As far as I know, most transfer cases only have 4 positions. 2H,4H,N,4L. As to what position is what, If it's laying on the ground turn the input shaft. See what the output shaft does. If it doesn't move that's neutral. If it turns at the same speed that's high. Turns at half,approx, is low. If it's still in the vehicle and you can't figure it out, I dunno.

He said D30 which I thot was the front axle. That was the data I sent as copied from the 1989 FSM. Not familiar with the the 8.8.

The point I was trying to make was that a couple of the $500 MJ'S I drove home was in better, cleaner shape than the one for $2500.

Got hit in the head with a 4.0 fan blade. Killed the motor instantly. Fan blade was a total. :doh:

Saw a MJ on a dealers lot yesterday. First one I ever saw at a used car lot. Went in for a better look. 1988, 4.0, auto, column shift, LB, 2wd, No rust, minor dings and scratches, fair interior. Asking $2495. If it's still there in a couple weeks I'm going to offer them $1400 for it. The most I've ever paid for a MJ was $500, and I drove it home. The 3 XJ'S I got yesterday, I got for donor's. After getting them home and looking, they're to nice to part so I'm going to sell-trade them as running cars. Anybody got a MJ to trade for ?

Tighten the drive pinion gear shaft nut with 285N*m (210 ft lbs)torque. Do the preload check. Not printing it here as you already have it. $800 it's yours. Or trade for a MJ.No knocks, no rust, no leaks, no dents, I wouldn't hesitate to drive it to Missouri.

For the pre load, just snug it up tight. No play. For final assembly Minimum, 210ft. lbs.

Trade ya an XJ for it.

Got the two '89's from one seller. The '88 from another.

Try to add a little class to a group and what do ya get? Actually B4 I started using RTV I would scrape up chewing gum, fresh, from the sidewalk and use it. :doh:

Anybody that does much work on their Jeeps, and other unworthy vehicles, has probably come across this problem. You remove a component and now you have a opened line or fitting, Gas, trans cooler line, A/C line, etc., I have had very good luck using red RTV to plug these holes. Just squeeze a big gob in and let set. Removes very easy, comes out in one big gob and is a lot easier to use than stuffing paper or rags into them. Keeps the dirt out of them lines, and components. FREE MJ TAIL LIGHTS, I have one set of MJ tail lights in exceptionally fine shape I will give absolutely free to who ever shows up at my door in the next 30 minutes. It is now 9;05, the clock is running. 9;40, Guess nobody wanted 'em.

I crawled under neath and wire brushed the threads as best I could. Soaked them with penetrating oil and let set overnight, then used an impact wrench set at a medium setting. You want to vibrate them out. Not twist the head of.

Look at the 2 straps holding the gas tank. If there are 2 studs on each strap then it had a factory installed plastic shield. If there are no studs then it didn't. If you haven't gotten a satisfactory answer tomorrow let me know and I can send a couple pics. Can't now cause it's dark outside and I'm afraid of the boogy man.

I do not refer to my back yard as a 'junkyard' I prefer 'a temporary storage area for vehicles with a possible future desirability'. :typing:
