit every parts store in town and could not find a bearing that would work. Got the bearing tool loaner from the parts house and went back to the JY where I got the AX15 from, was going to pull the old bearing and use it. NO luck. It was gone. Bit the bullet and went to the dealership. For $46.94 this is what I got. Yes, I ordered two of them. When I went to try it for fit I found the ID was correct but the OD was a bit loose. Being a 50 mile round trip to the dealer and getting a little annoyed I decided to go with what had. Take a hose clamp, Cut the screw off. Perfect fit. Well, close anyway. Got everything back together and discovered I had 5 speeds in reverse and one speed forward. Crawled underneath and checked. Sure enough I had the tranny in backwards. Trying to make up my mind now whether to reverse the tranny or to move the steering colum to the back of the cab facing to the rear and turn the seat around. Decisions, decisions. :???:  EDIT; Done. I'm getting to old for this chet. I can get down and under a Jeep real easy. It's getting back out from under it and back on my feet that's hard. I figure another 15-20 years I'm giving it up. Take up parachute testing or something.
17. Has he thought about the possibility of having the TG actually work, with a compartment behind it?
18. It looks OK to me. That is the frame part the roll bar brackets bolt to.
19. Last time I moved I sold a couple. But NOT my babies.
20. question on this compressor, vacuum pump, anyone that's familiar with them. Can it be used both for the vacuum needed by the diesel and as a compressor? At the same time? This will be the last post in this thread. I have started another thread under 'Your Projects' titled 'Diesel conversion MJ'
21. Not having anything better to do in my spare time I am going to install a Nissan SD-22 diesel engine into a 1986 rust free MJ. The engine is currently resting in the engine bay of a rust free but beat all to hell '84 XJ. Some of the hard stuff is already done by the PO but his workmanship leaves something to be desired. Loose wires all over the place, welds that look like some kid had been playing with a wad of chewing gum. wires wrapped with cellophane tape, etc, etc. He had the right idea and did come up with some clever solutions but his craftsmanship left some to be desired.Hopefully between his start and my finishing it will be a truck to rely on and be proud of. Since film is cheap, especially if you're using a digital camera there will be plenty of pics. Also I will be asking many questions of the diesel gurus out there about stuff that is sure to come up of which I am unfamiliar with. The donor, 1986 XJ The engine, Nissan SD-22 The recipient, 1986 MJ I'm empty. Fill me.
22. Boy was my mind of on that one. It is not a WD. It's a WLA. The military version with the blackout lites and tommy gun mount on the front fork and radio. 45 ci made in 1945. Geez am I losing it. I do have a pic of it in the puter. See if I can find it, or just go take another. one. '78 HD I can't get anything to upload. Just going to take some more and start over.
23. Got several. They're packed away. Be easier and quicker to take a couple more. Will post them ASAP.
24. Nope. Off that '84 XJ I got for the diesel conversion. You should see some of the other Mickey Mouse crap this guy came up with. The exhaust hook up for the turbo looks like something a drunk plumbers apprentice might have come up with. In his worst nightmare.
