  1. For the street the suggestions given are great, if you start going offroad a lot I would install a hand brake.
  2. What Eagle just said is why everyone specifies that you must use stock wheels. The stock wheels will clear because of the offset, were an aftermarket wheel and/or spacers will push the wheels outward causing problems. You could use spacers to keep the tires from rubbing the arms but you would have to either lift the rig or start trimming for fender clearance.
  3. As neat as the diesel MJs are I don't think it would be a good swap. they are hard to find parts for and they are expensive if you do find them. Call a parts store and inquire about some basic parts like the starter for a diesel MJ They also use a modiefied version of the AX5 so they won't just bolt up to a gas truck transmission.
  4. I should have stopped by with mine.
  5. The last one I built had a spring over and 38s. With 5.13s and a 6.1:1 in the tcase it can crawl over about anything but with the guttless 1.3l all it can do is crawl.
  6. I don't know about 35mpg as they are only rated at 23/27 but they are neat rigs.
  7. I went to a 4x4 show today and put the MJ on the ramp. I leave Wednesday for Naches for the NAXJA NW fest. Hopefully after that I should be able to focus more on the engine swap.
  8. I imagine any MJ/XJ could work. IIRC some XJs may be different around the snow plow mount area but it shouldn't be an issue.
  9. Personally I wouldn't even bother looking for a good stock bumper for a truck that gets wheeled. Just build a simple bumper with some recovery points.
  10. I think I am gonna stick with the 4.3l. I also think I have decided to ditch the AX15 for an NV3500, that way I won't need to buy an engine to transmission adapter and I can also use the entire Chevy 231 rather then hybrid it with my Jeep 231 like I had planned. Now I just need to find a trans and then put a flywheel and clutch on my 4.3l, I'm gonna hit the junkyards and see what I can find. I'm also hoping to score a set of late model heads for it.
  11. First thing I did after buying the Falcon was buy a 63 Falcon V8 wagon parts car, so I have the bigger brakes and everything to convert it to 5 lug wheels. I've seen some pretty crazy 200s and 250s but I'm thinking I want something modern with fuel injection, another issue is mine is a 3 on the tree and I'm not sure I want to build a performance inline and stick it in front of my non performance 3 speed so I will probably swap transmissions as well if I do a repower at which point it won't matter much what bolts in.
  12. I do like that its a little different. I will have to see what happens,I think the 4.3l swap will be cooler and may have more potential but the 4.0l swap will be cheaper and easier.
  13. Its hard to decide which one to go with. I was thinking today that the 4.3 would be nice because it would be pretty easy to put in a V8 later on as most of the conversion would already be done.
  14. I really like the old Javelins, I had a chance to buy a 70 with a 390 and 4spd several years ago but I had just bought a mustang and couldn't swing it. I still wish I had got it.
  15. I wonder what they used for a transmission. That engine will bolt up to an AX4/AX5 but I wouldn't expect it to live very long.
  16. That's kinda what Ive been thinking, the car weighs almost nothing so it would perform well with a modern V6 and still get great gas mileage. Personally I like the less popular or oddball cars, I get tired of seeing the same cars done over and over. This is also why I bought the MJ.
  17. I haven't decided yet exactly what direction I'm going with it. When I bought it about 6 years ago I had big plans to stick a V8 in it and make a hot rod out of it, then I found that I liked driving it around and hitting all the cruise ins. The car gets awesome gas mileage so its nice to cruise around in. Any more I don't worry so much about going fast so I have been considering leaving it a 6 cyl car, the stock 170 isn't bad but I think a modern V6 would make a nice cruiser. I also have a 351 I could swap into it, just have to make up my mind. For now the plan is to strip it down and see how bad it is, I think what I find is gonna help direct the build. Already from the rotten rear wheel boxes Ive decided its getting mini tubbed. The car had a very bad restoration done at some point and has a lot of serious issues hidden under bondo. Currently I'm thinking the car is gonna end up a combination of hotrod black and school bus yellow, but that could change too as the build goes.
  18. 1 3/4" .120 is plenty strong, but since the OP is thinking about using a flimsy YJ cage I'm gonna guess its a cosmetic issue.
  19. You could always invest in a 2"die set. I have several different dies, its nice to not be stuck with one size of tube.
  20. here's how it looked before
  21. I recently tore apart my 63 Falcon Futura to fix some rust problems. So far I've had to reconstruct part of the roof and I'm getting ready to make replacement floor panels.
  22. The 4.0 would be easier and cheaper, I like the 4.3l because its not the typical 4.0l you find under the hood of just about every MJ/XJ Performance wise both engines are nearly the same. Not completely sure what I'm gonna do yet but I'm leaning towards the 4.0
  23. So after a conversation with a few other MJ guys I went and took some measurements and it looks like a 4.0l will clear my winch in its current position with some minor tweaking. Now I have a 4.0l and all the wiring sitting on a pallet and a 4.3l and all the wiring sitting on another pallet and a decision to make.
