Biggest let down in my Comanche career.......details inside
terrawombat replied to xjrev10's topic in The Pub
I've been bored at work the last couple of weeks. Not because I've got nothing to do, but the work is, well, boring. I have been doing a couple Craigslist searches and this just must be the time of year for '92's because three of them have popped up and they all look pretty good, but one especially: http://allentown.craigslist.org/cto/3399748931.html I really, really want someone on here to buy this. I've spoken to the owner (Joe) and he's a real cool guy. Was even going to ignore other potential buyers to let me have first stab because he knew I was a Comanche nut and he wanted it to go to a good home. He just bought another Jeep SUV for his wife and they no longer drive this one. I was looking to trade my Cherokee since I'm cash-poor right now, but he is trying to get rid of vehicles, not obtain more. Here are two others I found that look to be in pretty good shape: http://atlanta.craigslist.org/eat/cto/3436503915.html http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/3429538344.html I'm going to look at a '87 Metric Ton and an '89 Eliminator this weekend and if those two turn out to be duds, I'm going to be all over the $1200 '92. -
Here is the '98 engine that went into my '01. You can probably spot the additional piece that was added to get the two-piece cast exhaust system to mate up properly...

My only current interest in Facebook is the money I have invested in their stock. Been doing well the last couple of days!

I grew up on a farm and varmint control is essential to keep the livestock food clean and electrical wires in the barn intact. We usually just had an abundance of cats that relied on the mice to stay alive, but then the cats started to become pests. Then we got a dog to control the cat population. Down from 30 or so cats to about 6. Survival of the fittest - those last six cats are damn good hunters.

Rob - what's the ETA for this thing sitting in your driveway?
-
I have been using photobucket for a while now, but I do not like the last two or three "major" changes they have made to the site. Now that I have my own server running in my house, I'm probably just going to use that.

I think Rob could use another...

And then immediately begins its decline into a chalky, matte finish.

Using Chrome and spell check works fine over here. One thing that I don't like is that it won't let you capitalize acronyms...always goes lowercase after the first character.

4X4 Comanche On Ebay. Located In Jersey
terrawombat replied to Wrz's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
Comanche's that are below the rust belt. I've been looking in North Carolina for one because even their average, run of the mill Comanche's are better than the best Comanche's in the rust belt: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/3416428059.html -
http://poconos.craigslist.org/cto/3411144214.html There is only one guy I know on the East Coast with that many MJs....

Welcome! The creaking noise is most likely the rubber bushings in your rear leaf springs. Kind of a pain to change those out since you'll need to support the whole rear of the truck, essentially drop the rear axle out and replace each bushing (two per leaf spring, so four total) with a press. I haven't personally done it, but I've watched it being done and there was plenty of cursing involved! I think it's about $60 in parts for the bushings. -
I can't really blame him for being so uninterested in the thing - it's a niche vehicle that mainly appeals to off-road enthusiasts, which he makes clear @ 0:45 he is NOT one of those people. He also made it very clear he wasn't a Jeep guy when he was looking for the hood release cable in the cab @ 4:20. His collection is mainly supercars/sportscars/racecars so, to him, I'm sure this is just a truck with oversized tires and an undersized (relatively speaking) motor.

4X4 Comanche On Ebay. Located In Jersey

Rust-wise, it's in fairly good shape for a Jersey vehicle. A lot of that rust looks like it can be wire-wheeled down to bare metal, body filled and sanded smooth again. It seems exceptionally scratch & dent-free for a North Jersey vehicle... -
eh, that'll pop back into place.

Question To The Rust Belters
terrawombat replied to BPB's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I haven't been very successful with the occasional Rustoleum treatment on my '92MJ. I've got a spot on the rocker right behind the door where it continues to rust. I sand it have to sand it down and respray it about once a year. The only permanent solution that I have found has been POR-15. -
So from what I gather in your post here as well as the one in your new, edited build thread, you were able to score a complete set of body panels and springs to make a replica SCCA MJ?

I guess I'm in the minority when I say that looks pretty bad...and it's only going to get worse. The undercoating is gone and the metal is completely exposed. The only thing you have going for you is that you've got 4 extra holes besides the factory hole to let water/mud escape and not get trapped inside the frame rail. I think your best option is exactly what you described - use large enough angle iron that will overlap onto good metal. Before you weld the angle on, you need to get rid of all of the junk, rotted metal and you need to find good stuff to weld to - that will determine the leg size on the angle iron. When you're done, drill a few large holes in the angle to allow anything that finds its way inside a chance to get out. Also, when you start cutting away at the bad metal, chances are you're going to open up the frame rail a significant amount that the inside will be exposed - hit it with some rust preventative paint while you have the chance!

That's a great article....written by the marketing group at Amsoil to try and sell you on their fancy and extremely expensive product. We can agree to disagree. There are far too many personal accounts and millions of miles that show synthetic 10W30 and the AX-4/5/15 go together like mustaches and pedophiles.
