When I look for axle assemblys half the time the tag is missing. Seems that's the second thing gets removed on a vehicle. Owners manual is first. Suggest any one going axle shopping learn how to remove cover and count teeth or how to turn axle while counting turns of pinion. And the difference between open and posi.
RE:Ford Explorer rear.
Is the lug pattern the same as the MJ? If not what do you do for spare? Carry two? On one of my MJ'S there is a 5 lug D60 in the rear and a 6 lug D44 in front. Rather than mess with 2 spares I'm scrapping both axles and installing a matched set.
Might want to think about getting a Chevy S10 Tranny. They're a dime a dozen, as compared to MJ's. Only problem I see might be the drive shaft to the TC.
If you like to tune your suspension, or just like to play, use 3/4 or 7/8 threaded rod. Be sure and cover the threads under the bushings with steel tubing. Use double nuts so you can lock them.
If you really want to hear ticking pinging noises, listen to a 9 cylinder Lycoming, Continental or Pratt whitney cooling down. Those are radial, air cooled aircraft engines, boy.
Man,,,You do THAT with anticipation,,,what the heck ya gonna do with gratification?
Any body got a fire-heat proof banana? I know where there's a tail pipe I want a insert it in. :D
A 2X4 between the axle and bottom leaf is about as simple as ya can get. Make it long enough to reach from the back bumper to the front axle it will also help reduce spring wrap up.
Just looked. Can't realy see anything that could be called a 'clip' The A/C body is held on by two bolts.. The only ones I saw were for the 2.8, but hers is a 2.5. If you cud post a pic or even a drawing?
Just checked. The tail pipes are different, seems to be the location of the XJ gas tank, The Xj tail pipe goes straight back and points down. The MJ bends behind the axle and exits out the side. The exhausts are identical from the ex manifold to past the cat.Between the Cat and the muffler is 2 types. One is a short pipe, approx 8". The other is a longer pipe about 14", It looks like the short pipe is original and the longer pipe was used when a after market muffler was installed. This seems to be the case for both XJ and MJ.
They're the same back to the cat. After that ???????? The pipe over the axle might be the same. There's about a foot diff in body lengths and that diff is either taken up by the short pipe between the cat and the muffler or they're the same past the muffler with the diff in length made up by the tail pipe. I'll check in the AM and report back. It's dark out there and I'm afraid of the boogy man
I would like to get a hold of the production numbers for these vehicles. Compare them to what we have. I've seen them before, somewhere, but was'nt interested then and don't remember where.
I've got a couple '86's in the yard.Nobody has to buy anything, I'll donate it. Just let me know what she's talking about. I expect re embursement for postage.
