whats my best option for engine
jimoshel replied to 86customanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
90 was Renix, and 96 was was weird screwed up year for electronics. jimoshel- I've noticed that even with all your 2.5s, none of them had an AX-4. 2.5/AX-4 combo received 3.55 gearing and was somewhat a dog on it. Granted, I think my 2.5 is on its way out... but I'm thinking of going 3.73 axle gearing and rebuilding the motor with a generous bore, and a cam if I can find one. That's true. They all have the 4:11. Just proves the ole adage, Proper GEARING gets the job done. -
whats my best option for engine
jimoshel replied to 86customanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Am I the only odd ball in this crowd or what? I feel the 2.5 is very adequate for a daily driver. No, I wouldn't want to pull a horse trailer or a load of hay over Wolf Creek Pass with one but I feel it's more than adequate for a DD. And despite my advanced years I still put my foot in it so don't accuse me of being a 40MPH old fart going down the inside lane with my blinkers on. I sill run a '65 GTO on the strip and I have a timing slip on my '68 Caddy at 112MPH. Unfortunately it's from The Colorado Highway Patrol and not a race track. So the point I'm trying to make is Them 2.5 engines are OK. However if you have the need for more power the question is how deep are your pockets? What can you do your self or what will need to be farmed out? IMHO the cheapest and probably best would be to swap for a 4.0. If that's not good enough for ya, go with a 455 Buick.Turbo charged of course. -
Only build working bumpers. Not looking bumpers. However you have put a bug up my a,,,ah,,er,,,ear so gonna see what I can come up with.

I remember when they used canister oil filters and used sanitary napkins because they were cheaper and did a better job of filtering. Truck stops carried them and you would see big, burly, hairy assed truckers buying sanitary napkins by the carton. And believe me, no matter how bad you may have wanted to, ya DIDN'T laff.

Frame stiffeners (going 1 ton's)
jimoshel replied to Rokhound's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Since the frames are hollow, why not fill it with cement? Stand the truck up on end, cut a hole in the end of each rail and 'fill 'er up' :fool: -
No hurry. I got enough other modes of transportation so I ain't walkin and I got enough unfinished projects to keep me busy. Does anybody ever finish a project?

It's the first-second shift rail. What upload service are you using? I'm useing PhotoBucket. One time I can upload with no problem and the naxt time I try nothing. Would like to find something more reliable. Great pics, and thanks for the responses.

That's the one. Snapped off at the shift pin. The gears, syncros shift forks are in excellent shape so I would like to replace it. But not for the price the dealer wants. Now if I can just find one. Thanks Correy

Does anyone no whether the No 1 shift rail in a AX5 will swap with one from a AX4 or AX15? And don't ask for a pic. Ive been trying for over an hour to upload one. If you know what I'm talking about you won't need on.
-
I need the No1 shift rail for a AX5. Anybody? The AX4 will work.

They also made Jim Dandy welders.

Thinking maybe this thread should be in 'Projects'. But then, that's not the way it started out.Got to looking at all the pieces laying around and decided it wouldn't hurt to install some new bushings, I mean would it? Quick browse thru EBay, PayPal, they should be here in a week.

JUST FRED A cop stops a Jeep for traveling faster than the posted speed limit, so he asks the Jeeper his name. 'Fred,' he replies. 'Fred what?' the officer asks. 'Just Fred,' the man responds. The officer is in a good mood and thinks he might just give the Jeeper a break and, write him out a warning instead of a ticket. The officer then presses him for the last name. The man tells him that he used to have a last name but lost it. The officer thinks that he has a nut case on his hands but plays along with it. 'Tell me, Fred, how did you lose your last name?' The Jeeper replies, 'It's a long story, so stay with me.' I was born Fred Johnson. I studied hard and got good grades. When I got older, I realized that I wanted to be a doctor. I went through college, medical school, internship, residency, and finally got my degree, so I was Fred Johnson, MD. After a while I got bored being a doctor, so I decided to go back to school. Dentistry was my dream! Got all the way through School, got my degree, so then I was Fred Johnson, MD, DDS. Got bored doing dentistry, so I started fooling around with my assistant and she gave me VD, so now I was Fred Johnson, MD, DDS, with VD. Well, the ADA found out about the VD, so they took away my DDS.. Then I was Fred Johnson, MD, with VD. Then the AMA found out about the ADA taking away my DDS because of the VD, so they took away my MD leaving me as Fred Johnson with VD. Then the VD took away my Johnson, so now I am Just Fred.' The officer walked away in tears, laughing

She can ride in my Jeep anytime, although I'm not sure the seat will slide back far enough. :rotf:

After getting smarted up this morn I went out to do something useful. Change a broken right front coil spring on a '88 MJ, 2.5, AX4 2WD. The donor being one of the aforementioned '85XJ'S. After getting the front axle dropped and the spring out on both vehicles it occurred to me that I was half there in converting the '88 to 4WD. Checked ratios. Both 3:73. The TC and AX5 were already out of the donor. The driveshaft I'll worry about when I get to it, which should be sometime tomorrow afternoon. Won't be the first one I've cut, welded. How do things get so far out of hand? Was just gonna swap a spring was all. :dunno:

Why would anyone waste good money going to a trade school to learn mechanics when they can find everything worth knowing right here? :smart: :dunno:

That was a informative trip. There were three D35's and one D44. No AMC'S. Apparently I need another book. Gotta learn to quit assuming and check more often.
-
Was just going by the book. It says all 84-86's used the AMC. Didn't use the D35 until "87. Better put my shoes on and go check.
-
I'm stripping out a couple '84-'85 Cherokee's getting ready to send them to the shredder. Thinking about saving the drive train for 4WD conversions but not familiar with the AMC 7's. Are they any good? are they junk? Anybody want one? Jim :dunno:

In the OLD days we'ed just hang a 100Watt bulb alongside the engine and shut the hood.More than adequate. With all the crap crammed under their now you'ed burn something up. Don't get me started.
