  1. WOW! Never would have believed it. Thanks guys. Jim
  2. 1989 4.0l. Putting the head gasket on I noticed there are no locating pins or bushings on the block. I am having a hard time believing Jeep, or any manufacturer would omit these. Might explain why the old gasket failed. Did or did not Jeep use them? Jim
  3. :agree: especially "Wolf creek pass"
  4. Obviously that is not the complete form. The original form had blanks after the dimension words and you were supposed to fill them in with what you wanted on your custom Jeep and then turn the form in to the dealer. The factory would then turn your dream into reality. The project failed when all the "good faith" deposit checks bounced. :rotf:
  5. Old man shuffling down the street sees a young boy sitting on the curb crying his heart out. Old fella approach's and says 'Hey, hey young feller. What's wrong? It's a beautiful day out. Sun's shining. birds singing. Nothing can be all that bad. Whats wrong?" Young fella replies " Sniff,,,sob,,, I'm crying cause I can't do to the girls what the big boys are doing." Old guy sits down beside him and starts crying his heart out.
  6. Horse walks into a bar. Orders a JD and branch. Bartender says "that'll be $10" Horse pays and sips his drink. Bartender, wanting to start conversation, says " Don't see many horses in here' Horse replies " At $10 a shot it's going to be a long time before you see another one."
  7. The wiggle (UJoint) that lets the column tilt is loose. You want to tighten the 4 bolts, if I remember right, that holds it together B4 any of the bearings fall out. Requires removing the steering wheel, locking plate and turn signal assembly.
  8. Brakes interfere with going fast. Leave 'em off.
  9. That list just has to many in accuracies to be used for a final word.
  10. How do you know the tank is empty? Put a one gallon gas can, full, into the back of the truck and drive it until it dies. Put in the gallon spare and head for the nearest station. Then see how much it takes to fill it. Or, drain the tank at home. Then refill it from measured containers. Edit;SDak? Better make it a five gallon can.
  11. Level ground is sufficient. As long as the master cylinder is elevated above the slave.
  12. Got the head all cleaned and ready to bolt back on. '89 4.0.Probably be my last valve job. Just not doing the work like I used to so why not sell everything. Head gasket was leaking between 4 and 5 cylinders and edge of block. Was a b*tch getting the left rear bolt out. Stud stuck up to far to use a short socket and wasn't enough room for a deep well. Finally used a Sawall and cut the top inch off. Did a 3 angle job on the valves. They really didn't need it. I just figured since I had the head off, why not? Seats were hard. Had to dress the stone 3 times but got every thing ready to go back. Not being real familiar with the 4.0 engine looking for suggestions on what to use in reassembly. Know about the Fram oil filter so skip it. Is a 195 thermostat the best to use? Book recommends it but seems a little high to me. Spark plugs? Exhaust manifold cracked in two places. Remember reading about headers on here a couple months back. Can't find it now. Any comments appreciated. Jim
  13. Sounds like you've just gotten so involved in it that your overlooking something obvious. The old 'can't see the trees for the forest syndrome.' Maybe if you just backed off and let it sit for a spell, or surely there is a Jeep nut near by you could appeal to for help. And don't burn it. That small feeling of satisfaction will be replaced with regret after you cool down. I don't know how many vehicles I've bought at junk price because the owner had problems and couldn't fix them. One was as simple as switching plug wires. And one was out of gas. Good luck. Jim
  14. I've had several cops tell me they would rather have a shoot out with a known desperado than have to deal with a domestic situation.
  15. I have owned and rode Harleys, Indians, Triumphs, BSA, BMW, Moto Guzzi, Ariel, and Honda.Every one of them had something special about them, both good and bad. I think the highlight of my biking was in 1961. Rode a Moto Guzzi around the Mediterranean ocean, passing thru every country that touched it.Took 35 days. I was on a 30 day leave. At one time if I was going a far distance I would take a Jap bike over a Hog because of reliability. That has changed, partly thanks to Rice Burners making Harley get off their pedestal and improve their product. IMHO Harley has 2 things no other bike has. That throaty, rumbling exhaust and class.
  16. Getting old? Tell me about it. At one time a buddy would drop by and say' Let's go for a ride" I would reply ' Lets go" Now I study the sky and if there's a cloud anywhere i worry about rain. This from a guy rode a Harley from Las Vegas to Pueblo in a snowstorm.(When I was younger) Built from various parts an pieces but titled as a '74 Pan. Also rode a 750 Honda when I broke my leg and it was in a cast. The Harley was just to heavy to hold. Ran a rope from the shift lever to the gas cap so I could shift it. My prize now is a 1927 JD. Fully restored.
  17. Canada is a country? Dern. always thought it was just a big *ssed Northern state. :Canadaflag:
  18. If it's 4wd the hub will stick out from the wheel center. If it's 2wd it won't. Will be flat similiar to the rear drum, wheel. Keep bugging him. Maybe he went on vacation, or the cops nailed him and will really have to sell to raise bail. Correction. The hub will still stick out but will be more cone shaped and not as fat. Gotta stop doing anything B4 I've had my first cup of coffee.

    Coolant leak

Found out why I was going thru coolant and truck was overheating. Leaking head gasket. Tonite I got the engine pretty well stripped and tomorrow the head will be coming off. '89 MJ, 4.0l.
  20. Hokey Smokey, Damn sure,,er I mean my goodness, yes it is.
  21. Looking for suggestions, opinions and or friendly advice on cleaning brake fluid on the fuse panel. I caught it before any damage was done so now just gotta clean it up. I'm thinking cover the floor mat with plastic, remove the fuses and spray it with a cleaner. 409, brake cleaner, CRC electrical cleaner, etc. Then either hose it down or just let it air dry. Comments?
  22. Looked at the S10's I got. 5 S10's 2 different shaped arms.Might try taking the MJ arm and hitting the JY and maybe, if your lucky, might find one. Also might try heating and bending the arm. That can be tricky so unless you or who ever does it knows what they're doing, probably shouldn't try it. The steering box is a GM so don't confine your search to S10. Look at other GM models. Willing to bet there is a factory one out there that will work. Just finding it. Also it's possible this has been done before. Don't restrict your search to CC, altho it's the best place to start. Check out NAXJA and some of the after market sites. Good luck. Jim
  23. We think alike in that respect. I'll do mechanic work all day rather than a hour on rust. Don't sell the 6 cyl short. It's not the power house the 360 is but for a DD and dependability your not gonna beat it.
  24. Just from the pics it looks like a nice truck. I havea hard time accepting the prices being asked for Jeep trucks. I wonder if they're getting their asking price. In 1991 or 2, don't remember for sure, I bought a 1977 J20 for $75. It wouldn't start and the guy got tired messing with it. I got it home, put the plug wires back where they should be and been driving it since.360, 4spd. In 2003 I bought a cherry 1983 J10 for $800. Runs great. 360, auto. Rust free.In 1971 I bought a new 1970 J10 from the dealer. $4.000. The '71's were coming in and he wanted to get rid of it. The biggest problems with the J series, IMHO, is they leak, mostly around the windshield and to a lessor extent, the doors. I have 7 J's now. 5 have rusty floorboards. 1 rusted out. I can only suggest you go look at it and if you like it, then get it. If you have a specific question about them ask. No guarantee but I'll see if I can help. Jim
  25. This is the most depressed I've been since I heard about Custer. Think I would get another cab and rebuild.
