You beat me to it, I was going to recommend exactly what you are doing with the bushing... -
There's a panel back there!??

Installed a Touchscreen Headunit
zomeizter replied to MississippiComanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If one is into knockoffs, all good, but do not expect high quality components inside or studio sound output. These things are adequate to some, and that's totally cool but some of us are not rich enough to buy the cheaper stuff. You really get what you pay for, and about the remotes for the headunits, they come in handy sometimes, like when you're chillin' by the bonfire beside the jeep in the middle of nowhere and you're the DJ... OP, looks like this fits your needs and does what you need it to, enjoy it and the road ahead -
I run the Barnes brace on my XJ and the steering improvement is greatly noticeable...

I should also have some leftover from the axle swap, if you need more than one pair, I can start looking for them...

Aftermarket fog light wiring
zomeizter replied to Master7122's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My 'manche has the switch connector for the fogs right behind the switch cover of the cluster bezel, I gather the wiring goes out to the engine compartment and there should be another connector there which would be the one to mate to a fog lamps harness, correct? If so, does anyone have a pic of what that connector looks like and/or the whereabouts? -
I run the valve, did a bunch of ''testing'' with the linkage at different positions to dial in the best rear brakes' behavior with a loaded and empty bed. The things I modified on the system are the MC, I used one off a Ford F100 with a slightly bigger bore, 1 inch IIRC and the discs equipped on the 8.8 swap...Nowhere near the stopping power of hydroboost but I can lock them 31s on steelies easily, I reckon one gets lucky sometimes :)

Swapping Bulbs for LEDs.
zomeizter replied to Spinnakerblue89's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
No problem running LEDs over incandescent bulbs unless such are CAN monitored by a control module, this would be the major "issue" with the swap. Also, the color spectrum will be different and some LEDs do not dim well with the use of a rheostat as in the dash illumination, so getting the correct ones would get you the correct and intended result. The best way to know if you really want to run LEDs is to actually run some, try some different ones out, but this could be a bit of a pain depending on bulb location and keep in mind that these light emitters are polarized. I have a 96 Dodge Ram that I used as my guinea pig by swapping all the instrument cluster bulbs to LEDs, I really liked how much brighter all the indicators became, especially during bright sunny days, had no clue it had a gear shift light for the manual tranny until after the retrofit LOL... -
New Comanche owner, Lift tips?
zomeizter replied to Backpacker's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ha! I lifted mine to fit 33-35ers and am still running 31 inch mudders on steelies since the north AL woods haven't stopped the lil beast with such. I believe it's them lockers though, get you some traction aids and give it a whirl OP... -
Tachometer? How does it do the things it does?
zomeizter replied to DzienManche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I bought a full cluster from a member here not knowing it was off a 2.5L truck. Once installed, the RPM were high and since there is no easy adjustability with that tach, I bought a converter to make it read correctly. -
Fuel pump may be the issue, you can verify with a pressure gauge to see if fuel pressure is getting built up quickly. Alternatively, activate the pump with the ignition switch two or three times, then crank the engine immediately after. If it starts in less time than before, the pump is weak and should be replaced.

When I swapped the 'moly shafts into my axle, the instructions mentioned a seal part number to use and install inside the pumpkin. I also bought a seal installer tool specific for the installation of such seal and it was pretty straight forward. I will give the seals-it a try once I bring my XJ back from New Mexico while I do some upgrades on it, I will report how that goes...

Solid axle conversion dana 30 help!
zomeizter replied to Warthog's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Once I bring the XJ home from the Bermuda Triangle, I will try these seals you recommend when I tear into the D30... -
This is nice, I have a C4 with that there engine. You may leave the smog air pump where it is, the A/C compressor actually replaces that idler assembly on the passenger side, if that's what that is...

Solid axle conversion dana 30 help!
zomeizter replied to Warthog's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Indeed I got the seal tool from amazon and from my memory it made the install a breeze, keep in mind that when I did this, I had the diff housing almost bare with the exception of the pinion. I installed moly shafts, lunch box locker, inner seals, outer greaseable tube seals, and ball joints in one shot... -
Solid axle conversion dana 30 help!
zomeizter replied to Warthog's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
ghetdj is absolutely right about the not a great fit of the seal in the tube, but there is a nifty tool out there that helps getting this sucker installed. I got it after hours of fighting the seal installation and a plethora of cuz words and tools flinging. Hopefully you are upgrading the shafts with some moly ones while you're in there?? -
That is my bad @gogmorgo, I should have mentioned that the wiring color matching is not always the same with different wiper motor manufacturers, it took me a bit to figure mine out since I had different wire colors than what others had noted. Glad to hear you got it figured out and enjoying an improved wiper system. For future reference, this is how I wired in the XJ motor into my rig: (note that mine is a 1986 MJ so maybe the colors are different from 87 and up) MJ connector/XJ wiper motor White/Green Red/Yellow Blue/Red Gray/White Black/Black

I'm not looking into protecting my rigs, I was just wondering what people do up there that's all, thanks for the insight...

Hey @Pete M, so if one does not drive during black ice season up north, is one able to keep the "cancer" off a vehicle? I'm sure there are also some sort of coating one can apply to the undercarriage too right? What do you do to prevent this cancer?
-
I hear ya man, that road salt is no joke for any vehicle, I know it first hand since my wife is from Cleveland OH and go there sorta often. One of my XJs came from there, bought it for dirt but is rotted badly, I thought I'd use it to do a 97+ upgrade on the MJ but I'm thinking about tackling the rust on it and restoring it, still unsure...
