    Leather work

Not to hi-jack your thread ...but ....For you northern guys , old buddy and fellow vaquaro from my ridin' for a livin' days in the Cariboo , Dirk Broeder @ www.dirksleathershop.com can do a fine job on anything , here's some shots of the saddle he built for me this year ......
  2. :D Thanks for that new link , while I was going thru it I had a flash-back to the dis-assembly and I think I might have popped the key-lock barrel out with the key in the "lock" position rather than "on-run" position . In any case I'll be tearing it apart again this week-end so your link will be good reference . Gord
  3. We are talking a saginaw column here right? There's no prying any column cover off of it if you want it to go back on. You have to remove the wheel, clock spring, turn signal ring, ignition key, and hazard pull knob to get the top plastic off. The only part that will come off is the one he popped off by accident and that is not the way it was intended. Sounds to me that either the key switch may not have the retaining screw in it, which is allowing the whole thing to turn or something is mis-aligned. Did you have this thing completely apart? Did you make sure this little piece got put back in right? It's important as it works in conjuction with the key switch. Here's a good link that shows how to take apart and put the columns back together. http://brackmann.org/berkeley/Jeep/wren ... gwheel.htm  That is indeed a good link ....if you have a "tilt column " mine is not , they're simular but the housings for one are quite different . The key buzzer thing , stayed put (Ithink) and yes it was pretty much completely apart , except the column shrouds (different design than tilt -2 pc. versus 3 pc. shown on link )which stubbornly refused to part (yes I removed the 4 screws ) :hmm:
  4. Know it well , killed many a brain cell at the "Frog & Nightgown " pub on Falcon
  5. The VIN would suggest otherwise... It's a 1J7FT number meaning 1=USA, J= BUilt by Jeep 7=Truck F=4001-5000 T2=Cherokee or Comanche 2 W.D. Base model. Also, mine is a standard tranny. Hmmmm.... Mine had the factory "build" sheet in the door and it didn't come close to what the sticker code translated to .....
  6. Thanks , I'll give it another try this weekend . I think I may have dislodged the ignition actuater rod or mis-clocked the key lock tumbler on my last go 'round with this "repair" . By the way , where are you in B.C. ?
  7. I guess I could have worded it better . What I meant was the key normally would spring back to" run " , but now I have to turn it back manually to dis-engage the starter motor . Any tips on removing the the plastic columb covers , busted out the back side of the wiper pod (not on purpose ) while trying to separate the two pieces .
  8. Well I've really screwed something up :wall: (previous post "smoke signals from steering column " . I determined the wiper switch was the problem , so I've replaced that and the wipers are working fine BUT....now the ignition lock is binding up badly , key doesn't return after "start" , lock release lever is very stiff ," accessory " position doesn't function .Can anybody show me how to solve this ? :dunno: .....Thanks , Gord
  9. If you haven't turned over any cash.....Walk away , the extra $300 is just the begining . Besides , where was "Unc' " when the kid needed him ? All sounds a little fishy .
  10. :wall: This project is really going sideways ....nobody ( haynes etc ) mentioned how to access the wiper switch hinge pin/bolt .....So I remove the lock barrel and the 4screws inside the plastic shroud , managed to break the upper one trying to separate the two . :headpop: At least I was able to finally get to the hinge pin and swap in the new wiper switch . Re-assembly didn't go well ,after which the following " New" problem arose ....on start up ,key doesnt spring back to dis engage starter (did it manually ) also the key release lever is stiff/binding :help: Sure could use your input on this :dunno: Thanks , Gord
  11. Yep! She's a convertible but very much a California convertible. She leaks when it's wet. It was a kit that could be purchased. The seat belts are on bars behind the seat. The top was cut with a fine toothed jig. The kit was great with instructions. It came with caps on all of the holes cut. I'll be damned if I can remember the name of it tho. The truck use to be white. I have neons underneath and the front end is slammed to the ground. The back end looks low but its just the tires on it. I know I know, kinda defeats the purpose of a Jeep buuuut its 2WD so, why not. The muffler has been pulled and it sounds great with just a cat on. The Renix computer takes care of the change in back pressure. Digital cameras were not available when this was done but I do have some great pics of her in action. Oh, note to all. If you are going to put small tires on the back, change the gear ratio. I ended up blowing the rings on the motor by high rev, low speed during normal highway driving. I used to see a " white Comanche convertible " a few years back driving around in the Langley area ....is/was that you ?
  12. Bought a new wiper switch , plugged it in at the lower column connection block ....Voila !...all works correctly . :D So next week-end I get to tear into the steering column :( to install the new stuff (got a new signal switch too ) Wish me luck :shake:
  13. :agree:
  14. good deal, we had to do that for a guy with a 90 YJ a couple weeks back cause his was busted out/not sealing. make sure to get a gasket (i would think it comes with one) but don't try to just RTV it down, seen that trick tried... it doesn't work. 8) :hmm: I beg to differ .RTV was the oem gasket , note that shoulder bolts are used to accommodate this method (you'll need to get new bolts for the pre-made gasket )If you do the RTV (Permatex Copper is the best) correctly it works great , clean surfaces and patience are key . Lay down a 3/8" bead on the new valve cover , let it fully cure (over-nite ) . Apply a thin wet coat of RTV to cylinder head & previous RTV bead on vc , install vc ,bolts finger tight ,wait 10 min. ,torque bolts to spec. ,wait 15-30 min. ,start motor and check for leaks (unlikely )
  15. :agree: and I expect I'll find some broken piece thats causing a short in there .The good thing is knowing what it supposed to look like in there first
  16. :rotfl2: Thats a beauty ! .....snorkle for the truck , but forgot about the driver....its all in the details

  18. :rotfl2: The Patch didn't work for me , but I'll give a try on the column
  19. I should have clarified , it's a base wiper w/mist not intermittant function (module ) sorry for the mis-info
  20. I haven't seen this malady before ? :hmm: ....Driving along , and notice smoke wafting up from the turn /wiper stalk . In a panic, I wiggle the thing around a bit and the smoke stops....a couple days later it was raining , tried to turn on the wipers and they only worked on High , no intermittant or low speed ,as well the wiper "park" function didn't work (had to manually time shutting off at the normal park position ) :dunno: Obviously I'm going to have dig into the steering column which I'm a little intimadated by :( Any experience-tips-advise you guys have would be greatly appreciated :help:
  21. I have to admit , I've thought about it ......you go first.. :hmm:
  22. " Comanchero " :clapping:
