Maybe you're not hearing it in neutral or with the clutch pushed in because the engine is not under a load during those times. Most transmission shops will put it on a lift and listen themselves for free. It's not a waste of their time because of the possibility you'll have them do the repair work.

The first post reminded me of this. The guy who sent me the pictures had bought it but had not picked it up yet. He said the price was low and hidden in there was a low mileage diesel F-450. I lost his number and haven't heard back from him but I'm curious how the drive home went. Notice the rain gutter exhaust.

Factory front winch mount
Kerry replied to krustyballer16's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Actually looking at my own picture this set may have brackets welded on. I may be wrong about the old style not having the bracket welded on, I'll check and see from my 87 which came with hooks. The other pic was one I saved from Ebay. -

Here's a picture of the older ones, I'm thinking 84-early 90's? These did not have the bumper brackets welded to them, even if the Jeep was ordered with them. I have a set of OEM 97+ brackets on one of my XJs. They did have the brackets welded on which I had to grind off because the 97+ bumper mounts differently than earlier. -
Factory front winch mount

Yes, It's complete with instructions and parts list. The tow hook bumper brackets and the winch itself were not part of the kit and had to be purchased separately. I'll get it out of my storage and verify it's all there and then get a shipping quote. I've been sitting on it for years so a month or so is not a problem. -

I have one of the factory kits that's not been used that I'm saving for a future project. You are welcome to look at it if you wanna pay for the shipping or I can take some pictures and measurements for you. -
Bought it! Thanks for posting it. I already have the accessories book and price list but not the totally cool poster.

Coolest Cherokee ever!
Kerry replied to coolwind57's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
The J-series was around from 1963 to 1991 and included Cherokees & Wagoneers in both 2 and 4 door (depending on years) along with 1/2 to 1 ton pickups. They were out long before the term SUV was invented and they were tough, stylish, and rode great. Among my favorites were the "wide track" Cherokees of the mid to late 70's with the blacked out trim, graphics, and the awesome 401 AMC engine. The 401 was detuned for emissions but still had a forged crank and rods. It didn't take a lot of work to wake it up. Prices on the J-Series have gone up the last few years and most likely will continue to do that making them a good investment to go along with already being very cool. -
Ebay MJ sold for $11.5K

In those days the rear bumper was an option in some states. It may have never had a factory bumper. -

An 87 with original 63K miles
Kerry replied to coolwind57's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
The 4x4 badges are in the original place. They moved to the cab a year later on the 1988 models. I dig the two-tone! -
Stumble Sputter Stall Bog Surge and Rev
Kerry replied to Gubachoo's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I cannot say this for sure but my guess is it's easier and cheaper to use one wiring harness on both autos and manuals than to have two different harnesses. AMC was very good at using parts that would work on a variety of different applications. -
I used front air dam retainers listed for 03-07 Grand Cherokees. The Mopar part # is 5159132AA and they go for about one dollar each. They are a little larger than the original but they do fit, just a little tight. Wrong color too but I can live with that.

I used a stick on one from a Wagoneer (XJ). They are smaller and cleaner looking in my opinion and you see NOS ones on Ebay fairly often. My header panel is aftermarket without the holes.

Factory tow hooks and lower air dam
Kerry replied to schardein's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
What did you end up doing with the air dam? It's hard to tell from the picture but if needed I have a couple of them with the factory cut outs. You are welcome to one if you pay the postage. -
I sent you a PM. Let me know what you got and what you want and I'll try to make it happen. If this goes through then I will still be looking for one more set, give or take a piece, so if anyone has anything let me know. Thanks

I think those stripes are Jeep authorized dealer options. I have a Jeep Comanche Accessories Guide from 87 that show two different body side stripe packages available in several color combinations. There's no picture but it does have a picture of a 4x4 stripe package that looks similar to the strpes on the Craigslist truck.. There's four pages total of "Genuine Jeep Comanche Outfitters" accessories listed including a hands free Cellular Phone for $1,463.90! It would be interesting to see a picture of one of those. The MJ in that ad looks as if it might be a good deal,at least worth checking out. I'm guessing rats or mice may have gotten into the wiring causing his problems.

I bought it, had it on my watch list for awhile but had not pulled the trigger. It was kinda pricey but that comes with NOS. So now I "only" need two exhaust brackets (#1 on list) plus a spare if possible along with the other items.

Actually the plate lights have a separate harness that plugs in to the tail light harness, part # 56001054. The covers are necessary around here at least because the Police WILL write you a ticket if there's a white light showing on the rear of your vehicle. I had some black Gorilla tape wrapped around my broken covers until Yellaheep sold me a nice set,you might see if he has any more left. I also wonder if they might be GM style and if so Dorman may have them. I've looked for them at the auto supply with no luck but what they stock is a very small sample of Dorman's large product line. I did see they have some GM tailgate hardware that looks very similar to what's on the MJ.

No guaranty required nor expected. #1 is by far the hardest to find and isn't so noticeable if I have to fabricate one which won't be pretty.PM Sent! I failed to mention it but I need more than one of all these items. I have borrowed from my two project Jeeps to use on my two drivers (still only have one #1) and odds are pretty good that my next Jeep will be a Renix and that it will be missing some or all of them. I will update the post as needed when I have them all plus one spare of each. I encourage everyone to pack a picnic lunch and take the family out to your local junkyard for a fun filled day of part searching.

I'm looking for the following parts from a 4.0 XJ/MJ. Most are Renix specific... 1 - The bracket that bolts to the bottom of the tranny bellhousing that supports the exhaust downpipe. This is not the one with the rubber mount that's on the crossmember, This one is on the front and uses what's basically a muffler clamp. These also came on non-Renix Jeeps and are often missing. 2 - The bracket for the heater hoses that bolts to the rear pass side of of the block. 3 - The brackets for the hoses that mounts to the AC compressor. I believe there are two. 4 - The clips that bolt to the rear of the engine and to the head that route the CPS sensor wire away from the exhaust. I believe there are two of these also. I also need the plastic twist things that hold the relay cover down. I have the cover(s) but no attaching screws(?) to hold them down. These things somehow seem to vanish over time. Let me know if you have any or all. If you need pictures or part numbers I can provide them. Thanks, Kerry 817 716-8833

4.0 Backfiring, stuttering, and misfiring
Kerry replied to Spydie's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
What's great about the factory manuals is that while a Chilton/Haynes/etc. will tell you how to replace a part the factory manuals explain how the systems are designed to work so you know why you're replacing that part. They will not always troubleshoot for you but give you the information needed to correctly troubleshoot it yourself. The factory manuals for the Renix Jeeps are more difficult than the Chrysler ones to manipulate. Here's a few things that are good to know when shopping for them.... 1 - There was not a manual made for the 87 or 88 Comanche or Cherokee. The manuals for those two years were an 86 manual with 87 and/or 88 updates added on to the back of the books. It's difficult sometimes to tell them apart (on Ebay at least) as the updated ones are often listed as an 86. The updated ones also include factory service bulletins (TSB) that provide even more good information. 2 - The Cherokee and Comanche manuals are different sets (unlike Chrysler ones) and both are two volumes, Vol 1 is mechanical, Vol 2 is body. 3 - In addition to the two volume sets there are separate manuals for specific engines, transmissions, and transfer cases. These are not usually necessary unless you're rebuilding those components but there is one manual that is important and that is the Fuel Injection Manual. It explains how the Renix system works and how to diagnose and replace individual sensors. Chrysler later made their own version of the Renix system manual that provides even more pictures and info. If there's any errors or more to add I welcome any input. -
92 MJ Unspoiled Base Model w. 5-Speed
Kerry replied to HOrnbrod's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
It's interesting how different people's perception of condition can be. I know often things are described as better than actual intentionally to help it sale but in this case it appears the seller truly believes it to be in only fair condition. Sometimes location can play a role, a body in fair condition to us in the South is very good to others in the rust areas up North and fair interior and/or plastic parts to them are very good compared to our sun fried stuff. Lots of good pictures are a great help to both buyers and honest sellers.
