Found this oldy today
schardein replied to dunnc1991's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Nice. I like the "Hurricane" on the air cleaner. Jeep has a long history with Hurricane 4 cylinder engines. Truck is from when AMC thought the 2 doors would outsell the 4 doors. -
Makes sense. Mine is a Sport, didn't even come with a factory installed radio.

1995 4.0 Fuel injection to carb
schardein replied to Jeepjeff859's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I disagree. There are few things as reliable as a properly set up carburetor. Fuel injection may provide better fuel economy across a wider variety of operating conditions, but I have always believed that you have a better chance of limping home with a carburetor than you do with fuel injection. The '95 Chrysler injection system is pretty good, but IMHO there's a certain amount of "cool" factor to running a carburetor. The trick is deciding what carburetor, and then sizing it. If I were doing it, I'd be looking for a progressive 2-barrel, with a small primary venturi and a larger secondary venturi. (Of course, I'm not sure such a thing exists, but I think so.) Or go all-out and get a triple Weber setup ... I see where you are going with this. I will say that I have never had a carb leave me broke down on the side of the road. Fuel injection has, for a CPS. However, both have left me on the side of the road for an electric fuel pump, and a carb has left me stranded for a mechanical fuel pump (none of which is the carb or FI fault, I suppose). I've ran Weber carbs, and in my experience, they required periodic tuning to keep running right (mixture and idle adjustments). I've ran Holleys, same thing to a lesser degree. Took several mods to make it perform off road (bowl vent crossover tube, float bowl baffle, float and idle adjustments) I've ran Quadrajets, which have given me the least problems in factory applications. Time consuming to tune for custom engines though. Since converting to FI in my CJ, it has never left me stranded. I carry a spare fuel pump and spare CPS but have never needed them. -
1995 4.0 Fuel injection to carb
schardein replied to Jeepjeff859's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have to say I agree. Anyone who replaces a computer controlled fuel injection system with a carb is taking a step back. I say this with years of experience of working on and tuning carbs. For a period correct build, say like my 1967 CJ5 with the factory Buick V6, an aftermarket aluminum four barrel intake and a 390 cfm Holley carb is cool and a big performance improvement. But it took some tuning and mods to the carb to make it perform ok off road. My eyes were opened back in 1998 when I swapped out the 258 I6 in my 1983 CJ7 for a 1991 4.0 with fuel injection. The difference was amazing. And the original 258 had the best running BBD carb I've ever driven (and I've driven quite a few CJs). I'm not a fan of the Renix system, but replacing it with a carb is a step back. The Renix problems, like most all problems with the XJ/MJ platform, are well documented (like here at CC!) and correct fixes are relatively inexpensive. -
I recently posted a question about the woodgrain interior trim, and another question occurred to me. I have a 1991 with the burgundy interior. My steering column is black. I installed a factory steering wheel with the factory black leather cover, to replace the steering wheel with the plain rubber rim. One day at the junkyard I saw a burgundy leather covered steering wheel. Thought about grabbing it, but thought mine would look funny with a black steering column (still think so). The truck in question had a burgundy painted steering column. So I'm wondering why my steering column is black? Was there any rhyme or reason for a steering column to be color matched?

Thanks for the replies. I have seen the different woodgrain "colors". I once owned an 89 XJ Wagoneer (Black/woodgrain sides, tan/wood interior). It's what started my love affair with the XJ/MJ platform. This was before digital pictures, I'll have to see if I can find some old photos.

I guess this may be more of a "cherokee" question... I swapped in a woodgrain dash panel to my burgundy interior Comanche. I've seen these woodgrain dash panels in Cherokees with the "Country" package, and XJ Wagoneers. These Jeeps also have woodgrain trim on the door panels. I've only seen this in tan and gray interiors. So my questions, did Comanches ever have the woodgrain interior option? And has anyone ever seen burgundy door panels with the woodgrain trim?

Exhaust bracket 52003040
schardein replied to schardein's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thank you! -
Gents, fixing exhaust on my XJ and need this bracket. I've did a search and some info came up. Hornbrod listed a link to arizonaparts, but I checked the webpage, did the search and came up empty. Maybe he's out of them, or they just don't show up on a search? I guess this could go in the wanted section, but I am looking for a source for a new one. I'm usually pretty savvy in finding parts, but no luck so far. Any help is appreciated. Here is a pic of mine on the left. On the right is a part I ordered from Rockauto, that for some reason I thought looked right. Obviously not, but I can use it to fab a repair on mine if I can't source a new one. Image Not Found

I have seen those symptoms from failing Crankshaft Positioning Sensors and Camshaft Positioning Sensors. Although more commonly the vehicle will completely die and not restart for a 15-30 minutes, with the restart time getting longer every time it happens. As corny as it sounds, disconnecting the crankshaft positioning sensor connecter (near the rear of the intake manifold) and then connecting it back again will often get an instant restart. I've seen similar symptoms from a failing electric fuel pump, but not on Jeeps. My Chevy did that, although only a couple times before failing completely a few minutes later. Crawling underneath and banging on the fuel tank got a restart and a couple more miles down the road. Again, sounds corny but worked.

I don't have any 91+ types. I have older ones if you are interested in wiring them in yourself?

What year clock are you looking for? http://gojeep.willyshotrod.com/HowtoDashClock.htm

3-2-1 Although I'm hoping #3 has the 4.0! #2 would need a lot of changes to suit my taste #1 I would completely pass on the deal. As others have mentioned, I'm not interested in someone else's project. And, I'm not interested in an MJ as a hardcore wheeler.

Cigar lighter delete panel

I tend to feel the same way, but don't imagine anybody will be searching one out. It will go in the big box of extra XJ/MJ parts in the garage... -

Both my MJ and XJ have the factory lighters. Thanks for the tip, however I am a self proclaimed "Pik-n-Pull" expert! Very cool item, added to my wishlist for future consideration. Like the idea of installing that in the center console so my iPod is out of sight and the cord isn't cluttering up the dash/cab. I have a 97-up XJ center console in my MJ, and since MJ has Foot pedal Park-brake the console opening is essentially "useless". I have thought about removing the "brush-pieces" and making some kind of panel/mount. Or a "hidden" compartment of sorts. Maybe install the plug there. Or, I was thinking maybe install the plug under the ashtray cover. This way it would be hidden when not in use. My Silverado had a place inside the center console that looked like it was for mounting a power port. I went ahead and drilled it out and mounted/wired one. Handy to leave the cell phone or iPod charging but out of sight and no wire hanging around. I can't remember if a late model XJ console lends itself to that, but it's a good idea. The factory consoles in MJs had a plastic cover instead of the whiskers. Obviously the late model XJ consoles didn't have that option, since no more MJ. -

It has the hole in the back, just like a regular lighter panel. It's just covered over with the "whatever you call it" textured plastic stuck on the front. No lighter "sign" though. I'd thought about cutting it out and putting one of those USB port setups in it. But I figure one could do that with a regular panel just as easy. Easier, since you wouldn't have to cut out the hole. -
Never seen one before. Got this from a 87 MJ.

I think I have some tan ones. What color are you looking for?

Your switch looks like it is mounted to the right of the steering column? Factory ones I've seen mount to the left, next to the fog lamp switch if it was optioned. How did you do that?

Not to stray to far off topic, but these^ also come with nice thick, large diameter washers. -
Feeling bad about how much $$ you have in your MJ?
schardein replied to RochesterMJ's topic in The Pub
For that price I could buy... 68 of my Comanches? Doesn't seem like a fair comparison. For that price... I could almost pay off my house. I enjoy being able to look for parts in the junkyards. Haven't seen a JK in a junkyard lately. -
I'm interested in a set of burgundy bucket seats. I've got brackets, and I've got a set of tan bucket seats. I'm going to be pricing having these re-upholstered, but thought I would see if some originals were available. If so, that saves me some time and I could probably sell these. Available for trade for a comparable set of burgundy. Must be the proper MJ/2 dr XJ bucket seats with the flip forward function. As for the console, I'd be interested in either the full length or short console in original burgundy. I've got both in gray if perhaps a trade could be worked out. Price would have to be right as this is a "nice to" not "have to". Thanks!
