I am actually not a big fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, nor any other bands with their type of vibe. But I cannot get enough of this compilation. This is my favorite form of rock. It's been my go-to lately when I'm working in the garage or around the house, especially when the wife isn't around and I can play it loud.

I been browsing Bring a Trailer for years and years now. In the last year or two I am seeing a lot more Jeeps than I used to, specifically J10s, XJs, and MJs. It pleases me to see so many nicely-kept Jeeps getting out there. It's nice to see them bringing in pretty good bids too - the love of old Jeep isn't dead. But even some of these MJs and XJs aren't bringing in top dollar, which I attribute to this site not really being intended for the Jeep-types. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1991-jeep-comanche-3/ Just mentioning it in case this site isn't on the radar of those looking for a good MJ.

If it was a few years ago the truck is likely gone. But I would keep checking until you confirm that's the case. Even if it's in a salvage yard, probably 50% of it is now gone. Bummer. But the 2.8L wasn't the best engine either, so you'd be better off buying another one and fixing it up to match your grandfather's anyway.

1986 MJ 2.8L V6 failed emissions.
Jargon replied to justinmartinez001's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I know this is basic, well-known emissions test trick, so sorry if you already know about this :) . But have you tried driving it at highway speeds for like 45 minutes prior to testing? I only bring it up because my friend has an XJ with 2.8L V6 and he fails every two years for the exact same thing: "failed the tail pipe emissions inspection". Then he takes it on the highway for a bit, comes back, and passes. I don't know if it's legit, or just coincidence. -

The Prestige. My favorite movie, mostly because of how much it messed with me. I still watch it every few years and it's still awesome, but nothing like the first time. I remember watching it with my family in our living room when I was in high school and when the final credits started rolling my whole family was in silence for a good 20 seconds... then my dad just says, "Wow."

Take pictures of the underside and the frame, look for rust there too. Peel back the carpet and inspect the floor panels for rust. One of my MJs came from a beach town and much of the underside was rusted through. Like in Oregon, I don't think they salt the roads in Idaho (I still have family in Coeur d'Alene) and the Jeep and Comanche market is pretty solid up there.

Sounds like you got a nice one. Where you live can have a big influence on what the market is like. Throw up some pics!

It's a nice truck; maybe something to compete with the Tacoma that everybody and their brother is driving these days. But it'd be tough spending $50k on a new Jeep knowing what half that would do if it were spent on an MJ or J20 restoration. LOL. But you could say the same about any new car, I guess.

My 2.5L had the same mirrors. The look great... except I had the muffler off and even while idle the mirrors would vibrate so bad that I couldn't see anything with them. Good lookin' MJ. I think you made a good purchase.

But a street comanche is not an ATV.
-
Wait, what happened here? Did someone buy it for $1500 and is now trying to flip it for $10k, without cleaning it or updating the pictures?
-
I would probably get the American flag one. But they are all good. I think they would look better without the headache rack, but either way they look great.

Very nice.

I've had my 1998 XJ 4.0L 4x4 5MT for 10 years and it's been very reliable. I bought it at 94,000 and now it's almost 200,000. Other than tune-up stuff I've never had any surprised repairs. Still runs strong. No reason to think it won't be as reliable as your MJ based on the engine alone. Whether or not the engine was taken care of is another question though... this XJ looks pretty rough around the edges and usually that's a clue about how well the rest of it was taken care of. The fact he doesn't know it's not a V6 is concern also. LOL

All the stuff DirtyComanche pointed out is important, especially on your first house. That's a good checklist; don't skip any of those. I think if you talk to 10 people you'll get 10 different opinions. Some people look at a house first as a place to live, and some look at it first as an investment. I tend to be the latter, but that's because I live in Portland where the average house price is about $400k and so the number are quite critical. I'm amazed anyone can live out here right now LOL. I'd start by talking to someone who is financially savvy that you trust; a friend or relative or mentor; I'm thinking someone who is older who has managed their money and investments well over the years and can give you advice on how to move forward. While I'd say that in general you can't go wrong buying a house, the numbers matter in the long run (and short run). The next step would be talking to a bank, but approach it assuming they generally just want money from you, so if you qualify for a loan they will give it to you, but they may not necessarily care that you're making the best financial decision for you. You can start shopping around for houses, but you really can't do much until you're pre-approved anyway. Get a realtor. Estimating if you are able to afford it is not just dividing the house price by 30 or 15 years. Obviously there is interest on the loan, and how much you put down and how long the loan is makes a huge difference on monthly affordability. There are other fees associated with the loan, depending on it's structure. Do research on taxes, insurance, and utilities costs in your area. Assume you will need to spend a few thousand a year on maintenance or repairs as well, since you're buying a fixer-upper. It's a very lengthy process and you'll learn the ins and outs as you go. Just don't sign anything in haste.

First MJ on Bring A Trailer
Jargon replied to Jargon's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Reserve not met at $6100. Seems high. That MJ wasn't particularly special imo. -
That's a great lookin MJ, btw; looks right at home with all those big toys!

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-jeep-comanche-4/ I think it's the first one anyway. I didn't see any other auction history of the Comanche.
